Chapter 113 – Into the Fire
Chapter 113 – Into the Fire
\---
The fire hit like a world collapsing.
Violet waves surged outward from the core, devouring stone, melting chains, and hammering Louve’s body with heat so absolute it stripped breath from her lungs. The cavern wasn’t just shaking—it was dissolving. The walls ran like wax, molten rivers hissing as they cascaded downward.
For a heartbeat she was weightless, lost inside the storm. The fire scoured her skin, seared through her wings, boiled blood in her veins. She screamed once—then no sound escaped. Her throat had already turned raw ash.
And yet, the ember did not break.
\---
It convulsed violently in her chest, expanding, answering the violet flood with gold. She clutched her ribs as if she could hold it inside by force, but it burned through her hands, her skin, her bones, forcing her to become the vessel it demanded.
She staggered, half-blind, her claws dragging furrows through the cracking stone.
This is it, she thought, almost delirious. This is how the abyss ends me.
But then the ember flared so hot it wasn’t just fire anymore. It was light.
\---
Her body became conduit.
The violet fire poured into her—through her torn wings, through her open mouth, through every scar the abyss had branded on her. It should have destroyed her, but the ember caught it, bent it, refused to let it spread unchecked. Gold wove with violet, sparks clashing violently inside her veins.
Louve dropped to her knees, trembling as the power ripped at her. Tears streamed down her face, boiling before they could fall. Her claws struck the ground again and again as if anchoring herself against drowning.
“I’m… not… yours!” she roared, though her voice broke midway, shredded by fire.
The core’s laughter shook the cavern.
Not ours? You already burn with our light. Every scream you make feeds us. Every breath you take is borrowed from our flame. You cannot fight what you are.
\---
She pressed her forehead to the scorched stone, blood dripping from her nose. Her vision doubled, then tripled. The cavern around her was splitting wider, walls collapsing into molten rivers. Chains snapped one after the other, each breaking with thunder that split her skull.
The core surged brighter, violet expanding until it drowned everything.
Louve’s ember flickered dangerously, crushed beneath the flood. For one sickening second, she thought it would give way—burst apart, leaving her nothing but empty husk.
“No,” she whispered hoarsely. “You don’t get to hollow me. You don’t get to take what we built.”
Her thoughts clawed desperately toward Kade—his hands holding hers in the dark, his voice steadying her when shadows closed in, his eyes refusing to look away when she revealed the monster in herself.
She gritted her teeth, forcing her fire to cling to those memories.
Not just heat. Not just power. Something more.
The ember surged again.
\---
The flood changed.
The violet blaze no longer poured through her freely—it struck resistance. Her fire lashed back, spiraling outward like molten wings, cutting through the storm. The cavern shook with the clash of colors, violet and gold colliding so violently that the air itself warped.
Louve screamed, but it wasn’t despair anymore. It was defiance.
Her flames wrapped around her body, not as armor but as proof she hadn’t yielded. She staggered upright, every breath dragging knives through her lungs, but her eyes were fixed on the massive chained form looming before her.
“You think you’re the abyss?” she rasped. “You’re nothing without chains to rattle. Nothing without us to fear you. I’ll show you what fear really is.”
\---
The abyss answered with fury.
Tendrils of violet fire shot toward her in rapid succession, slamming into her body, piercing her arms, her legs, her sides. She convulsed with every strike, but the ember burned hotter, bending each wound into more flame.
For the first time, the core faltered.
Its countless eyes narrowed, light stuttering as if her resistance broke rhythm.
“You feel that?” Louve spat, blood bubbling on her lips. “That’s mine. Not yours. Mine.”
Her wings exploded outward, pure fire this time—half-gold, half-violet, unstable, but hers. She leapt into the storm, claws tearing through one of the smaller chains nearest the core.
The chain cracked.
The shockwave nearly obliterated her, blasting her back across the cavern, but the sight seared itself into her: her fire could hurt it.
Her body screamed at her to stop, every nerve burned to threads, but she grinned through blood and ash.
“Good,” she whispered hoarsely. “Then I’ll keep breaking you.”
\---
The abyss shrieked.
You will burn to nothing!
The cavern collapsed further, walls disintegrating, rivers of molten rock surging upward instead of down. The air became choking ash, the heat unbearable.
But Louve wasn’t backing down. She staggered, then ran—half-stumbling, half-flying—straight toward the core. Her fire flared again, wings whipping the molten air into a cyclone around her.
Each step felt like knives splitting her bones apart. Each breath shredded her chest. But she forced herself forward, one heartbeat at a time, even as the abyss lashed her with fire, even as it roared with fury.
She wouldn’t give it the satisfaction of watching her crawl.
If it wanted her broken, it would have to fight for it.
\---
And then—
Something else answered.
Not from the core. Not from her.
A whisper cut through the firestorm, a voice deep and distant, almost drowned in the roar.
Louve…
Her head snapped up, eyes burning, breath caught.
She knew that voice.
Kade.
Her knees buckled. Relief, sudden and fierce, nearly undid her. She had been so sure she’d lost him—yet the ember inside her flared at his call, confirming what her ears had told her.
He was still alive.
And he was near.
The abyss roared, chains thrashing violently as if in denial.
No. He cannot enter. He will be ash before he touches our fire.
But Louve only laughed through the blood in her throat, staggering upright once more.
“Then you’d better pray,” she rasped, fire curling brighter around her trembling body, “because if he reaches me, you won’t stand a chance.”
\---
The cavern shook with fury, violet light surging, chains rattling like thunder. The abyss roared louder than before, preparing to drown her once and for all.
And Louve, broken and bleeding, raised her claws, wings blazing, ember burning like a star.
Not defeated.
Not surrendered.
Waiting for him.
