Chapter 198 The New Student Assembly
POV: Luna
The next morning, the Headmaster called a mandatory assembly.
"All students to the main hall. Immediately. No exceptions."
We filed in. Confused. Curious. Worried.
Assemblies weren't normal. Especially mandatory ones. They usually meant trouble.
"What do you think this is about?" Nova whispered.
"No idea. But it's unusual."
The Headmaster took the stage. Waited for silence.
"Thank you all for coming. I've called this assembly to formally introduce our newest transfer student. Normally, this wouldn't require school-wide announcement. But given his unique circumstances and impressive credentials, I felt proper introduction was warranted."
Murmurs rippled through the crowd. Interest. Speculation.
"Please welcome Caleb Webber. Transfer from the Eastern Territories. Fourth-year student. Wolf-mage specialist."
Caleb walked onto the stage. Calm. Confident. Commanding.
The crowd reacted immediately.
"Eastern Territories? They produce the most powerful wolf-mages in existence."
"He must be incredible to transfer here as a fourth-year."
"Look at him. He radiates authority."
The Headmaster continued. "Mr. Webber comes to us with exceptional credentials. Trained by multiple masters. Proficient in numerous magical disciplines. Advanced combat skills. Impressive academic record."
"What are his specific credentials?" someone called out.
"That information is partially classified. Personal circumstances require discretion. But I assure you, he's been thoroughly vetted. He belongs at Silverwood."
Classified? Personal circumstances? That was unusual. Suspicious.
Students whispered. Speculated. Gossiped.
"Mr. Webber, would you like to say anything?" the Headmaster asked.
Caleb stepped forward. Addressed the crowd with unexpected authority.
"Thank you, Headmaster. I appreciate the formal introduction. I'm here for specific reasons. Personal growth. Specialized training. And something else I'm not at liberty to discuss publicly."
His voice carried. Command. Certainty. Weight.
He spoke like someone used to being heard. Obeyed. Respected.
"I'm not here to disrupt. To compete. To threaten anyone's position or status. I'm here to learn. To contribute. To be part of this community."
"Will you be joining any cliques?" someone asked.
Various groups leaned forward. Interested. Recruiting.
The combat track wanted his fighting skills. The magical society wanted his knowledge. The leadership council wanted his authority.
"No," Caleb said simply. "I appreciate the offers I've already received. But I prefer independence. I'll contribute where needed. But I won't be joining established groups."
"Why not?" the combat track leader asked. "We could use someone with your skills."
"Because my time here is limited. Specific. I have goals that don't align with long-term group commitments."
"How long are you planning to stay?"
"Until I accomplish what I came for."
Cryptic. Mysterious. Intriguing.
The crowd buzzed. Excited. Curious. Wary.
I felt eyes on me. Turned slightly.
Caleb was looking at me. Directly. Deliberately.
Our eyes met. Held. Something passed between us.
Recognition. Purpose. Destiny.
Then he looked away. Continued addressing the crowd.
But I felt it. Felt his attention. His intention. His focus.
He was here for something. Someone. And somehow, I was involved.
Through the mate bond, Liam felt my reaction. "He keeps looking at you."
"I noticed."
"Do you know him? Did you meet him before?"
"No. Never. But he acts like he knows me."
"That's concerning."
"That's confusing."
The assembly ended. Students dispersed. Multiple groups approaching Caleb. Trying to recruit. Befriend. Investigate.
He politely declined all approaches. Extracting himself. Heading toward me.
"He's coming over," Nova observed. "Should we run?"
"Don't be dramatic."
"I'm not. He looks intense. Focused. Like a wolf on a hunt."
She was right. Caleb moved with purpose. Determination. Single-minded focus.
On me.
"Luna Eclipse," he said, reaching us. "We need to talk. Privately."
My pack immediately went defensive. Protective. Wary.
"Why?" Liam asked. Mate bond radiating possessiveness.
"Because what I have to say concerns her. Specifically. Personally. And isn't for public consumption."
"Then say it with us present," Aria said. "Luna doesn't go anywhere alone with mysterious strangers."
"I'm not a stranger. Not really. Luna knows me. She just doesn't remember yet."
That stopped everyone.
"What are you talking about?" I asked.
"Exactly what I said. We've met. Connected. Bonded. You just don't remember. But you will. Soon."
"That's cryptic and concerning," Sienna said.
"That's honest and necessary," Caleb corrected. "Luna, please. Five minutes. Private conversation. That's all I ask."
Through my Eclipse senses, I felt his sincerity. His urgency. His lack of threat.
He wasn't dangerous. Not to me. Not now.
"Fine. Five minutes. But my pack stays within sight. And if anything feels wrong, they intervene."
"Agreed."
We walked to a quiet corner. Still visible to my friends. Still safe. But private.
"What do you want?" I asked.
"To warn you. About what's coming. About dangers you don't see yet. About threats that preceded my arrival."
"What threats?"
"The wolf-shaped signature you sensed. The otherworld energy. It's connected to me. To my arrival. To something larger."
"How do you know about that?"
"Because I was there. Not physically. But energetically. My arrival triggered resonance. Otherworld recognition. Your Eclipse senses detected it."
"That doesn't explain how you know me. How we've supposedly met."
"Not in this life. Not in this form. But our energies have touched. Connected. Bonded. Before."
"You're talking about past lives. Reincarnation. That's not proven. Not reliable."
"No. I'm talking about soul recognition. Energy memory. Things that transcend individual lifetimes."
He stepped closer. Too close. Invading personal space.
But not threatening. Familiar.
"Your Eclipse mark recognizes me," he said quietly. "Doesn't it? You feel the pull. The familiarity. The certainty that you know me even though you don't."
He was right. Completely right.
"How do you know that?"
"Because I feel it too. Through my own magic. My own energy. We're connected. Have been for longer than either of us understands."
"This is insane."
"This is truth. And soon, you'll understand. Remember. Accept."
"Why are you really here? What do you want from me?"
"To protect you. To help you. To stand beside you when the next threat arrives. Because it's coming. Soon. And you'll need allies you can trust absolutely."
"I have allies. My pack. My mate. My friends."
"You'll need more. Trust me."
He turned to leave. Stopped. Looked back.
"One more thing. Don't trust everyone at Silverwood. The conspiracy goes deeper than you know. There are traitors you haven't identified. Threats you haven't anticipated. Stay vigilant."
Then he left. Walking away. Leaving me with more questions than answers.
I rejoined my pack.
"What did he say?" Nova demanded.
"That he's here to protect me. That we're connected somehow. That threats are coming."
"Do you believe him?" Liam asked.
"I don't know. But my mark does. It recognized him. Responded to him. That's never happened with anyone except—"
I stopped. Realized.
The only times my mark had reacted like this were with mates. With Miguel. With Liam. With Aiden.
But Caleb wasn't a mate. Couldn't be. I'd already have felt that bond.
Unless.
Unless something was blocking it. Hiding it. Waiting to reveal itself.
No. That was impossible.
Wasn't it?
