Chapter 197 A Mysterious Arrival
POV: Luna
The next morning, I reported the wolf-shaped signature to the Headmaster.
"Interesting," he said, examining my description. "Otherworld energy but not hostile. Wolf-shaped. Pulsing rhythmically. That's unusual."
"Should we be worried?"
"Always. But not panicked. Keep monitoring. Report any changes."
I left his office and headed to orientation. Fourth-year students were supposed to mentor first-years. Show them around. Answer questions.
It was tedious but necessary.
I was assigned to the main hall. Greeting new students. Handing out schedules. Being welcoming.
"Hi, I'm Luna Eclipse. Welcome to Silverwood."
"Thanks! I'm so nervous. Is it always this overwhelming?"
"Yes. But you get used to it. Eventually."
I'd said that line maybe fifty times when he walked in.
Tall. Dark hair. Green eyes that seemed to see everything. Calm. Centered. Intelligent.
And something about him felt familiar. Wrong. Right. Confusing.
"Welcome to Silverwood," I said automatically. "Name?"
"Caleb Webber. Transfer student. Fourth year."
"Fourth year? Transfers are rare for upperclassmen."
"I'm aware. Special circumstances. The Headmaster approved."
His voice. Something about it tugged at my memory. But I'd never met him. I was certain.
"What are your special circumstances?" I asked.
"Personal. Family-related. Nothing dramatic."
Through my Eclipse senses, I felt his energy. Powerful. Controlled. Complex.
Wolf and magic blended seamlessly. Like Selene's hybrid form but different. More integrated. More natural.
"You're a wolf-mage," I observed.
"I am. Rare combination. But not unheard of."
"No. Just unusual. Most wolves can't handle magical training alongside wolf instincts."
"I'm not most wolves."
It wasn't arrogance. Just fact. Stated calmly. Confidently.
"Clearly. Do you need help finding your dorm? Your classes?"
"I can manage. But thank you for the offer."
He took his schedule and map. Started to leave.
Then stopped. Turned back.
"Luna Eclipse. You're the one who sealed the otherworld connection last year. Closed the artifact's energy permanently."
"How did you—"
"Word travels. Even to the Eastern Territories. What you did was impressive. Unprecedented."
"It was necessary."
"It was brave."
Through my Eclipse senses, I felt his sincerity. His respect. His something else I couldn't identify.
"Thank you," I said.
He nodded and left.
I watched him go. Confused. Intrigued. Unsettled.
"Who was that?" Nova appeared beside me. "And why were you staring?"
"New transfer. Fourth year. Caleb Webber."
"He's cute. In a mysterious, intense way."
"He's strange. Something about him feels familiar. But I've never met him."
"Maybe you knew him in a past life."
"Don't be ridiculous."
But the thought lingered. Something about Caleb Webber felt known. Important. Significant.
Later, during lunch, my pack discussed the new arrivals.
"There are twelve first-years," Aria said. "Plus three transfers. Including that Caleb guy."
"What do we know about him?" I asked.
"Eastern Territories. Wolf-mage hybrid. Impressive credentials but vague details. The Headmaster approved his transfer personally."
"Why would the Headmaster personally approve a transfer?" Sienna wondered.
"Special circumstances. That's what Caleb said."
"Special how?"
"He didn't elaborate."
"Mysterious," Lyric said. "I like it. Let me dig into his background. See what I can find."
"Don't hack school records."
"I would never." She grinned. "I'll just access publicly available information. Creatively."
That afternoon, new students were required to demonstrate their abilities. Faculty assessment. Placement in appropriate classes.
I went to watch. Curious about Caleb's "impressive credentials."
First-years went first. Standard demonstrations. Basic shifting. Simple magic. Expected.
Then Caleb's turn.
He stood in the center of the training room. Calm. Centered. Ready.
"Show us your wolf form," Professor Thorne instructed.
Caleb shifted. Smoothly. Beautifully. His wolf was large. Dark. Powerful.
But more than that. His wolf radiated control. Intelligence. Awareness.
Most wolves had instinct. Caleb's wolf had consciousness. Deliberate. Thinking.
"Impressive," Professor Thorne said. "Now your magic. Show us your primary discipline."
Caleb shifted back. Raised his hands.
Magic flowed. Not one discipline. Multiple. Simultaneously.
Elemental control. Energy manipulation. Protective barriers. Offensive strikes.
All woven together. Perfectly balanced. Masterfully executed.
The faculty watched. Stunned. Impressed. Concerned.
"How long have you been training?" Professor Thorne asked.
"All my life. Since I could walk."
"Your instructors?"
"Various masters. Eastern Territory specialists. I studied broadly."
"Clearly."
Through my Eclipse senses, I felt Caleb's power. It was enormous. Controlled. Refined.
He was stronger than most faculty. More skilled than many professionals.
What was someone like him doing at Silverwood?
"That's enough," Professor Thorne said. "You'll be placed in advanced classes. Possibly independent study. We'll assess further."
Caleb nodded. Returned to the sidelines.
Found me watching. Held my gaze.
Something passed between us. Recognition. Connection. Understanding.
But I didn't understand. Didn't recognize. Didn't know him.
So why did it feel like I should?
After demonstrations, I went to the roof. My thinking spot.
Liam found me there. "You're brooding."
"I'm confused."
"About?"
"Caleb Webber. The new transfer."
Through the mate bond, I felt Liam's immediate attention. Slight jealousy. Protective instinct.
"What about him?"
"He feels familiar. Like I've met him before. But I haven't. I'm certain."
"Maybe he just has one of those faces. Familiar-looking."
"It's not his face. It's his energy. His presence. Something about him resonates. Through my Eclipse senses. Through my mark. I can't explain it."
"Should I be worried?"
"About what?"
"You being drawn to another wolf. Again."
I looked at him. Felt his genuine concern. His fear of losing me.
"No. You shouldn't be worried. You're my mate. My bond. My choice. Caleb is just confusing. Not threatening."
"You said the same thing about Aiden once."
He was right. I had.
"This is different. Aiden was a mate bond. Fated. Undeniable. This is just recognition. Familiarity. Curiosity."
"Curiosity killed the cat."
"Good thing I'm a wolf."
Despite his worry, he smiled. "Just be careful. New mysterious transfers rarely mean good things."
"I know. I will be."
Through the mate bond, we shared understanding. Trust. Love.
But also awareness. That something was happening. Something we couldn't control or predict.
That evening, I tried to sleep. Couldn't.
Kept thinking about Caleb. About the familiarity. About the pull.
My Eclipse mark pulsed. Warm. Insistent.
Like it recognized him. Like it knew something I didn't.
I touched the mark. Channeled power through it. Searched for answers.
And I felt it. Faint. Distant. But unmistakable.
A connection. To Caleb Webber. Through the otherworld. Through something deeper than magic.
Like my mark knew his energy. Had touched it before. Recently.
But that was impossible. I'd never met him.
Unless.
Unless the mark recognized something else. Something beyond this life. This body. This existence.
But that was ridiculous. Impossible. Fantasy.
I forced myself to sleep. To stop obsessing. To let it go.
But as I drifted off, I felt it again.
That inexplicable pull. Toward Caleb Webber. Toward answers I didn't have. Toward a connection I didn't understand.
And in my dreams, I saw him. Not as Caleb. As someone else. Someone I knew. Someone I loved.
But when I woke, the memory faded. Leaving only the feeling. The certainty.
That Caleb Webber wasn't just a new student.
He was something more. Something important. Something destiny had brought to Silverwood.
For me.
