A few days had passed and Mia went about her life as usual, looking for a job.
“Any luck?” She was startled by Jenny, who was on the other side of the door when she opened it.
“No.” Mia sighed and Jenny engulfed her in a warm hug. She knew what Mia was going through since where she had hoped to get a job didn't work out.
Mia's phone beeped twice to signify a message has been dropped
“Won't you check that?” Jenny asked her, as She had broken out of the hug and was now staring in an awkward manner.
“What? I'm hungry, what's for lunch?” Mia brushed her question about the message. Besides, it was just a normal text message as always. Or, maybe, one of her debtor threatening messages.
“Well, there's pizza in the kitchen, you can have some.” Jenny went to a seat on the couch as she pressed the remote, searching for a perfect channel to watch.
Mia, on the other hand, rushed to the kitchen where the box of pizza was and as she opened the box, she began to munch on it with every breath in her. She was so hungry and stressed from all the trekking and talking.
After eating, she came back to the living room where her bag was, and she decided to go through messenger to see who it's from and what excuse to tell.
It displayed one new messages on the screen, but something was off. The number wasn't stored, and it didn't look familiar. Not even with that of the network customer center line. It was completely an unknown number.
She clicked on the message as her eyes darted through every line and her mouth opened. She couldn't believe what she was reading.
“Ahhh…. Can this be true?” She screamed from the couch, and Jenny flinched when she saw how her friend was screaming.
“What's wrong?” Jenny asked as Mia began dancing for joy. But Mia was too excited to spill it out, “Hey girl, tell me what's going on?” She was curiously expecting an answer and that was when Mia came closer to show her the message too.
“I have been called out for an interview for the baby sitting job.” She said it out loud and her friend screamed in so much joy.
“But wait, can this be true?” Jenny collected the phone from Mia's hands and her eyes scanned the message again.
“And oh yes, it is real and set for tomorrow. Oh my gosh!” Jenny screeched at the top of her lungs, “Go girlfriend!” She yelled, joining Mia in her crazy dance.
“What's going on?” Gideon rushed down the stairs, his eyes staring at the both of them that were busy dancing.
Seeing how they were, he wanted to go back to his room but stopped when he heard Jenny's comment.
“Well, your sister just got herself a chance for a job.” Jenny answered.
“What?!” Gideon's eyes widened.
“Not a job, Jenny, just an interview.” Mia smiled, and she was exhausted due to all the dancing.
“Well, the job is good as hers because the application which was posted online has been closed. I checked out the website yesterday.” Jenny gazed at Gideon, who had instantly started to make his own funny dance moves.
“I'm so glad, Mia, you deserve this.” Jenny gave her a bear hug as tears trailed down her cheek.
“I know…” both girls burst into tears and soon, Gideon also joined them. He was doing the robot dance, and the girls couldn't help laughing so hard that they started to cough.
“Okay, okay, that's enough now.” Mia pleaded while trying to catch her breath.
“What are you going to wear?” Jenny instantly switched mood. She asked while thinking as if she could see Mia's clothes.
“Anything.” Mia responded it a smile and Jenny almost swore at her.
“I have a black fitting gown, you can wear that.” Jenny swung her waist happily.
“No, I'm going to dress normally.” She replied with a grin, and she could see the change of facial expression on both Jenny and Gideon, “I want to be myself.” Mia added, and she earned a weird glare from them.
“Okay girl, suit yourself then.” Jenny gave up already. She knew how headed Mia was, “Just come back with good news and not a broken rib this time.”
“Jen!” Mia jokingly called out.
“What? I'm just saying. You got your injuries from that house…. I just hope they are not inviting you over to break your bones too.” Jenny commented and they burst into laughter.
Mia, on the other hand, remained grateful. She thought of any possible reason why she could have been called back, but then it was nothing else than that small girl she helped that came across her mind.
She desperately wanted the day to end. Because of that, Mia woke up early the following day, freshened up, packed her hair in a ponytail and took the required documents she needed.
“What?! You're going like that?” Jenny gazed at Mia like what she wore was an abomination.
“Hug joggers and huge t-shirts paired with canvas is the main deal one.” She flashed Jenny a smile before exiting the house.
“Oh, Mia, you really are something.” Jenny gazed at the door for a little while before continuing with her chores. She didn't understand why Mia won't let them help her out with anything.
Mia moved on the way and couldn't stop thinking about the message. “Maybe luck was on her side this time.” She smiled at the thought that went on in her mind.
While on a bus, heading to the house for her interview, her buzzing phone snapped her out of thought and when he looked at the caller, she grinned and wasted no time picking it up.
“Congrats girl…” Betty screamed from the other side of the call.
“Yeah, baby girl. I'm so happy for you.” Nick added, like he was dragging the phone with Betty.
“How did you find out?” Her eyes widened when she heard them congratulating her.
“Jenny, of course.” Betty yelled and Mia was forced to roll her eyes while smiling.
“Why didn't you want to tell us?” Nick's voice was heard.
“Because I haven't gotten the job yet…. You know what, guys? I'll call you later, I'm almost close to the place.” Mia told them urgently.
“Ok bye girl. Good luck…” Betty giggled.
“Thank you.” She replied with a smile embedded on her lips.
“Thanks for the ride.” Mia said while stepping out of the car, “Here is your money.” She handed over with a bold smile.
After the driver drove away, Mia turned to stare at the gate. Taking in a deep breath, she walked towards the gate and checked her time before knocking on it.
“How may I help you?” A voice asked, and Mia swallowed before giving a response.
“My name is Mia, and I'm here for the interview.” She answered.
“Miss, are you sure the boss is expecting you?” The voice asked another question.
“Yes, I'm here for an interview with your boss. I was texted yesterday and asked to come here.” She replied, feeling awkward and a lot crossed her mind.
“Was I being played on by hackers?” She asked, wondering what to do if her thoughts come true.
“What a bit. I will get back to you.” The person answered. Though he didn't show himself, but she sensed he was looking at her from somewhere. And that was when her eyes caught the small camera.
After two minutes, the gate started rolling on its own, “Ok, come in.” The voice urged her from the speaker. Her mind calmed down.
She moved into the compound, her eyes darting around as she recalled how she was thrown out the last time. She walked down the path she was directed until she came to a huge wooden door.
“Hello?” She knocked on the door.
“Who is…” Tyler stopped when he opened the door and spotted the young lady.
“How may I help you?” He gazed at her curiously.
“Good morning, sir, I'm here for the interview.” She replied with a smile on her face. She used that to hide the fact that she was nervous.
“Oh good. Come with me.” The man in front of her held a neutral expression all through their conversation, and it got her even more nervous. She couldn't help but rubbed her hands together as she followed him behind.
“Sit here and let me know if I can help you with anything. Do you need a drink?” He asked standing strength with his straight facial expression.
“No. I'm okay. Thank you.” Mia answered and bowed her head.
“Okay. The boss will join you soon.”
“Thank you so much, sir.” She sat down on the expensive looking cushion.
As she waited, her hands pressed each other as she exhaled continuously.
Her mind was diverted to the click-clack sound that came from the boss and his daughter, who were descending the stairs.
She squinted her eyes to get a better view, and it wasn't clear to her why her heart began to race. He looked familiar. Really familiar, but where have she seen his face before?
Her eyes diverted to the little girl smiling back at her. It's the girl she saved from the tree.
“She is the one.” Mia heard the girl whisper to her dad.
Mark and Mia's eyes met, and it flashed in her head.
“No. This can't be possible.” She said to herself as she totally became uncomfortable.
