Soon, the day Mia planned to go for the job interview came. She wanted to wake up early and had set her alarm to ring, but to her greatest surprise, she woke up late.
Without wasting more time, she hurried out of the house without having a bite of anything. Even when Jenny forced her, she refused.
She looked at her wristwatch and sighed.
“I can still make it early.” She said to herself.
She was very excited, but her excitement died on the road when it seemed like the devil had planned her with traffic. The road was usually free but for some reason, there was a traffic and Mia almost swore loud but bit her lower lip.
“Can you go any faster?” She asked the taxi driver in panic.
“No. Not possible.. The traffic is something I don't understand.” The cab driver replied, looking confused as well.
Mia sighed. She had already made up her mind to go for the interview because she did the math and was able to calculate how much the bills can help her.
“I can even rent a small apartment.” She thought to herself.
The traffic didn't seem to be stopping, so, she hopped out of the cab and trekked her way some distance. And there, she saw a little accident. She was glad, she got out and decided to trek. After some distance away, she got into another cab.
After all, she finally got to the mansion. She couldn't believe that if the work favors her, she would be living in such a place. However, the discouraging crowd made her wonder if she ever stood a chance. Everyone here was dressed in their best attire except for Mia who was only putting on a Jean and a normal t-shirt as usual.
“Would I ever get a chance?” She questioned herself, still gazing at the ladies who looked so hot and beautiful.
Designer bags, clothes, dresses. She swallowed hard the fear she was feeling as she proceeded to stand behind others.
Of course, she came late. The gate too was closed, so, they had to wait for those inside.
It was almost an hour and Mia remained in panic as it wasn't time for her to be called up yet. The scorching sun wasn't helping either and due to the intense heat, Mia stood up to get a place to sit away from the sun.
While strolling about because her space was reserved since she signed others not to take her spot and also, security was watching. Her phone rang and eyes stared her direction.
She walked by the corner and picked up, “Hey, Mia.” Jenny called out immediately.
“Hey Jenny.” Mia sounded patched as her throat was dry. The heat was tolling on her and sweat glands in her body became active. One would think her body was crying. Under her arm were a bit wet.
“How's it going? Did you get it? Are you still waiting in line?” Jenny asked excitedly.
“No Jenny. I got here a bit late and now, I'm searching for a place to hide from the sun. I feel my skin peeling off.” She complained while turning her CV into a hand fan.
“Don't overexaggerate. Remember, no pain, no gain? Always remember that…. I'm rooting for your girl.” Jenny cheered.
“Thanks dear…. Is Gideon back from school?” Mia asked, placing the file over her head to prevent the sunlight from hitting her even more.
“Yeah, he's eating and would probably go to sleep after taking his meds. He wishes you good luck.” She said, and Mia could actually hear his voice in the background.
“Thanks, and please be sure he takes the meds. I'm going to move around for a bit, my legs are tired.” She spoke before ending the call.
Mia brought out her hand towel and wiped off the sweat on her face. She thought the last days would be less crowded, but she turned out wrong. Who knew women could be this many in a town.
“You haven't picked anyone, and I'm reminding you that, it's a day left.” Victor spoke up from behind.
“Yeah, I know it's just that…” Mark didn't finish his statement when he got interrupted by Victor.
“You can't find anyone like you. Just look for someone you can trust and would love your daughter.” He explained.
“ I'm exhausted already.” Taylor commented.
“I know what I'm looking for. I'm tired of hearing I'll call 911 when your daughter's in danger. Who would save her before they arrive? And some others look like sluts.” He explained to Victor, looking frustrated as well.
“You have a point there.” David's hand was on his beards, “But you have to be positive. Nothing would go wrong… You wanted a nanny. You only have to risk it.” He stated further.
Mark sighed, he would rather not take the chances, he wouldn't stop looking until he found the perfect person. They have picked a few individuals just in case, they would interview them privately.
“There are still lots of people here. Who knows, the right person you're looking for might be within reach.” Taylor replied dryly. He had been so occupied, going through files, that he hadn't been listening to any of their conversations. The CVs submitted belonged to a few teachers too.
“Taylor, I prefer you be quiet.” Victor warned with a smirk.
“You know I wouldn't, he's my brother, and we're talking about my niece here.” He smirked back.
“Do I perceive you being responsible?” Mark asked with a raised brow and Victor burst into laughter that provoked Taylor and he rolled his eyes.
“Think whatever you want, but I'll like to tell you that we have limited time, and you should speak less, Victor. Less talking, more working.” Taylor said with a frown as he continued what he was doing.
Mia, on the other hand, moved around the huge place, her eyes roaming around the compound through the spaced out gate. She had never seen any compound as huge as this. There was a fountain, trees and it's wide.
She moved around the to see enough of the environment. It looked so beautiful. And as she was about go back to her spot, her eyes caught sight of something in the trees.
“What's that?” She asked herself and her heart, contemplating if to go closer.
She took a closer look, and she saw clearly what it was. It seemed like a big animal or a human being trying to climb down from the three, but it's abortive because the branches were coming off. And she wondered why, whoever it was, wasn't calling for attention.
Mia wanted to overlook because, she felt it might be one of the girls trying to hide but got stucked instead. She was about to turn when she noticed the figure. It was a child. Not very little.
“Oh no, how will she get down from there?” Mia yelled as she looked up at the girl who had no choice but to hug the tree so tight while thinking of how to get down without hurting.
She moved slowly and flinched when someone shouted to get her attention.
“Hey! That's a restricted area for you.” The guards were huge, and it made Mia want to enter the ground.
“Yes, but… something caught my attention among the trees.” Mia tried to alert them, but they didn't take her serious.
No one should blame them, many girls had tried to cook up lies so to get access into the compound. Some said they were specially called by Mark, which was all lies. So, they didn't even make any attempt to know whether Mia was lying or not.
“Miss, go back to your lane!” One of the securities yelled at Mia furiously.
She felt scared, but the child's safety was on the line. Suppressing her fears she was feeling, and calming her raging heart, she was able to gather enough courage to answer them.
“I'm sorry, I didn't mean to, but it seems there's a little girl in that tree.” She pointed to the tree.
“Miss, we're going to ask you to leave if you don't behave. Don't make us send you out of the interview by telling our boss that you're snooping around his compound.” They looked serious, and their height towered over Mia. They didn't even look in the direction she pointed. Not only that, but they were done with the silly tricks played by the ladies, even if Mia wasn't joking.
