CHAPTER 40

TRAVIS

I hear somebody come into the hospital room and I slightly open my eyes and see that it is just one of the nurses checking on Adam. I roll over to check my phone and see that it is almost 9 in the morning. I must have really needed sleep to sleep through quite a few visits from the nurses.

She noticed that I was moving, “I am so sorry that I woke you up.”

“It is totally okay. I don’t normally sleep this long but I guess my body is just exhausted from the past few days. Is there any update on his condition?”

I get up and make my way over to her.

She looks up at me, “The doctor will be in here shortly to give you some updates.”

“Okay, thank you so much!”

She nods at me before walking back out of his room and I go over to him to place a kiss on his forehead. With every second that passes by the more and more I just want him to wake up. So I can look into those beautiful eyes and kiss him with every feeling in my body. But, also because I need him for support and to help me get through this and find Lucy.

No matter how much I just want to go out there and find her myself I know deep down I can’t. Hopefully her dad knows some people that can actually help us. Not saying our detectives are doing their best to get her back. But, I know that they have more stuff to do then just find my wife. Even though my boss asked the detective to make this case his priority.

My phone dings and I walk back over to my cot to check it to see that it is Lucy’s mom.

Hey honey! We are up and

about to head that way! Do

you want anything for

breakfast?

Yes ma’am that would be

amazing! Thank you!

When I say they are the best, they are the absolute best! I feel like shit that I didn’t reach out to them sooner than I did. Even though they said it was fine and they understood, I still feel like shit.  I feel like the worst husband and son-in-law and the quicker we get her back the quicker everything will be okay.

About 20 minutes go by and her parents are walking in his hospital room. I get out of the chair as I walk over to them and bring them both in for a hug. They hand me my breakfast and I smile up at them.

“Good morning you two! Thank you so much for my food! Did you guys get any sleep last night?”

Her mom speaks first, “You are very welcome honey. We tried our best to get some sleep. Did you get some sleep?”

“I did, I don’t remember falling asleep or any nurses coming in and out throughout the night. So I am assuming I slept pretty damn good.”

Her dad chimes in, “Well good, I hope you did because we have some kinda good news.”

“What? Really?”

Her dad puts his hands up, “Yes son, my buddy over at the FBI found out the woman has been in the area for a few months. And the number she was texting from has been turned off since she attacked Adam and kidnapped Lucy. The few months she had been in the area she stayed around a lot at Lucy’s job and near your house.”

“She has been stalking us for months? She took that long to say something? Why?”

He shakes his head, “The only connection we can find is….Is Adam.”

“Why Adam? What did he do?”

Her mom speaks up, “From what they were saying, they can’t seem to figure out what her reasoning is. I know you guys said that you decided not to go out much all together. Is there anywhere else you guys have gone besides that club?”

“No, we stayed pretty secretive until New Year’s Eve the first time we went to the club. Besides the night of the attack when we wanted to get our minds off of everything.”

Her dad speaks,”We will keep digging and see what we can find out about her. Her phone location only became active when she was here. So I am not sure where she came from but we will try and find it out.”

“Well maybe we can get to the bottom of it and maybe Adam can wake up soon. He might know her, I mean I have her picture now and I can’t figure out who she is.”

I look over at Adam as he is still unconscious just laying in the bed. I walk over to the side of his bed and take his hand in mine. I jump as I feel him squeeze my hand or did I just imagine that. I look over at her parents.

“I swear I just felt him squeeze my hand.”

Her dad runs out of the room and comes back a few minutes later with a nurse with him. She comes up to the opposite side of the bed and starts checking him out. Within seconds of her checking on him his body starts moving. His hand squeezes mine again as his feet and legs start moving under the blanket.

He mumbles a few faint words, “Help Lucy.”

“What handsome? Don’t force it.”

The nurse starts taking out his breathing tube so he doesn’t have to struggle around it. She carefully pulls it out of his mouth and his chest relaxes as he squeezes my hand again. I push his hair out of his face before I see his eyes open up and he looks straight at me.

He clears his throat before saying, “Help Lucy!”

“We know babe, some woman took her after she bashed you on the head. You have been in the hospital for a couple of days. I am so glad you are okay!”

I lean in and place a kiss on his lips as he immediately kisses me back.

Tears start filling his eyes, “I am so sorry I couldn’t keep her safe. I am so sorry babe.” He looks over and sees her parents, “I am so sorry to you guys as well. I couldn’t keep you daughter safe.”

“It's…..”

Her dad speaks over me, “Son, it is not your fault at all. This woman is obviously crazy and did something drastic. Nobody could have predicted this. We aren’t mad or upset with either of you. We will just work together in getting her back.”

“Like he said, it is not your fault babe. I am just so glad you are awake and talking again. Do you need anything? Do you want anything?”

He coughs, “Some water would be nice and whatever smells delicious is here!”

I grab the water glass off the table and pour him a cup. I grab the bag from my breakfast and pull it all out on the table.

“Here you go babe. They got it for me for breakfast but you need it more than me.”

He drinks some of the water and smiles at me, “I love you, babe!”

“I love you too, babe!”
