10. Reason Why Cancel
10. Reason Why Cancel
Yes, Florence knew everyone had secrets. But, she felt she didn't have any secrets that would jeopardize her career. David wouldn't find her. He's just bluffing.
Florence could tell David was the man she now hated. It's ironic, she knows, when they only met yesterday. She is reluctant to think about him, because it will only make her mood worse. This was the first time she had encountered a client who was so difficult. Not dealing with him would be better. There are many clients who will queue up for her to help, losing one won't mean anything to her. It's very frustrating, but it's better that she needs to forget about him.
Today Florence has appointments to meet with some of her clients. And it's a busy day, because she's meeting three people.
She was about to leave the house, but just as she locked the door, her cell phone rang. She took it out of her bag and picked it up when she realized who was calling.
"Oh, Mandy, what's up? I was just about to go see you." Florence proceeded to her car when she had made sure she had locked the house.
Suddenly, however, Mandy's answer stopped her in her tracks.
"Good, just in time, I have something to tell you."
Florence wondered. Now her brows were furrowed. She was already sitting in her car. "What's going on?"
"We should cancel our appointment today. It's a good thing you haven't left yet."
"Oh..." Florence did not expect to get such a sentence. Surprisingly, she was quite surprised. "Well, did you suddenly have something to do?"
"Nothing, but—"
"It's okay, we can reschedule our meeting. I'm fine with it."
"It's not like that." Mandy answered quickly. "Look, I actually want to cancel our appointment. That's all."
There was a pause of a few seconds. Florence was just trying to process it. She blinked briefly, before finally answering. "Why? Why did you change your mind?"
"It's not a big deal."
"Hey, you can tell me. If you feel—"
The connection was suddenly cut off. Mandy just turned it off abruptly. In fact, the intonation of the voice she said was more indifferent and flatter, you could say that there was a tension created, as if talking to Florence was really tiring. Perhaps that's because she cut the connection unilaterally. This is very different from last night, when Mandy contacted her cheerfully and hopefully. But now everything had changed. What's going on? Florence pondered with wonder.
Indeed, today Florence has three clients scheduled to meet, one of whom is Mandy, and the schedules are all set. Mandy got the first slot. So, what now? Florence has an empty schedule. This wasn't supposed to happen.
Something was wrong with Mandy, Florence just knew it.
"I'm going to see her," Florence said as she started her car. It was best if she wanted to pry into why Mandy had canceled their appointment. There was no clarity here. She felt the need to know.
That's how the decision was made. Florence drove to Mandy's residence, which happened to be known by her from the beginning. Long story short, she finally arrived. She without hesitation rang the bell, which happened to be opened by Mandy not long after.
Florence greeted briefly with a smile, in contrast to Mandy, who was clearly still surprised by Florence's presence which could be said to be so sudden and abrupt.
"I think you understood what I said on the phone." Mandy said straight to the point. "Why are you even here?"
"Yeah, I did understand, but you hung up, I thought something was weird and I needed more explanation."
"I don't need your services anymore."
"I know." Florence nodded slowly. "I won't push you. All the decisions are yours, but can I get an explanation even if it's brief?"
Mandy was silent for a while, she seemed to be considering, and Florence waited in the hope that Mandy would fulfill her request.
"Okay." Mandy let out a long sigh, then opened the door wider, looking somewhat half forced to do so, but Florence chose to remain silent despite knowing that. She just wanted a reasonable explanation.
"Come in."
"Thanks." Florence nodded and followed Mandy into her house.
They finally sat opposite each other in the living room after Mandy invited Florence to take her place.
"I don't want to mince words, I'll explain it to you."
Florence smiled slightly. "Yeah, that's better."
"I haven't found the man I want if you're wondering. That's not why I didn't use your services to help me."
"I got it."
Mandy let out a long sigh. "I heard you don't have a partner. I mean you're single for now."
"Wait..." Florence froze in place. She looked at Mandy intensely. She was trying to absorb the information well. "I..." She shook her head softly. "Hold on, why are we suddenly talking about this?"
"So, is it true or not?"
"Yes, but..." Florence didn't understand. She was stringing together plausible possibilities in her head. "Wait, is this why you canceled the appointment we agreed on?"
"I don't want to lie, yeah more or less. So it's true that you're single, right? And you were single before you had the business you're in now."
"Mandy, it doesn't matter, just because I—"
"That's exactly where the problem lies, Flo." Mandy quickly cut Florence off. "That's exactly where the common thread is. How can I trust you when you have no experience in romance? It's so ironic."
"Yes, I know it's ironic, but you—"
"You've gotten my reasoning. Now you know." Mandy cut Florence off again without feeling the least bit guilty.
Florence was still frozen in place. She was trying to process everything. Where did Mandy know about this?
"But you know that the majority of my clients manage to realize what they want after consulting and asking for my help. I'm sure you've read their reviews and testimonials before contacting me."
"Yeah, that's true, but I suddenly felt doubtful after reading that article."
"What article?" Florence blinked. Suddenly she was in a bad mood. She had an irregular feeling. Mandy was still silent, which made Florence feel anxious about her. "What kind of article, Mandy?" She repeated firmly.
"You don't know?"
"I wouldn't ask you if I knew."
And then, Florence felt like her head had just been blown off by a bomb as soon as Mandy showed her something.
Florence instantly knew one thing.
David. This one name flashed through her mind so quickly.
