Chapter 466
Chapter 466
Amelia leaned against his shoulder, feeling a long-lost sense of peace, yet she couldn’t help but sigh:
"I thought all the nightmares could end here."
Chris turned and pulled her into his arms, his chin resting atop her head.: "Things will get better. Sirius is so strong, just like you. He'll get better."
They didn't notice that Sirius on the hospital bed frowned slightly in his sleep, his little hand unconsciously clutching the sheets tighter.
But the peace didn't last long. On the fourth morning, Amelia was jolted awake by the sharp alarm of the monitoring equipment.
She sat up abruptly from the cot and saw medical staff already gathered around Sirius's bed, while Julius rapidly gave orders.
"What's his temperature?"
"102.2°F, and still rising!"
...
Hearing the urgent words, Amelia’s legs went weak the moment her feet touched the floor. Chris caught her just in time.
They rushed to the bedside together and saw Sirius's little face burning red, his lips were cracked and dry his breathing rapid and shallow.
"How could this happen? He was fine last night..." Amelia's voice trembled uncontrollably.
Julius's expression was grave: "It might be a rejection reaction. We need to start emergency treatment right away!"
Amelia's face went pale. She unconsciously bit her lower lip until she tasted blood, only then gradually calming down.
At this moment, she wasn't the only one bearing this pain.
Chris gripped her hand tightly, both of them almost simultaneously feeling that piercing, bone-deep agony.
The test results were worse than expected. Under the dual attack of medication and toxins, Sirius's immune system had malfunctioned and was attacking his own healthy cells indiscriminately.
The medical team urgently adjusted the medication plan, but Julius told them privately to prepare themselves mentally.
"The worst case scenario is... long-term coma." The professor removed his mask and rubbed his eyes wearily. "We'll do everything we can, but you must stay strong."
Amelia stood outside the ICU window, looking at Sirius inside, his body covered with tubes.
The four-year-old looked so small, almost buried under all the equipment.
The tender little hand that had been painting the lake just three days ago now lay quietly on the pure white sheets, lifeless.
Chris steadied her from behind, feeling his wife's entire body trembling. "Go rest for a while. I'll watch over Sirius."
Amelia shook her head, her voice was hoarse:"I can't leave... What if he wakes up and can't find his mom... He'll be so sad."
Her vision began to blur, tears streaming down in large drops, wetting the back of her hand.
Amelia’s head began to buzz, and Chris's voice suddenly became distant.
In her last moment of consciousness, she saw Sirius standing in the distance by the lake and mountains, waving at her, his smile as bright as the rising sun.
Amelia fell into a long and vivid dream.
She saw herself giving birth to Sirius at the hospital. The doctor handed Sirius to Chris to see. Chris, becoming a father again, looked overjoyed, carefully holding the swaddled baby, afraid of using too much force.
At one year old, Sirius could already walk unsteadily, following behind his older siblings, anxiously trying to catch up with them.
At three, he got into a fight with Owen and came running to her in tears to complain.
At five or six, he wore a blue backpack, laughing and playing with his classmates.
It was Sirius, yet not the Sirius she knew. This boy was taller and stronger, his face showing no signs of illness, only a healthy glow.
"Sirius!" Amelia felt like she was shouting loudly, but her voice seemed to be swallowed by something.
The proportionally grown Sirius ran past her, creating a breeze, but showed no awareness of her presence.
The scene suddenly shifted to a hospital corridor.
Sirius, around twenty years old, wore a white coat and was discussing cases with several doctors.
His voice was deep and confident, his features carrying traces of Chris.
He had actually become a doctor.
At twenty-five, he met a girl he liked. They got married, and Sirius smiled so brilliantly at the wedding.
Amelia reached out to touch him, but her fingers passed right through his body.
She was like a ghost, watching her son's life unfold but unable to participate.
The dream kept jumping, each scene so real, each Sirius older and more unfamiliar than the last.
Amelia desperately tried to get his attention but could only watch helplessly as his life unfolded like a movie, herself just a lonely observer.
The most painful scene appeared in a hospital room.
Middle-aged Sirius stood by a bed where an elderly woman with white hair lay—it was an aged Amelia.
The Sirius in her dream held her hand and said softly:
"Mom, please hang on a little longer. Owen and Olivia will be back soon. They really want to see you."
Amelia jolted awake, staring into the void in disbelief, trying to distinguish reality from dream.
Without realizing it, tears had soaked her pillow.
Outside the window was Astoria's deep night. In the hospital room, only the rhythmic beeping of the monitor could be heard.
She felt a warm hand gently wiping the tears from her face.
"Chris..." She choked out her husband's name.
"I'm here." Chris's voice was hoarse and tired, yet carried a hint of obvious relief. "You've been unconscious for almost twenty hours. How do you feel now?"
Amelia struggled to sit up, staring blankly at his handsome face, but noticed from the corner of her eye that there was a streak of white in his hair.
She cried again.
"I dreamed..." Her voice was broken, "I dreamed of Sirius's whole life... He grew up, got married, had children... and became a doctor..."
Chris pulled her into his arms, letting her tears soak his shirt: "That was a good dream."
"No!" Amelia suddenly became agitated. "It was cruel! Watching him grow up but not being able to touch him, hearing him speak but getting no response... It's worse than any nightmare! How could I have such a dream?"
Chris sighed deeply and just held her tighter.
During the twenty hours Amelia was unconscious, he had been gripping her hand tightly, as if the slightest loosening would make her disappear.
"Prof. Johnston has proposed an experimental treatment plan," he finally said softly. "The success rate is less than 30%, but... if it works, Sirius might fully recover."
Amelia looked up and saw in her husband's eyes the same pain and hope as her own: "What plan?"
"They've developed a special medication." Chris took a deep breath. "But the risk is very high... it could lead to..."
"Don't say it." Amelia interrupted him, her gaze turning to Sirius in the ICU. "Do we have any other choice?"
Chris silently shook his head.
Morning light filtered through the gaps in the curtains, falling on Sirius's bed, coating his pale cheeks with a golden glow.
Amelia gently pressed her hand against the glass, as if this way she could touch her son.
"Let's try it," she finally said, her voice soft but firm. "Sirius is so strong... he won't give up."
