The Echo of Shadows
Elena’s Point of view:
"I'm here!," I cried, my voice breaking as I battled the emptiness. My power was fading as my fingertips held the brink of the disintegrating platform under me. "Orion, I can't hold on much more!!"Indeed, you can! With every second, his voice became increasingly desperate yet also determined. Elena, I refuse to let them take you. simply hang on to me.
Tears running down my cheeks, I muttered, "I'm trying," as the darkness surged once more tearing across the thin barrier of my light. But it's so chilly. I'm being pulled under here."Elena!!" His figure emerged, his shard blazingly bright as he battled the anarchy. Look at me. Center on me. You are not sliding.
Not now, while I'm here. His words calmed me somewhat, and I looked at him to get strength from the great determination in his eyes. "You don't let go either," I murmured with a shaking voice. "Promise me, Orion.""Always," he replied, his hand reaching toward me. "Take my hand now."Between us the stranger materialized, their empty eyes shining with terrible glee.
"Touching," they sneered and stepped toward me. Nevertheless, useless. She fits the emptiness now, Orion. Not sure you can see it? She's fading."no!" Orion screamed, pushing forward and pushing ahead. Its light flashed, driving the stranger back, but their laughing sounded bitter and sarcastic. They screamed, their twisted smirk expanding as you were too late. The emptiness absorbs what it wants.
And it seeks her as well."Shut down!" I seized, drawing every last bit of strength to fight the darkness. "You have no say about my future."The stranger tipped their head, their smile shockingly calm. "But neither is it up to you either. Orion, pay close attention. Watch her trip."Elena, pay no attention to them!" Orion yelled, his voice shaky with rage.
You are stronger than they could ever know. Simply grasp my hand. Tell me kindly.I stretched out, our fingers brushing briefly before the shadows returned with blinding rapidity. The power tore over us, and I shouted as the ground under me broke totally."Orion!" I started to cry and slid down the hill. His hand rushed ahead, clutching mine exactly as I dropped. He yelled, "I've got you!" his arm shaking with the weight of holding me. "Don’t you dare let go, Elena?"I gasped, fingers tightly gripping his frantically, not, "But it's pulling so hard...," said"I don't care!" he said, eyes ablaze with will. "We have not yet finished. Hear me, please?Yes, I said, tears running down my cheeks. But Orion, if it's you or me—“but."He responded sharply, "Don't," cutting me off.
"We do not choose that path. We rebel. All together. The emptiness screamed louder, its shadows reaching forth once again. The laughter of the stranger swelled, their figure gliding with terrible pleasure. "How noble," they jeers. Noble deeds, though, will not save you. Everything is void. The force of the next wave threw us both falling, and I yelled as my hold on him wavered. His hand slid from my as his light flicked dangerously."Elena!," he yelled, his voice breaking as he surged ahead.
But the shadows pulled me down into the gloom faster. His voice trembled but with love as the nothingness devoured me: "Elena... I won't stop. I will find you. His comments stayed in the stifling silence, a flimsy promise as the shadows engulfed everybody. The blackness surged, its mercilessly lashing tendrils at my ankles.
The nothingness shouted louder, a terrible scream of hopelessness coursed through my bones. My light flickering, smaller now, seemed to have given in to the inexorable might of the darkness. But Orion's voice emerged from the tumult like a lifeline through it all."Elena!," he yelled, his voice unsteady. "Don't let go! Oppose it! kindly!"I'm trying!" Tears distorting my view, I yelled as I gripped the eroding edge. My arms shook beneath the pressure; my fingertips hurt.
"Orion, I—"—"Elena, hear me!" His figure came out of the whirl of darkness, his light shining more with every deliberate step. You are not stopping. Listen to me. Not you are.I said, "I don't know if I can," the shadows tugging harder and drawing me toward the chasm. "It's too powerful—""No," he said, his voice sharp. "You are more powerful. Always, you have been more robust. You resist letting this location define you. You reject it as the winner.Behind him the stranger materialized, their hollow eyes shining with evil. Their laughter was shrill and unpleasant, like shards of ice cutting through the nothingness. “So dramatic,” they sneered.
It is pointless, though. She’s already mine.”“Shut up!” Orion hissed, whirling to meet them. His shard flashed, pushing them back, but their smile held steady.Their voices were poisonous, they screamed, "You can't stop this." Orion, she is slipping. You can feel it, can’t you? Her brilliance seems almost gone.Ignoring them, he said, "Elena!," totally focused on me. View me! Accompany me. I’m right here.”I tried to keep his eye, to get strength from his will, but the shadows swung out once more, the force sending him staggered. His light fluttered wildly."Orion!!" As his figure wavered, I started to cry and felt a panic attack.
"Don't let them take you!""I won't," he answered, his voice strong in spite of the tumult. Neither, though, are they bringing you. I'm Elena arriving. merely hang on.The ground collapsed entirely, and I yelled as I dropped. His hand rushed out, but the vacuum ripped us apart as it surged between us."Elena!," he yelled with a broken voice. His voice resonated vaguely in the stifling blackness: "Elena... I'll look for you. Whatever. Before the frigid tendrils of the nothingness closed over me, his vow was the last thing I heard."Elena," Orion's voice cried to me, shaking but relentless, cutting across the stifling emptiness.
"Don't let me leave. I come for you."I'm trying!” The frigid blackness curled tighter around me, its cold, merciless hold dragging me down. My voice broke. My shard barely kept the shadows at distance, flickering weakly in my grasp. Where are you, Orion?"I am here!," His shape emerged from the whirl of blackness, his shard shining like a lighthouse. His movements were erratic, his face marked with resolve even if his eyes showed tiredness. "Stay alongside me, Elena." Simply keep speaking. Let not the void carry you."I can't...," Tears ran down my face, I murmured. "It's dragging too forcefully." Orion, I doubt whether I am strong enough.
