Chapter 208
Chapter 208
Emily could clearly feel Bronte's rage at this moment.
Actually, if she just put herself in Bronte's shoes for a second, she could feel how suffocating it was—this person had absolutely no way out.
To this day, fate was like an invisible giant net tied around Bronte. She couldn't imagine such things happening to ordinary girls.
Perhaps she would have died long ago!
"Every time he came home drunk, he would hit me and the child. They were all the same—violent, not a bit of gentlemanly behavior. Later I said, why don't we just get divorced? My son is so smart, I just wanted to find him a perfect father, even if that father was just pretending."
Bronte cried her heart out, her eyes full of regret.
Of course, Emily was very clear that even though Bronte was crying so miserably right now, she definitely wasn't feeling regret for the evil things she had done before.
Nine times out of ten, she simply felt she hadn't been careful enough to hide it, since the police had eventually tracked it all down!
"You have no idea what kind of hard life my son, my brother, and I lived before. Someone like you, born as a rich young lady—you could never understand my pain in your whole life! He hurt my son, he killed my son, so I fed him to the pigs. That's perfectly reasonable!"
Bronte stopped her tears and suddenly looked up at Emily, becoming unusually calm for once, "Didn't you ask me earlier why his parents weren't worried or looking for him when he'd been gone so long, supposedly working? I can tell you now—because I sent his parents to hell to keep him company too!"
Just imagining this made Emily's scalp tingle.
She suddenly remembered a meeting where Delilah had said that killers in this world never kill just once—unless they're caught immediately, whenever they encounter problems in the future, the first thing they think of is fighting violence with violence.
Or you could say that people who have killed are basically demons in human form.
Bronte sat in her chair, vividly describing her killing scenes to Emily.
She laughed wildly, "You don't know—those people's heads were really disgusting, all bloody and mushy, brains splattered on the ground. It took me forever to clean up. Those pigs didn't really like eating human brains, maybe because they were so bad that even their meat tasted terrible!"
When Emily left the interrogation room, she felt her legs go weak.
Even though her job meant she'd dealt with corpses for so long and could perform autopsies with ease.
But now, hearing Bronte's words with her own ears, she couldn't imagine how such a small, thin woman had managed to dismember and dispose of bodies.
"How are you? Are you okay?"
William quickly appeared in front of Emily.
Just as she was about to stumble and fall, he reached out in time and grabbed Emily's arm, helping her stand steady.
Emily collected herself and glanced back at her colleagues behind her, "I'm fine. I'll go home and rest, come back tomorrow!"
Emily's mind couldn't calm down right now. Even if she stayed, she couldn't do much—better to go home, take a good bath and sleep, recharge her energy.
Seeing Emily's pale face, William offered, "I'll take you home."
"No need."
Emily refused decisively, forcing out a weak smile, "I'd rather go back alone. I want to clear my head."
She pointed at the interrogation room in the distance, where Bronte was being held.
The words William was about to say were already on his lips, but he had to swallow them back.
Delilah came out from inside and jogged over, craning her neck to look at Emily's departing figure, "Captain Brown, why aren't you following her? What if something happens to Emily later?"
"No need. She's a medical examiner—she should be used to scenes like this by now."
William was quite certain, his handsome face showing slightly furrowed brows.
Delilah beside him was anxious, "It's not the same, okay? The bodies she's seen... I can't explain it to you, but mainly this Bronte is a bit too crazy. If ordinary people heard her words, they'd probably have nightmares for months!"
"I know."
William responded quietly, sounding somewhat perfunctory.
At that moment, Emily had already taken a cab and left the police station. She chose to go to a dessert shop in the south of the city.
Whenever she encountered something upsetting before, she would choose to eat some sweets. Psychologically speaking, this was the fastest way to restore mental energy.
Desserts can help people secrete dopamine.
Unexpectedly, just as Emily entered and sat down, she casually looked up and caught sight of a familiar figure entering her view.
She looked at William with surprise, "How did you get here?"
William was carrying several cake boxes, walking in her direction.
Seeing Emily also here buying desserts, he shrugged and said in a casual tone, "Didn't you tell me before that when you're under too much psychological pressure, you can eat some desserts to relax?"
"What about this shop?"
Emily looked around and didn't see William with any girl.
You know, it was already quite unusual for a grown man to buy desserts to eat, let alone coming here alone.
Originally, Emily had been feeling nauseous and uncomfortable after interrogating Bronte.
But now she had an expression of watching the drama unfold as she looked at William, "Don't tell me you actually have the same preferences as me?"
"What nonsense are you talking about?"
William glanced at her lightly and explained for once, "I bought them for you. I saw you sharing this dessert shop with Delilah and the others before. I was planning to buy these and go check on you, didn't expect to run into you here."
"I didn't expect Captain Brown to actually buy them for me."
Emily's gaze focused on the cakes William was carrying.
How did he know?
She didn't like overly sweet desserts, so tiramisu was just right.
"Why are you looking at me like that?"
William raised his eyebrows, looking at Emily suspiciously with confusion in his eyes, "I really was going to check on you."
He opened his phone screen and showed Emily his chat with Jonathan.
