Chapter 271 Cat and Mouse 27
Cat

Fuck Psych and fuck doctor smith as well. He was too nice for his good. He should have hit Psych back, although I wasn’t sure that would have ended well. At the very least I should have allowed them to call the police on him. A few nights in the cells would have done him good.

But noooo

The doctor who had saved my life when I had lost my husband had done what he always did with someone in need. He took him under his wing and offered him a god damn beer.

Blowing out a breath I rolled over on the bed. Taking the covers with me and getting my legs tangled in them. It was too hot and the fact that I had been a raging hormonal mess since I had got home wasn’t helping matters.

Fucking Pysch. Grumbling I buried my face in the pillows and beat my fists into the mattress as I let out a silent scream.

“Cat?”

I froze. Clearly the pillows had muffled my hearing because I hadn’t heard him use his key to get in and I was positive I had locked the door.

Remaining still I held my breath and didn’t answer him. With any luck he would think I was asleep and leave.

The mattress dipped. “Cat ,can we talk?” His warm hand touched my shoulder. Making me jerk.

“I’m asleep.”

His chuckle was low. “I’m pretty sure you’re not.”

Groaning, I flipped back onto my back, and there he was. Chiselled face, beautiful long hair. Eyes that I felt like I could drown in. I tore mine away before I could do something stupid like fall into them.

“What do you want Psych.” I asked and not waiting for him to answer I swatted his hand away. “Stop touching me. I don’t want you here.” I growled.

His hand dropped to his side. Fingers flexing in and out of his palm. “I know I fucked up.”

“Do you think?” I snarled. “Personally I don’t think fucked up quite covers it. You attacked a married man in his own home. In front of his wife and kids.”

“It’s cool. Me and Matt are-“

I sat up so suddenly that I almost smashed our faces together. “It’s not cool, Psych. It’s not! You hurt someone and you embarrassed me.”

“I know.” For a second he closed his eyes. Pain rippled across his face.

“Tell me why?” The moment I said the words I realised it was the wrong thing to say because I knew he had feelings for me. And they were feelings I couldn’t return. I wasn’t ready for this conversation.

“Jealousy.” He whispered. “I saw you and him in the hospital and I got jealous. Then when I thought you were going upstairs with him.” He ripped his hands though his hair. “I lost it. I think that’s the moment I realised that I was falling-“

I smashed my hand over his mouth. “Stop.” I ordered. “Don’t say another word. I don’t want to hear it.”

I felt his lips quirk up in a smile against my palm and then slowly he pulled my hand free. His other hand reached out to touch my curls.

“You might not want to hear it but you need to.”

I closed my eyes, screwing them up.

“You can’t hide away from this Kitty Cat.”

He might say that but I could. I had been hiding away from feelings for ten years. I could do another ten or twenty easily. Just maybe not when he was around.

“I love you.”

The moment the words hit my ears I slapped him. Rocking his gorgeous face back. When he met my eyes again there was no shock or even pain in his eyes. I was pretty sure that I’d hurt myself worse than I had hurt him.

“No.” I shook my head. “No it’s not even been a week Psych. You can’t fucking be in love with me. It’s against the rules and-“

Grabbing my cheek he smashed his lips down on mine to silence me. I fought against him. Beating my fists on his shoulders. He didn’t let me go. His tongue lapped against the seam of my lips , demanding access.

Five seconds later I gave it to him. My body so softened into his and before I knew what was happening he had me pressed down on the bed. My knee was hiked up over his hip.

“Maybe I’m not in love with you.” He muttered against my lips. “Maybe it is too soon but I am falling Kitty Cat. I am falling so fast if terrifies me but I know one thing.” He sucked on my bottom lip. Tugging it away from my teeth.

“I want to see where this goes. We deserve that. I think we could have a future-“

A future? I had thought that once before as well. I’d let myself be happy and hope and the universe had ripped it all away from me.

It had ripped my whole soul out at the same time.

I couldn’t do that again. Not even for the beautiful man above me. I just wasn’t brave enough.

I turned my face to the side, avoiding his kisses. “Please leave.”

“Wait what?”

“I don’t love you. I can’t love you. Not ever. This was meant to be casual. That’s what we agreed.”

I felt him lift himself off of me. “You can’t be serious.”

“It was just sex Psych. You are the one who changed the rules. So I am going to have to ask you to leave.”

The springs of the mattress creaked as he stood up. And I still didn’t look at him. I couldn’t. I knew that if I did I would break.

“Fuck Cat.” He swore. “I know it’s scary and you don’t want to get hurt but we have the start to something so good and-“

Finally I twisted my head to face him. Agony shone out of his eyes.

Like I had ripped out his soul in the same way my dead husband had done mine.

“Leave Psych.” I said flatly. “And don’t come back. I don’t want to see you again.”

For a second he looked like he was going to argue back, and then a sigh rattled his chest. His shoulders straightened and after a little digging in his pocket he tossed the little silver key on the bed.

My eyes met his for one last time and then he turned and walked away.
