Chapter 268 Cat and Mouse 24
Chapter 268 Cat and Mouse 24
Psych
She missed him did she?
Anger bubbled up in my chest. She fucking missed him.
That’s what she had told him as she clung to him like he was lifeline only hours after clinging to me in the same way.
I’d been played. Well and truly because it was pretty clear that she was extremely comfortable with the dude in the white coat. Intimately comfortable.
So much for me being the only man since her husband, you didn’t hug a man like that without him having intimate knowledge of your body and you sure didn’t say you missed him.
Setting my shoulders. I moved towards them. My phone already in my hand and pressed to my ear. If this was the game she was playing she was going to lose.
“Hey babe.” I said as the woman answered the call. “Just checking in to see if you wanted-“ my feet slowed as I approached them. “Hey kitty Cat.” I said casually. “And-“ I eyed him up and down. Older than I had presumed from the back. A little older than Raven even.
My lips thinned. “I’m Psych.” I said.
“Dr Smith.” He held his hand out for me to shake. I looked at it for a second, my nose wrinkling. He dropped his hand with a frown. Glancing towards Cat.
I wanted to scream at him not to fucking look at her. I wanted to pluck his eyes out of his skull and feed them to him.
“Anyway,” I half gave him my back. “Daisy wanted to talk to you before you left.” I said to her. “I got to go.” I took a step away. “Yeah sorry about that Babe,” I said into the phone. “Was wondering if you were free tonight.”
I didn’t even hear what she said in return. My whole conversation was on the way Cat sucked in a startled breath. And it might have been my imagination but that little inhale sounded hurt.
She had no right to sound hurt, over and over again she had made it clear that we weren’t a couple. Seeing her embrace another man was just the final nail in the coffin. If she wanted to flirt with another male in front of me, then that was it.
We weren’t together, if she was free to do that then so was I. Only I’d play the game better.
I heard her feet start moving towards me and ended the call. “I gotta go babe, I’ll call you later.” Stuffing the phone into my pocket I pushed open the door to the stairs and headed down.
“Psych.” Cat came storming down after me. “Wait up a second.”
I paused half way down, schooling my face into a bored expression as I turned towards her.
“What’s up?”
“What the hell was that about?” Puffing out a breath. She came to a stop one step away from me.
“What? I don’t know what you mean?” I acted innocent.
“Is this important? I have somewhere to be.”
Her skin tightened over her delicate features. “Going to meet the woman on the phone?”
I raised an eyebrow and said nothing.
“The one you call babe?”
“Jealous?” I queried.
“No.” Her voice shook.
“Good.” Stuffing my hands in my jean pockets I waited for her to say whatever was on her mind because it was clear that something was. She didn’t say a word. Her lips smacked together and a dent appeared between her eyebrows.
I sighed. “Glad to hear it because it’s not like we are together is it.”
“No.”
“Not like you even want to try is it . You’re ok fucking me but dating me is out of the question right?”
God my voice sounded strange. A weird mix of anger, hurt and jealousy making it higher than usual.
“I’ve told you-“ she began to say.
I cut her off. “Yeah you did tell me. You’ve made it abundantly clear what I am good for.” I snapped. “Look.”
I couldn’t even look at her. There was clear pain in her eyes, and I hated that I had put it there. “Actually don’t worry.”
I couldn’t say what I wanted to. She had made her position clear. Anything I said now would just make me look like a jealous fool. And I didn’t have any right to be jealous. She had been clear about what we were. It was me that had blurred the lines.
None of this was anyone’s fault but mine.
I moved down a step.
“Talk to me psych. What’s going on?” She reached for me. The slight touch of her fingers bringing me to a stop.
“Nothing is going on Cat.” I said through gritted teeth. “I just have places I need to be tonight and-“ my heart hammered in my chest. “Someone else will be watching out for you tonight.” Digging in my pocket, I closed my fingers around her key. Feeling the teeth digging into my skin before I handed it over to her. She looked at it for a second before her eyes swivelled to my face.
“Sure.” She muttered. “I’ll mention it to Raven now.” She didn’t say anything else as she turned on her heel and walked back up the stairs without looking back.
I stood rooted to the spot. Her key still held awkwardly in my hand.
Slamming open the door at the top she had almost disappeared fork view when I finally found my voice. “Have fun on dinner date Kitty Cat.” I called up bitterly.
She didn’t even pause. “Have fun on yours as well Psych.”
The door slammed shut behind her, leaving me alone with my thoughts. And for someone who could always read other people I didn’t know what to make of mine.
It was meant to be casual. And I had been fine with that. When over the last few days had that changed?
I couldn’t pin point the exact time but one thing was certain. It had changed. At least in my head.
What I was feeling was jealousy. The giant green eyed monster.
Shaking my head, I took the rest of the steps two at a time and headed towards my bike. I needed the wind in my face and miles of open road.
I needed to get Cat out of god damn head.
