Chapter 53 Chapter 53

Chapter 53 Chapter 53
Kyla's POV

I pressed my eyes shut because of the wind, as dust flew into the air.

The leaves on the trees waved in fury as a howl bursted out in front of me.

I coughed and pulled my skirt down as I shifted back and leaned against the bark of the tree.

“Kyla, are you okay?”

Kendrick– Was it him?

I opened my eyes slowly and I saw him in front of me, brows drawn back, forehead creased in worry.

His blonde hair was flowing in the wind as he cupped my face and watched the blood on my lips, he wiped it, looking for the wound.

His hasty gaze ran all over my body as he shifted my arm and then my legs. His chest was heaving and his lips parted.

“Tell me, where did they hurt you?” He asked, pushing my hair over my shoulder.

My eyes watered as I looked around to see all the Rogues on the floor groaning in pain as they struggled to get up.

He saved me. He came like the gods of the woods and he rescued me as soon as I called his name.

My lips wrung downwards as I threw my head back, sobbing. He leaned closer to me and pulled me into a hug.

“I'm sorry– I wasn't there to protect you.” He ran his hand through my hair as he pressed me into his arm. “I'm so sorry, Kyla.”

I pressed my eyes shut as I leaned closer to him. My heart rate came back to normal as I clung to him.

I felt safe– protected. I felt worthy for the first time. No one had ever cared for me this way before.

“Thank you,” I muttered amidst tears. “Thank you, Kendrick.”

He pulled away and carried me into his arms as he got off his knees. He turned towards Venom, barely looking at him.

His face squeezed in disgust. “You're lucky to be alive. I'm waiting for you all in the camp, your punishment awaits you.”

He looked down at me and gritted his teeth. His lips parted and I blinked and looked away.

Guilt clawing at my chest. I had put myself in this situation. If I had stayed where he left me, I wouldn't have been in danger.

“Let's go home,” he said, staring at me. I guess he was trying to see if I would protest again.

I gulped and nodded slowly. He heaved a sign and took me back towards the camp. I didn't even know the way.

I just closed my eyes and sank into his chest, with my arms around his neck and my head, on his shoulder.

“Thank you.” I muttered.

But he didn't react. He just kept looking on as he took me back.

I wish I could tell Grandma Lily that I was saved. Maybe one day I could visit her or make Daciana go see her.

We got to the camp's gate. It was a large bronze gate. The last time Kendrick brought me, I was blindfolded and unconscious.

When I even left this morning, I jumped over the back fence, straight into the woods.

As the guards saw Kendrick. They pulled the large gate open and when we got in, I saw a busy market place.

Adult Male, Female and little pups, they were doing business and as Kendrick passed with me in his arms, they stopped and bowed to him.

But as soon as we passed, I heard murmurs from the Females. Kendrick didn't seem bothered by it all.

When we got to the end of a street, he entered a vast house, it was more like a mansion. I would have doubted that this was hidden in the woods.

We entered through a smaller gate, and Kendrick took me inside and up the stairs. As we got to the corridor, I recognized the room I had been in.

“This is my room,” I said.

“Not anymore.” Kendrick responded coldly.

My eyes grew large. Where was he taking me? To the dungeon?

“I'm sorry I tried to run away. I won't do it again,” I rushed, even though I was not sure of it.

He was mute. “Please, Sir Kendrick. I–”

“You talk a lot.” He halted as he tilted his head, like he was frustrated.

“Why are you changing my room?” I asked.

“This is your room. The other one was not good enough, plus you need a room next to mine, so I'll keep an eye on you.”

I blinked at him. “What?” That room was better than what I ever had in my life.

He shook his head and opened the new room. As he stepped in my eyes caught the chandelier at the top and my jaw dropped.

I pushed him as I jumped down from his hand. I quickly looked around the room. It was close to the master's bedroom. The space could occupy two other rooms.

The furniture and decorations were of royal quality. The painting that I'm sure was auctioned was on the wall.

“No. No!” I shook my head as I stepped toward the exit. Kendrick blocked me and I bumped into his bare chest with my face.

I went red and I stepped back. “What's no?” He asked. “Is it not good enough?”

I stared at him speechless. He went to the phone on the side table. “I'll call Pamela to come upgrade the room to your taste then.”

As the phone rang, I raced to him and pulled it back, ending it.

“No, sir. I can't accept this room, I'm sorry.”

Kendrick gritted his teeth. “Why are you so stubborn? What's wrong with the room?”

I dropped my head as tears formed in my eyes. I recalled my life with my Aunt, all they told me.

How Alpha Kai rejected me because of my status. Now Kendrick was giving me a room fitting to a Luna?

“Nothing is wrong with it. It's just that it's too good for me. I'll manage the maid quarters sir. Just point it out for me.”

Kendrick's jaw dropped as he stared at me in shock.
