Chapter Twenty Seven
The moon hangs high in the sky, casting a pale light over the forest as Briar and Kade make their way back to the pack’s camp. The sounds of the forest seem to be more alive tonight—the rustling of leaves, the distant calls of night creatures, and the gentle whispers of the wind. It feels like a different world, one where everything is both familiar and new at the same time. Briar's mind is still reeling from everything that’s happened—the initiation, the acceptance, the overwhelming emotions that flood through her.
Her body is still sore from the fight, her muscles aching in a way that makes her feel alive in a way she hasn’t before. The fight wasn’t just physical. It was a test of her resilience, her will, her place within this pack, and her relationship with Kade. It was a line in the sand, one that couldn’t be crossed back over. She had proven herself, and she had done it for herself, for him, for all of them. And yet, as much as she tries to digest it all, a lingering uncertainty pulls at her.
“You okay?” Kade asks quietly, glancing at her with a knowing look, his deep voice cutting through the stillness of the night.
Briar looks up at him, her eyes a little distant. “Yeah,” she says, forcing a small smile. “Just... processing everything.”
He nods, slowing his pace to match hers, walking beside her in silence for a moment. “It’s a lot to take in. I know. But you did well. You proved to yourself that you belong here. You are part of this pack now, Briar. You always have been, but tonight, you showed everyone that you’re one of us.”
Briar’s heart beats a little faster at the mention of her place within the pack. She can feel the truth of his words, but still, something gnaws at her. “I’m still trying to wrap my head around it. I didn’t know it would feel like... this.” She gestures vaguely, unsure how to fully explain what she’s feeling. “I’m part of this now. Part of you. It’s just a lot to absorb.”
Kade’s gaze softens, and he takes her hand in his, his touch gentle but sure. “I know it’s overwhelming. But you don’t have to do it alone. We’re in this together. I’m here for you, always.” His voice dips low as he adds, “Whatever you need, Briar. Whenever you need it.”
Briar squeezes his hand, trying to gather her thoughts. There’s a part of her that feels so connected to him, so right in this space, but another part still feels like an outsider, like she hasn’t completely found her place. She had come into this world so uncertain, and while the initiation has solidified her standing, there’s still a sense of unknowing that creeps in.
“I just... want to be the person you believe I can be,” she confesses, her voice shaky but honest. “I want to be everything the pack needs, everything you need. But I don’t know how to be that. I don’t know how to balance being your mate and a member of the pack. I don’t want to fail.”
Kade stops in his tracks, pulling her gently to a stop with him. His hand cups her cheek, his thumb brushing over her skin as his eyes search hers. “Briar,” he says, his voice steady and filled with conviction. “You won’t fail. You’re already everything I need. And as for the pack, they respect you. They see you the way I see you: strong, capable, and worthy of everything this life has to offer.”
He steps closer, his forehead brushing against hers, and Briar can feel the warmth radiating from him. It’s grounding, soothing. It’s the one thing that makes her feel like maybe she can handle all of this.
“I just need time,” she whispers, the words more vulnerable than she intended. “To get used to this. To get used to you and them, all of it. I need to figure out what it means to be your mate, to be part of something this... big.”
Kade nods slowly, his breath warm against her face. “Time is something we have, Briar. I’m not rushing you. We’ll take it one step at a time. But I need you to know something.” He lifts her chin so she’s looking directly at him, his gaze fierce with an emotion she can’t quite name. “You belong here. With me. With us. Don’t ever doubt that. You don’t have to have all the answers. We’ll figure this out together.”
Briar nods, her heart swelling with emotion. “I just don’t want to disappoint you.”
“You won’t,” Kade says, his voice a quiet promise. “I’ll never let you.”
They stand there for a moment, the world around them fading into the background as they simply exist in this space, this moment. Briar feels safe in his arms, sheltered from the weight of the world outside, but there’s still something inside her that’s restless. Something that yearns for more—more understanding, more connection, more time to truly know what she’s capable of in this new life she’s entered.
The sound of footsteps crunching through the underbrush pulls them out of their bubble, and Kade’s head turns sharply, his instincts on high alert. Briar’s heart races, but she forces herself to remain calm. Kade doesn’t release her, instead pulling her closer into his protective embrace.
A shadow steps forward from the trees—one of the pack members, a strong presence that Briar recognizes immediately.
“Alpha,” the pack member says with a respectful nod, his voice low. “The others are waiting.”
Kade nods, his grip on Briar tightening briefly before he lets go. He turns to her, his eyes lingering for a moment longer than usual. “We should go back. The pack is waiting for us.”
Briar nods, her mind still swirling with everything that’s happened. But now, it feels different. She feels stronger, more sure of herself, even as the path ahead remains uncertain. Kade’s presence beside her is the anchor she’s been searching for, and with him by her side, she feels like maybe—just maybe—she can handle what comes next.
Together, they walk back toward the pack, ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead.
