Chapter Twenty Six
Briar stumbles slightly as Kade leads her away from the clearing, the weight of the initiation pressing down on her with every step. The adrenaline that had coursed through her veins just moments ago is slowly ebbing, leaving her feeling both exhausted and strangely exhilarated. Her body aches in places she didn’t know could ache, but there’s an undeniable sense of accomplishment blooming in her chest.
Kade’s hand is warm on her back as he guides her through the trees, his touch steady, reassuring. The sound of the pack retreating behind them fades into the distance, and they enter a small secluded area, a quiet place deep within the forest where only the rustle of leaves and the occasional call of a bird fill the air.
Kade turns to face her, his eyes locking onto hers. There’s something in his gaze—something deep and unspoken—that makes Briar’s heart skip a beat. It’s the same way he looks at her when he’s being vulnerable, when he’s not just the Alpha but the man who cares for her with a ferocity that she can’t quite wrap her head around.
“You did it,” Kade says softly, his voice laced with pride. “You proved yourself. I’m proud of you.”
Briar’s heart swells at his words, but her breath catches as she shakes her head. “It was intense,” she admits, her voice barely above a whisper. “I didn’t expect… that.”
Kade steps closer to her, his body radiating warmth, and she can feel the heat of his presence surrounding her, grounding her. “What do you mean? That you didn’t expect to fight? Or that it felt different?” His hands slide to her shoulders, his grip gentle, yet firm.
Briar takes a deep breath, her fingers trembling as she presses them to her temples. “Both. I didn’t know what I was walking into. The way they looked at me… I thought they were going to tear me apart.” She glances up at him, her eyes wide with the intensity of what she’s feeling. “But then, I don’t know... something clicked. I don’t know if it was instinct or just... wanting to prove something. To them. To myself.”
Kade’s eyes soften, and he reaches out to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. His touch lingers, the tenderness in it making Briar’s heart race in a completely different way. “It wasn’t just about proving yourself to them,” he says, his voice low and steady. “It was about showing yourself that you belong here. That you’re strong enough to stand with us. I’ve never seen anyone handle an initiation like you did.”
Briar bites her lip, her eyes flickering down to the ground. “I didn’t want to back down,” she says quietly, almost to herself. “But I wasn’t sure I could do it. Not after everything… after everything that’s happened.” Her hands curl into fists at her sides. “I was terrified. I felt like if I couldn’t handle them—if I couldn’t stand strong in front of the pack—it would all fall apart.”
Kade steps closer, his hands reaching out to take hers, pressing them gently between his own. “You’re stronger than you give yourself credit for. You’ve been through hell and still kept fighting. That’s why you’re here. That’s why you belong.”
Briar looks up at him, her heart hammering in her chest. “But Kade… what if I wasn’t ready for this? What if I never amready for this life? The pack, the responsibility, everything you’ve built…” Her voice cracks slightly as the weight of the future presses against her. “What if I fail?”
Kade’s grip tightens around her hands, pulling her close until their foreheads are almost touching. “You won’t fail,” he murmurs, his voice steady and firm. “I won’t let you. And I know you won’t let yourself. This life, this pack, it’s about us. About all of us standing together. You don’t have to carry it alone.”
Briar lets out a breath she didn’t know she was holding, the tension in her shoulders easing slightly at the sound of his words. Still, doubt lingers in the back of her mind, a quiet whisper she can’t quite shake.
“I just don’t want to let you down,” she admits, her voice barely audible. “I’m afraid of what will happen if I don’t… if I’m not enough.”
Kade’s thumb strokes gently across the back of her hand as he pulls her even closer, his warmth enveloping her. “Briar,” he says, his voice thick with sincerity, “you are more than enough. You always have been. You don’t have to prove anything to me. You don’t have to carry the weight of this pack on your shoulders alone. We’re a team.”
Tears sting Briar’s eyes, and she closes them for a moment, letting the moment sink in. She’s never had anyone believe in her like this. Never had anyone offer her this kind of unconditional support. It’s terrifying and overwhelming, but it’s also… something she’s never allowed herself to want.
“I don’t want to let you down,” she repeats, but this time, it’s softer, more vulnerable. “I want to be what you need. What the pack needs.”
Kade’s breath catches, and he pulls her into a fierce embrace, his strong arms wrapping around her like a shield. “You already are,” he murmurs into her hair. “You already are.”
They stand there for a moment, the sounds of the forest filling the space between them. The air is thick with emotion, the weight of everything they’ve just experienced heavy on Briar’s chest. She can feel the truth of Kade’s words settling into her bones. She’s part of something bigger now. She’s part of him. And there’s no turning back from that.
But as they stand in the quiet of the forest, Briar can’t shake the feeling that this is just the beginning. The pack may have accepted her, but there are still challenges ahead—challenges that will test her, that will test them all. And she knows she’s not fully prepared for what comes next. But for the first time, she’s not afraid of that. Because no matter what, she’ll face it with Kade by her side.
“I’m ready,” she says, her voice firm now. “I’m ready to stand with you. With the pack. No matter what happens.”
Kade pulls back slightly, his gaze soft but intense. He studies her for a moment, as though weighing her words carefully. And then, with a slow nod, he smiles, a smile that speaks of pride, love, and a promise of what’s to come.
“Good,” he says, his voice steady. “Because we’re in this together. Every step of the way.”
And for the first time, Briar believes it.
