Chapter 77 Strange Man Again
Kristen's POV
"I don't think this is a good idea," Whining, I turn to head back inside when they pull me backward.
"Only one drink, Kristen. It won't hurt the baby," Maddy urges, hooking her arm around mine.
My friends are not to be trusted. Their one glass of beer equals seven and one glass of tequila is ten.
"I just don't have a good feeling about this," I shake my head, but my feet are moving because Maddy is dragging me along with her to the car.
"C'mon, it's been so long we've had a girls' night out. Our exams are coming next week and it'd be torturous to the brain to read all that load of books."
"Fine, just one drink and then you'll drop me off at home. Calhoun doesn't want me staying out."
"Yes, Luna queen. As you wish," Sapphire gives me a mocking two-finger salute.
Chuckling, I let them pull me into the car for the drive to the club.
Maddy is in the shotgun and Sapphire is driving.
I'm sitting in the back seat because I tend to feel dizzy and nauseous from time to time and it's something I'm having a hard time dealing with. I wonder how I'll cope when studying for exams.
Of all the timing in the world, pregnancy caught up with me when it's nearing my exams.
I want to think it's just a figment of my imagination but it looks too good to be real.
A black big wolf is running along the bushes we're driving past. And the way it's looking at me is chilling.
"Do you see that?" I ensure my voice is loud as I point out the window.
"See what?" Sapphire makes a wry face as she steals a glance at me.
"There's a wolf out there," I tell them and it's dreadful that he's still running as if he's doing a marathon with our car.
"We don't see anyone," my friends chorus after staring at the window themselves.
"I'm serious, I saw it," Why the heck does he keep hiding when both Sapphire and Maddy snap their gazes in his direction?
"Who knows if it's Calhoun wanting to keep an eye on you," Maddy jokes and chuckles to herself. But I don't find this funny because I know what I saw.
"Or you're seeing things because your wolf needs a run. How long has it been since you let her out to stretch?" Sapphire questions.
"Since the fight with Ben's ex-girlfriend at Layla's funeral," I explain.
"Maybe we should go running tomorrow..." Maddy suggests.
"Right? Lots of chiseled muscles to see right after the morning run. Waiting for them to shift into humans is always the best part of the morning" Sapphire adds.
"There he is again.." My finger is already pointing out the window and when they whirl their heads to look, he's out of sight. "There's no one out there, Kristen," Sapphire frowns openly at me.
"I know what I saw," My tone is sharp because I'm over the edge now. They think I'm telling lies and it's upsetting.
"Whatever," Sapphire waves her hand away.
"Okay, okay. Let's not argue about this," Maddy butts in because she's sensing an impending argument.
"I'm serious, this scary-looking wolf keeps following us." Controlling my temper is out of the picture because I'm exasperated right now.
"Ow!" Maddy groans because I made to hit the seat in front of me but I end up knocking the back of her head.
"Sorry," I apologize and then clench my jaw. It's just impossible to stay upset when a lot of things are happening all at once.
Sapphire increases the car gear and speeds off the road.
And when I throw my head to the window once more, the wolf is gone.
Puffing out a breath, I try to relax in my seat.
Sapphire puts on music to ease the tension and then throws me a glance.
"Still seeing the wolf?" She uplifts a perfectly shaped brow at me.
"Leave me alone," I turn to my side, clearly not in the mood to speak to her. She can be a pain in the ass most times.
"I never held onto you," Sapphire tucks her tongue out at me, before tuning the music high and singing along with artiste. Maddy joins her and a smile from nowhere hits on my face.
Just as I attempt to sing along with them, Sapphire steps on the brakes and the car goes to a screeching halt.
"What's happening?" I ask.
"Holy cow, who's that person standing in the middle of the road? What do they have, a death wish or something?" I can sense the frustration in Sapphire's voice.
"Oh my god, it's a guy in all black," Maddy exclaims.
"He looks creepy," Sapphire horns for him to step aside, but he doesn't. She repeats this and got the same thing.
"Why is he on the road like that?" Maddy asks no one in particular.
"Fucking psycho wants to ruin the night."
Through the help of the car's glaring light, I see that this person is oddly familiar and I am trying to recall where I met him from, until I take a closer look and then the realization hits me hard that it's the guy from the other day.
The one who stood in front of Calhoun's car and when I politely asked him to go away, he pointed at me and then licked the car window.
Why is he out here?
Hold on a second, is he the wolf who was running along with our car?
"Sapphire, wait.." I try to stop my friend when I hear the clicking of the car door.
But it's already too late, Sapphire is already out of the car and she's approaching him like a crazed woman.
"What the fuck are you doing, creep?" she yells when she stops four feet away from him.
Maddy hops out of the car to back up Sapphire, while I remain seated, shivering as if I caught a cold.
Not because I am a coward but because I keep having flashbacks of what he did that morning. And that's not all, he's not staring
at Sapphire in front of him or Maddy who's walking over to meet them.
It's me he's looking at, and the corners of his mouth are stretching into a malicious sick grin.
