Chapter 128 The Wine Party in the Military Camp
"General Beckett, you are the bravest of Freton City, what a blessing it is for Freton City to have you!"
Amidst the flickering fires and the intoxicating aroma of wine in the Tiger Gang's camp, dozens of uniformed officers, who were all at least of the rank of Major, were gathered around the bonfire, reveling in merriment.
Upon hearing their flattering remarks, Beckett's face broke into a gratified smile.
He was tired of hearing such hollow compliments from ordinary people, but the person speaking now was Kenny, the commander of the three major garrisons in Freton City. He had status and his words carried weight.
In terms of individual soldier quality, Tiger Gang was far superior to the three armies of Freton City, but the total force of Tiger Gang was only around 4,500, while the three armies of Freton City had a total of 15,000 soldiers. Although they were not as strong as Tiger Gang in terms of overall strength, they still had some fighting power.
Kenny's disdain for Beckett grew as he watched him nonchalantly accept all the praise. However, he kept his composure and signaled to someone next to him.
That person was Marcus, the commander of the second army of Freton City.
He pulled out a bottle of wine from behind him, patted it, and said, "Here, this is Sky Nectar, the finest wine from Ravinia City. I brought it specially for General Beckett to taste."
Beckett's face lit up with joy. "Haha, Kenny is all talk, but Marcus is more generous. I've been wanting to taste this wine, but never had the chance. Come on, fill it up for me."
Marcus laughed heartily and stood up to pour the wine, but Beckett shook his head. "We are both Generals. I would feel ashamed if you poured wine for me. Robert, you do it."
Marcus looked confused.
An elderly man with a long beard, who didn't look like a military officer at all, stepped forward from behind Beckett and took the wine bottle from his hand.
‘Forget it. Everything will go according to plan, as long as he's willing to drink it. I didn't really want to pour it for him anyway!’ Marcus thought.
He grinned, but his heart was filled with cold laughter.
Today was the day when the second and third armies of Freton City joined forces to encircle and annihilate the Tiger Gang.
The wine contained a potent dose of Curare. Just a small sip would be enough to incapacitate an elephant, let alone Beckett.
The soldiers he and Kenny had brought with them were all carefully selected; they were the elite of the elite, far superior to the average quality of the Tiger Gang.
After subduing Beckett, they would retreat to a position, and the Tiger Gang, fearing to hurt their leader, would naturally be greatly reduced in combat power.
Meanwhile, the second and third armies of Freton City, who had secretly surrounded them, would launch a direct attack.
With all of them working together, the Tiger Gang could be eliminated with ease.
However, he did not notice that the bodyguard named "Robert" showed a disdainful expression when he turned around to pour wine for Beckett.
Beckett glanced at him and felt a bit more at ease.
He knew this man was under General Henry, his full name being Doctor Roberto, a master of medicine. Even if there was something wrong with the wine, it wouldn't work now.
"Don't just pour for me, fill it up for the two Generals as well."
Robert held the wine bottle and poured it for Kenny and Marcus as well.
Both of them had smiles on their faces.
Knowing Beckett's caution, he would definitely pull them to drink together. They were naturally prepared and had taken the antidote in advance.
The Curare would naturally only work on Beckett.
They raised their glasses in a toast and drank it all in one gulp.
Kenny wiped his mouth and asked casually, "General Beckett, over the years, a large portion of the military funds allocated from Ravinia City has ended up in the pockets of the Tiger Gang. Whenever I see your current military equipment, I can't help but feel envious."
Beckett smiled proudly, "This is all the result of the Tiger Gang's stellar reputation. Even the Generals from Ravinia City speak highly of our elite troops and are willing to give us more military funds. Then with better military equipment, our group's combat power increases. This cycle continues; it's the principle of the strong getting stronger and the weak getting weaker."
Kenny's expression turned cold, "I wonder who the so-called weaker ones are in your eyes, General Beckett's?"
Beckett coughed lightly and picked up his wine glass again, "Come on, let's drink."
"Go to hell with your drink!" Kenny smashed his wine glass and stood up angrily, "Beckett, you've swallowed too much military funding, it's time to spit it out."
"What do you mean?!" Beckett roared, "Do you think your second-string army can compete with the Tiger Gang?"
"What if I join in?" Marcus said leisurely, his face full of mockery.
"So, what if it's two against one? My Tiger Gang will still stand till the end!" Beckett's eyes were filled with ferocity.
Marcus just laughed, "What if you die?"
"Die in my own camp?" Beckett scoffed, "Ridiculous."
‘The time is about right, down he goes!’ Kenny calculated silently for a while, then suddenly spoke, waiting for Beckett to collapse on the ground with a look of disbelief.
However, Beckett just looked at him coldly. His expression was as if he was looking at an idiot.
"What's going on?"
Kenny and Marcus looked at each other, already knowing that for some reason the Curare had not taken effect.
"Attack!"
Marcus reacted quickly, planning to have their elite subordinates capture Beckett while the Tiger Gang's people had not noticed.
On the other side, Doctor Roberto just smiled slightly, "Down you go."
Kenny and Marcus were stunned. They felt their bones go soft, their vision blurred, and they collapsed on the ground.
It wasn’t only them. The elite of the first and second armies of Freton City, who had come with them, all fell to the ground.
This was what it looked like when Curare took effect.
Marcus was incredibly shocked and managed to say with difficulty, "Impossible, Kenny and I took the antidote; we should be fine, and our subordinates didn't drink the poisoned wine."
"Who told you that Curare only works if you drink it?" Doctor Roberto stroked his beard and laughed, "I've been eating this poison as a snack since I was eight. With me around, whether it works or not depends on whether I intervene."
"Your subordinates didn't drink it, but when I poured the wine for you, I deliberately chose an upwind position and secretly added a catalyst to the wine that would activate the Curare. By the time the aroma of the wine had drifted over, they were all poisoned."
"Doctor Roberto, you truly are a miracle doctor!" Beckett praised him in a refined manner and had his real bodyguards take Robert back to rest.
What was about to happen next had nothing to do with medicine.
"Beckett, I advise you not to act rashly!" Kenny was somewhat scared, "My and Marcus' armies are just outside, and I have a communication device on me. They know everything that's happening here."
"As long as you dare to lay a finger on us, the second and third armies will come to avenge us; your Tiger Gang won't be able to hold them off!"
Beckett sneered, "First, you overestimate your subordinates and underestimate our Tiger Gang. If it comes to a real fight, Tiger Gang is sure to win."
"Secondly, who told you that you're only facing me?"
