Chapter 118 THE WEDDING AND CONFESSIONS.
Asher
I returned inside, a smile still plastered on my face but I froze when I saw my mother scramble to her seat. I raised a brow as I took a seat opposite her.
“Who was that?” She asked.
“A friend.” I replied, tilting my head slightly. “Do you know him?” I asked, remembering the way he was staring at him earlier.
“Is he the one you worked with to eliminate the Syndicate?” She asked and I nodded.
“Yes, he has some feud with them.” I answered and she sighed, dropping her head low but she looked back up at me with a smile on her face.
“Okay but…” she paused, her eyes drifting around the place.
“But what?” I asked, leaning closer, an eyebrow arched upwards.
“It would be better to not be so close with him.” She answered and I swallowed hard, was there something I didn't know about?
“Why?” I asked and she lowered her head, sighing heavily.
“The Syndicate was responsible for his parents' death right?” She asked and I froze for a moment before I nodded. Dima could have been the one to tell her about it, my mother couldn't possibly have any connection with him.
“The Syndicate…” she paused, trailing off for a while, her eyes drifting around the room.
“What about them?” I asked, trying to calm myself that there was not possibly anything wrong but her next words left me shocked.
“I had some contact with them. At that time, they had managed to take me away from my turf and my life was in danger. So, I reluctantly agreed to work for them and they actually let me go.” She paused, taking in a deep breath. “But it was only after I revealed some information about a Mafia group.”
My eyes drifted around the room. Could she be talking about Nathaniel's parents? Her words soon snapped me out of my thoughts.
“You should be able to piece it together now. The Mafia group was the one his parents led. All though the information I gave was vague but I still think it was with my help they were able to deal with them.” She said and I swallowed hard, relaxing on my chair.
“He doesn't look like someone who would let it go so easily and I wasn't aware that you had a close relationship with him.” She paused.
I looked up to catch her gaze and honestly, I couldn't blame her, it was either her life or that little piece of information but Nathaniel didn't have it easy either.
“That’s why it would be better if you kept in touch with him less.” She said,
“I can't. I would rather tell him about this.” I said getting up to my feet, and she remained with her head lower.
“No matter what decision you make, I support you.” She paused, adjusting in her seat. “And if you want to leave, it's fine with me.” She said and I fully faced her.
“I'm not leaving and I'm ready to inherit this legacy. Don't worry about that.” I said and she nodded.
I returned to my room, and texted him. His reply was fast.
“I know about that.” His reply read.
I settled on my chair, sinking in. He seemed to have gotten…better.
I arrived a little earlier than planned, the wedding was packed with people from both sides of the family. I could recognize a few but I couldn't recognize most. Nathaniel wasn't anywhere in sight and I managed to get myself into the groom's side. I sighted River from afar and he waved me over.
“I can't believe you actually made it.” River said, a smile on his face.
“I wouldn't miss your wedding. You are finally getting married to the woman you love.” I said, and he nodded enthusiastically before he paused.
“What about you?” He asked, and I froze in place. “Our situation forced the both of you apart back then but it's about time you get back together. Don't you think so?” He asked and a smile rose on my face.
“It's not because of her. It's mainly because he didn't communicate with me.” I said and he nodded but he paused.
“Thank you for coming, but I still feel we owe you two.” He said, and I waved a hand in the air.
“It's nothing. We get along quite well now.” I said and he nodded.
“River, we need you here.” Someone called out from inside the room. He turned back to me… “I'll get going now, try to settle yourself in.” he said and I nodded, waving him goodbye.
I walked forward into the open area and took in a deep breath as the cold wind brushed against my face.
Suddenly, I felt someone tapping my shoulder. I turned and it turned out to be Nathaniel.
A smile rose on my face. “Where have you been?” I asked.
“I was helping him with a few things. Who knew preparing for a wedding was so stressful.” He said.
“You actually helped out?” I asked and he nodded.
“Yes,” he replied. “The wedding is about to start.” He added when music started playing from the main hall.
I followed him back to the hall, and the guest's present was now more than before. Eve soon walked down the aisle, and a smile rose on my face. River said his wedding vows and I could see the smile reaching his eyes when he held her hand. His eyes sparkled throughout the entire event. They were finally married.
I felt a hot breath down my shoulder and I turned to find Nathaniel behind me.
“What are you doing?” I asked, startled. He had disappeared after he led me forward and into our seats, now he was suddenly back.
“I missed you.” He said, and his eyes sparkled when he said that, just like River’s when he looked at his bride. I sighed, turning to fully face him.
“Sorry. I can't continue that toxic relationship with you.” I said and his face dropped, I held his hand.
“But we can start over as friends maybe, then slowly, we build it back up to something even greater than what we had before.” I finished with a smile on my face and he smiled back.
“I think I can do that,” he leaned forward and pressed his lips into mine, I didn't pull back, if anything my lips quivered and a soft whimper broke free. When he pulled away I was panting and flushed. “I can do that, as long as you let me kiss you like this all the time.”
“We'll see about that…” I teased and made a run outta there before he grabbed me again.
