Chapter 106 FOR HIS SAKE.

Chapter 106 FOR HIS SAKE.

Asher

A steady beeping invaded my consciousness, a faint, sterile scent of disinfectant hitting my nose. My eyes fluttered open to an unfamiliar ceiling, the light forced me to close them back.

I turned my head slightly and opened my eyes again, this time, I saw Nathaniel.

His hands slightly extended touching mine, his face rested on his arms with his eyes shut tightly.

I smiled, he looked so peaceful when he was asleep.

Light spilled in from across the room and the sun was reflecting directly on his face. I tried to raise my hand to protect him from the sun but it was difficult.

The anesthesia had obviously not worn off. I sighed, dropping my hand but I managed to startle him.

Nathaniel raised his head to catch my gaze and his eyes widened when he saw me. He stood up to his feet, rushing to my side. “You're awake. Is there something you would like?” He asked.

His tone dripped with compassion, and concern, almost like an entirely different person.

I cleared my throat, and managed to speak. “I'm fine.”

Nathaniel nodded before snapping his head towards the door. “I'll call the doctor,” he said, dashing out before I could say more.

He soon returned with a doctor by his side. The doctor moved forward, checking the signs while I kept my eyes on Nathaniel. At first, he tried to look at me and the surroundings, wanting to understand if anything was wrong but soon his gaze fell, and he picked up his phone.

Nathaniel left the room and my face dropped.. “Are you feeling any discomfort?” The doctor asked.

I parted my lips to speak but paused. I raised my hand and this time it was relatively easier, if it weren't for the needles attached to my hand, it would have felt like usual.

“No. I'm fine.” I said, the doctor scanned my body and turned to the nurse by his side.

“You should stay for the night for observation. You can be discharged tomorrow.” He said, and I nodded.

He left with the nurse by his side and Nathaniel came in almost immediately.

I stared at him, and couldn't find the words to say. I parted my lips to speak but he beat me to it.

“How did you know to come to that place?” He asked, and I raised a brow.

“I got the message from one of your men. You didn't expect me to come in handy did you?” I asked and he frowned, he stepped closer.

“I warned him not to disclose the location. Seems…”

I raised my other hand to make him stop. “I got a message from my side, he didn't need to tell me the location.” I said but he didn't relax, rather his frown deepened.

“You knew how dangerous it was and you still decided to come? What if I wasn't able to handle them?”

“But you were. It's impossible for you not to be able to handle them. Moreover, I had my own plans.” I said, shrugging but Nathaniel didn't seem to want to let it go yet.

“You still managed to get injured so badly even with those plans of yours. What would happen to you if I wasn't there to take you out?” He asked, his tone raising. The image before I passed out flashed before my eyes — Nathaniel. He was right, without him, I would have been destroyed in that fire but without him, I would never go into that fire.

“You had to take me out. I only entered because of you.” I paused, his face relaxed a little.

“I also killed the man you've been trying so hard to find. If it wasn't for me you both would have died in that fire.” I finished and for a moment, he remained silent.

However, he soon spoke up. “It's fine if I die there, but what about you? You have no feud with him, why are you willing to throw your life away?” He asked.

“Then what about you? Should you throw your life away just because you have a feud with him?” I asked, and he paused, his hand hanging in the air.

He dropped his head, his lips parted but he couldn't get any words out. Later, he managed to say.

“You went there because of me right?”

I wanted to nod. After all, I did go there because I was worried something would happen to him but I scoffed instead. “I don't need to report my reason to you.”

Nathaniel stepped closer, standing only inches away from the hospital bed. “I already begged you not to involve yourself in this. It's my problem, let me take care of it myself. Why did you go to that place? Do you know how worried I was when I saw you on that floor?”

I snapped my head towards him, holding his gaze for a few minutes before he shifted back.

“Don't interfere in my matters anymore.” He said, walking away before I could speak.

“Who told you I wanted to interfere with them? You are too full of yourself.” I said, rolling my eyes but he wasn't here to listen to me.

I sunk into my bed, closing my eyes and trying to forget it all. Maybe I was a little too impulsive, but I couldn't let him die. He would have been the one on this bed if I didn't go in, and maybe, his fate would have been worse.

I swallowed hard when I remembered his words. ‘He was only speaking like that because he was worried.’ I tried to convince myself but the last words he said before he left made me squeeze my hands tight.

Would he continue to avoid me?

Later in the evening, the nurse came in and removed the needles. “You are fine now but we'll need you to stay for observation.” She said and I nodded.

She left the room, and I stood up on my feet, going to stand by the window, looking into the moonlight.

I rested my hands on the windowsill, my head tilted up slightly.

Would I still get to see him?
