Chapter 102 WON'T LET GO.
Asher
Dima's eyes widened, his whole body going rigid. “Do you think he…” he trailed off, unsure of whether to finish.
“No. I'm sure he has some feud with them, I'm just not sure what.” I said. Dima nodded, breathing a sigh of relief.
“Okay. I'll work on it.” He said, walking away. I relaxed in my seat, my mind drifting to my mother's words.
How exactly did I get separated from them?
Later in the day, I took a walk in the residence’s garden. Trying to get a breather and piece the pieces together. Irina soon appeared in the far distance and I smiled as I waved her over.
“You left when you met him?” I asked as soon as she got to my side.
She nodded, her eyes scanned my body. “You didn't?” She paused, and a crease formed between her brows. “You didn't go there because of him?”
I nodded.
“That makes a lot of sense.” She paused. “He said he would try to take you out of there, did he succeed?”
I scoffed. “Of course he didn't. I wouldn't leave just because he wanted me to.”
“He didn't know the reason you attended the party, right?” She asked.
“He didn't but he did at the end of the day.”
“If he didn't manage to get you out then you were there when the blast happened. Are you hurt?” She asked, and I shook my head negatively.
“No. I went there prepared.” I said.
Irina nodded, and at that moment, a guard passed by, greeting her before he greeted me. Only then did the realization hit me, Irina had been connected with my family for a while now.
Maybe she knew some inside story. “Do you still know something from your childhood?” I asked.
Irina looked back at me, the wind blowing her hair over her face. She tucked her hair behind her ear before she spoke. “I can still remember a few things, why?”
“Did your parents ever mention how I got separated from the family?” I asked, and her gaze dropped.
I tilted my head slightly, waiting for an answer but when she looked back up at me she shook her head.
“I don't.” She said, “My parents didn't really speak of you much until your family found you. I also didn't hear much from your mother.”
Right. Why would they tell a child about a missing child? but if she didn't know about it, who would?
“Why are you asking?”
“Just curious.” I replied, walking deeper into the garden.
Irina came to a stop, and took her time taking in the scent and staring at them. She cut off a flower and rushed towards me.
“Check this out. It has a peculiar scent.” She said as she came closer but she somehow managed to trip.
I stretched out, holding her steady before she could fall. “Be careful.”
She nodded, standing still. She pointed the flower towards me, I took it from her hands, taking in the scent as I spoke. “Its smell is really peculiar.”
I handed it back to her and massaged my shoulder. The ache had been there since I returned home and it seemed helping Irina had made it intensify. I turned, walking deeper into the garden before her voice interrupted me.
“Did I hurt you?” She asked and I turned back to see her face.
Her lips were pressed into a thin line as her eyes dropped to my shoulder. “It's not you.” I said quickly before she could feel guilty but she rushed to my side.
“You were hurt before?” She asked, her eyes still fixed on my shoulder.
“Just a little injury, I will apply an ointment when I return.” I said, and attempted to leave but she held me back.
“Let me help you with it.” Irina said, dragging me by the arm.
I wanted to stop her but I just followed along, I wouldn't want her feeling guilty.
“I had given this to you mother when she told me of an injury she had.” Irina said as she walked into my room with an ointment in hand. “It works really well.”
She handed it to me, and I smiled. “Thank you.”
I pulled down the side of my clothes to reveal my shoulder, and applied the ointment while she stared at me.
“Did you manage to get the people you went there for?” Irina asked and I shook my head negatively.
“I didn't. They are more tactical than I thought.” I said, the faces when the platform blew up flashed before my eyes. No one would have expected they would use that method.
“Does that mean they would continue to cause havoc? You have to be careful then.” She said, sitting right across from me, her eyes filled with pity.
“It’s only a matter of time before I take them down.” I said, remembering Nathaniel’s words.
If he had really gotten a lead like he said then the Syndicate would soon be destroyed.
I groaned, the pain from my shoulder snapping me back to reality. Irina's eyes widened as she got up to her feet.
“Let me help you with the back.” She said and I nodded.
I handed the ointment to her and she helped apply it but at that moment the door opened.
My mother stood at the door, her eyes almost bulging out of their sockets as she looked between the two of us.
“Is there something you need?” I asked but a smile spread across her face.
“Nothing. Absolutely nothing.” She said, closing the door before she could cackle. I looked up to meet Irina gaze who sighed as soon as she heard the door close.
“She's probably thinking we are getting along well.” Irina said, closing the bottle that contained the ointment. “Won't you tell her that you are not ready to let him go yet?”
Irina's words brought Nathaniel back to my mind. I still couldn't get over him but he seemed to have gotten over me.
I sighed. “Why bother?”
