Chapter 100 DO YOU WANT TO DIE?
Asher
The whole room freezes. All heads turned towards the platform, and I could hear my heart skip a beat.
The fate was already sealed. Even with his bodyguards at the corner of the stage, and the men I had seen earlier rushing towards the platform, it was still obvious there was no saving this.
Fire filled the room, each piece of lining used to decorate the hall already bursting out in flames.
The fire burned furiously, engulfing the stage and the several men that were on it. Gregori has fallen to the floor, his back possibly scared by the fire but he rose to his feet.
Chaos broke out in the room, everyone scrambled to safety but the flames still managed to engulf some of them.
My eyes widened as I looked towards Nathaniel. I could see him mutter a word under his breath before he grabbed my hand and dragged me.
"Wait." I tried to protest, remembering the people still in the room but he didn't seem to want to hear my opinion in the first place.
After great effort, I managed to pull him to a stop.
"What is up now?" Nathaniel turned to me, his dark eyes burning holes through me. "I already told you this place was dangerous but you insisted on staying. Now you are still reluctant to leave, do you want to die?!"
He screamed, his voice rang in my ears almost engulfing the screams of pain in the room.
I took a deep breath before I spoke. "There are still people in there." I said, and then I remembered her. She was only here because of me, if I had told Gregori of my plan he would have never let her come. I couldn't let her die because of me.
"Irina is still in there." I said, turning back quickly but Nathaniel's grip was hard on my hand, not letting me move.
"I already got her out. I told her to leave the moment you left her side." He said.
A crease formed between my brows. "Did you see her leave?" I asked and he hung his head low before speaking.
"Yes. I told my men to take her out. Can we leave now?" He asked and I nodded. He turned and dragged me forward but at that moment, fire flashed right before us.
My eyes widened as I tried to pull him back with all I heard. My heart hammered hard against my chest.
Nathaniel managed to move in time and avoided it. "Are you okay?"
I asked, he nodded, looking for another part and guiding us out of the place. I rested my hands on my knees, trying to catch my breath. Nathaniel passed me a bottle of water.
"Are you fine? Did you get hurt?"
I shook my head negatively, taking a sip of water. I parted my lips to speak. "How did you know that would happen?"
He scoffed, and the rage he had before seemed to have returned. "It's the Syndicate. They are always ruthless in their actions." Nathaniel stepped closer, covering the space between us.
"Why did you insist so much on staying? I can't believe you only stayed because of that announcement." He said, his gaze hard on me.
I blinked, lowering my head to avoid his gaze. "Believe whatever you want to."
Nathaniel fell silent for a while and I raised my head up, wanting to speak but he didn't let me. "You knew about it." He said, his eyes widened in realization.
I lowered my head, trying to avoid speaking but he held me by the shoulder, forcing my head up.
"You did and you still went there. Do you really think they would use the same method each time?" Nathaniel asked, his voice almost breaking from how loud he pitched it.
I looked up to catch his gaze and I could see the worry in his eyes but I wasn't the same person from months ago. I sighed.
"I miscalculated a bit. Yes but that doesn't mean I didn't have a plan. You can't keep talking to me like a kid that is acting on impulse." I said and his voice dropped low.
"Do you know how dangerous that situation was?" He asked.
"I do and I would have handled it with or without you there." I said, pausing for a bit. Nathaniel stood there in silence, a look of realization spreading across his face.
"What did you get from that ink seller and how did you know to come here?" I asked, but he did not answer.
I tapped his shoulder. "You promised to tell me about it."
Nathaniel looked up to me but the look of understanding he had before had now faded. His face was now unreadable. "I still won't let you take part in this. It's too dangerous."
My eyes widened. I had expected him to be excluded sooner or later but I didn't think it would be for this reason. "I can protect myself. We already have an arrangement."
Nathaniel's expression didn't change, like he didn't hear the words I had just said. "I'll have to breach our agreement."
I parted my lips to speak, wanting to convince him otherwise but I knew he wouldn't change his mind. I scoffed, it was my fault for trusting him.
"Fine. I'll investigate it myself." I said, trying to leave but he held me back.
I paused, my back faced him. His voice dropped even lower, like a quiet plea he spoke. "Please don't."
I turned back to catch his gaze, his expression still remained the same but I could see that his gaze had lowered slightly.
"Tell me what you discovered and I won't investigate further." I said, tilting my head slightly.
Nathaniel raised his head up quickly, parting his lips to speak but he shut it tight. He actually hesitated, he pulled his hand away from mine, his gaze lowering.
I stared at him, staying a little longer. Maybe he would reveal some little information but he didn't, he only stayed quiet.
"You shouldn't know about this." He said finally and I nodded, a little smile rising on my face before I left and this time, he didn't stop me.
