Chapter 91 - THE RUSTLE OF THE LEAVES
Time seems to stand still as I hold my breath, my muscles taut as bowstrings ready to be released. The space inside the chest becomes oppressive, the air heavy and charged with anxiety. I close my eyes tightly, praying the intruder doesn't discover my hiding place, but each passing second feels like an eternity.
I clench the gun in my hands along with the rope, feeling its cold metal against my skin, and keep it pointed upwards, ready to fire mercilessly as soon as someone opens the lid of the chest. My heartbeat echoes in my ears with overpowering force, a deafening echo of my own anguish as I wait, silently praying that no one dares to open that lid.
Every step closer to me is like a hammer striking my heart, filling me with paralyzing terror. Please, no, please... The words repeat like a mantra in my mind, a desperate plea to the universe to grant me a respite, a pause in this endless nightmare.
The air becomes thick as if charged with the very electricity of anticipation. Each breath feels heavy in my lungs as I hold my breath, ready to face whatever is on the other side of that lid. My hands tremble slightly, adrenaline pumping through my veins with overwhelming intensity. I close my eyes for a moment, trying to control the frantic pounding of my heart, but to no avail. The tense silence around me is deafening, filled with an overwhelming pressure that seems to crush me to the ground.
Hurried footsteps echo incessantly, like the echo of an ominous drum echoing in the darkness of the room. Each sound seems closer than the last, each furious growl cutting through the air with palpable ferocity. The certainty that they will find me is an unbearable weight hanging over my shoulders, threatening to crush me under its relentless burden. The darkness closes in around me, enveloping me in its cold and merciless embrace, and I know I cannot allow myself to be found. My life hangs by a thread, and I must fight with all my might to keep it intact.
“Look for her in the woods! She can't have gone far!” shouts Frank's voice, echoing like thunder in the room. My muscles tense with every word, my mind running at full speed as it processes the urgent order. “Yuck the smell of gunpowder,” Frank adds in disgust, as the footsteps move away, marking the beginning of a small lull in my battle for survival. With a restrained sigh of relief, I hear the door close, leaving me in a tense, uncertainty-laden silence.
“Are they gone?” I whisper to myself once I no longer hear any sound, my heart pounding in my chest. My heart is still pounding, the sound of my own breathing filling my ears as I stay alert, waiting for any hint of danger. The room is plunged into an ominous silence, interrupted only by the distant echo of footsteps walking away and the rustle of the wind creeping through some crack in the trapdoor.
Carefully, I release a shaky sigh, feeling the tension begin to ease slightly in my muscles. But I know I can't afford to relax too much. The threat is still present, waiting in the shadows to lurk at any moment. I open the lid of the chest while keeping my gun pointed forward, but there is no one in sight. I try to get out of the chest cautiously, moving stealthily while observing my surroundings carefully. I walk to the door and open it slowly, peeking out cautiously, but there is no sign of human presence either. This is my chance.
I run up the stairs, feeling the urgency pulsing in my veins. Reaching the trapdoor, I try to open it, but it's too heavy and the weapons I'm holding in my hands don't help me at all. I don't want to leave them behind, they might be my only defense later on. Then, a quick idea forms in my mind.
I lift up my dress and take the rope, wrapping it around my leg and securing the weapon in place, as if it were a sort of makeshift garter belt. Once I make sure it is securely fastened and hidden under the layers of fabric, I lower the dress to leave it hidden from view.
With determination, I advance towards the door and with both hands unoccupied, I push with all my might. The door yields to my push, creaking and resistant at first, but finally opens wide enough for me to slip through the opening. With my heart pounding in my chest, I step into the darkness of the hallway, ready to face whatever fate has in store for me.
I slowly peek out and make sure I am alone, cautiously observing my surroundings. The first thing that captures my attention is a door that appears to be the exit from this oppressive place. Carefully, I examine my surroundings some more before venturing outside.
I find myself in a log cabin, somewhat small and cozy, but with an air of abandonment reflected in its old furniture and worn walls. The creaky wooden floor beneath my feet seems to tell stories of years of loneliness and desolation.
The trapdoor from which I peek out is in the small living room, which has a modest fireplace burning unprotected. The fire crackles with comforting warmth compared to the cold in the basement, dimly illuminating the room and casting dancing shadows on the cracked walls.
The atmosphere is permeated with the smoky scent of burning wood, mixed with the cool air from outside seeping through the cracks in the cabin. Outside, I can hear the soft rustle of leaves stirring in the breeze, a constant reminder of the freedom that awaits me beyond these oppressive walls.
It's time to get out of here. I open the trap door all the way until I feel completely out of the basement. I run for the door that may be my only way out, but just as I'm about to grab the knob, a whirring sound passes too close to my ear and a bullet impacts the door, leaving a hole in the wood. At the same time, a chilling voice sounds behind me, echoing above the persistent ringing in my ear.
“Where do you think you're going, you damned human?” The voice, filled with hatred and contempt, envelops the cold air of the cabin, chilling my bones and sending shivers down my spine.
