Chapter 90 - URGENCY OF FREEDOM
With one last effort, I manage to undo the last knot imprisoning my hands. A sigh of relief escapes my lips, but the lingering pain in my wrists reminds me of the urgency of my situation. I look at my reddened and scarred hands, the grooves left by the ropes are silent witnesses of my struggle for freedom. I can't afford to rest, I still have to free my feet before my captors return.
With hurried movements, I concentrate on untying the ropes that imprison my ankles. Fortunately, it is easier than with my wrists, but every second counts. Each tug on the rope sends a twinge of pain down my legs, but I ignore it, driven by the urgency of freedom.
I get up in a hurry, stumbling over my own momentum, barely avoiding a disastrous fall thanks to my legs numb from hours of immobility. I braced my mind for whatever might come, ignoring the tingling that spread through my limbs. I was ready to face any challenge, determined to fight with all my might for my freedom.
I ignore the pool of blood that stains the floor and head for the door, thankful that it isn't locked at that moment; before I left I grabbed the rope I had just removed from my wrists, in case it would be of help later. I guess they never considered the possibility of me trying to escape from that dreary room. I turned the knob and stepped out, my eyes protesting at the sudden change of light that hit me immediately. I was taken aback by the vast hallway that unfolded before me, without a single window in sight. I moved forward as fast as my aching legs would allow, feeling the coldness of the cement under my feet, similar to that of the room I had just left behind. I noticed that at the end of the hallway, there were stairs ascending to somewhere. Did that mean I was in some kind of subway structure? A basement, perhaps?
I hurry toward the stairs, and as I get close enough, I notice that they are made of wood. Isn't that strange? As I reach the top of the stairs, I come across some sort of trapdoor that seems to open upwards. I have no time to waste; I need to get out of here before they come back. However, next to the stairs, I spot a door very similar to the one in the room where I was being held until a few moments ago. Is someone else being held here? Should I peek in to find out? Doubts grip me as I struggle with the urge to explore or continue my escape.
My thoughts are churning in a whirlwind of uncertainty. What can I do if there really is someone else locked in here? I can barely move and my safety is still not guaranteed. What if I find him? Will I move on, ignore him and continue on my way?
I can't ignore the possibility that there is someone else going through the same horror as me. But if I really want to do this, I must hurry, or none of us will ever see sunlight again. Determined, I open the door and am met with something totally different from what I expected. “What the hell is this!” The room is much more spacious than the one that held me hostage. Not only that, there is a big change of atmosphere here, so to speak. The room expands before my eyes, much larger than I expected. The light, though artificial, illuminates every corner, casting shadows that dance on the walls. The meticulously aligned shelves hold an impressive collection of weapons of all kinds, from rifles to razor-sharp knives. The metallic sheen of the weapons reflects off the light, creating glints that pierce the gloom.
The metal chests, arranged in neat rows, seem to hold dark secrets inside. Their locks gleam with a menacing gleam, like silent guardians of forbidden treasure. Sturdy, well-built black metal tables proudly display their contents: firearms meticulously lined up next to piles of ammunition.
The air is permeated with the pungent smell of gunpowder and metal, a scent that reminds me of a sense of latent danger. Every corner of the room seems to whisper secrets and conspiracies, creating an atmosphere of intrigue and palpable tension. This is not simply a room, it is a sanctuary of weapons, a bastion of power and dominance. This is definitely not a kidnapping room!
“But what the hell is this doing here, did he mean this by ‘merchandise’?” My words hang in the air, drowned out by the metallic creak of the door opening, revealing the entrance of unknown persons. My senses instantly sharpen, every muscle in my body tense like a spring ready to spring.
The sound of voices, distant but menacing, seeps into the room, enveloping me in a blanket of fear and urgency. My eyes frantically scan the space around me, desperately searching for a place to hide, to go unnoticed among the lurking shadows.
The room, illuminated by the cold, artificial light, seems to shrink around me, every corner and every piece of furniture become possible hiding places, but none seem safe enough. There is only one option: the metal chests lined up at the end of the room, like silent guardians of a dark secret.
With my heart pounding wildly in my chest, I rush toward the farthest chest, feeling the weight of uncertainty and danger crushing my shoulders.
If they come here, I am lost, but I must at least try. I grab one of the smaller firearms on a table and run to the chest. It has no lock on it, so I just go inside and lock it with me inside, thankful that my body isn't so big that I can't fit in such a small space.
Just as I close the lid of the chest on me, I hear the door to the room bang open, followed by hurried footsteps and a cursing voice. The sound of boots hitting the floor echoes through the room, each step closer than the last. The tension in the air is palpable, an atmosphere charged with danger and urgency.
“Where is that human?!” The voice, full of anger and frustration, cuts through the silence like a whip. I can feel my heart pounding wildly in my chest, the echo of my own heartbeat mingling with the sound of my gasping breath.
