Chapter 106 - YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE
We arrived quickly at the herd, my mother driving as if we were in a battle against time itself, like something out of an action movie. However, the pain prevented me from reprimanding her; it lingered in my body and the feeling of weakness from the loss of blood made me dizzy. As soon as we arrived, the car skidded and Genrant had to hold on as best he could to the seat while holding me firmly so I wouldn't move. He gently got me out of the car and carried me to the entrance of the mansion, holding me tightly to maintain my stability while trying not to let myself get dizzy.
When we arrived, Tristan, completely naked and with fresh blood still clinging to his body, trotted towards us. He was leading several members of the herd who seemed busy going back and forth.
"Alpha! The stragglers were completely eradicated and their bodies are being transported by the others-" Tristan is interrupted in his words immediately by Genrant.
"Not now, Tristan, I don't want anyone to disturb me," Genrant says firmly.
Tristan stops abruptly, his expression of urgency contrasting with Genrant's command. For a moment, he seems undecided about what to do next, but finally nods and joins the other members of the pack, though his gaze remains fixed on us, as if ready to intervene if necessary.
Genrant runs with me in his arms, leaving Tristan behind, and we head inside the mansion, drawing the attention of all the rest of the pack, who look at us worriedly. We head for the infirmary, and despite that room being far from the entrance of the mansion, in a few seconds we find ourselves entering it.
"Mother-in-law, you'd better stay outside," Genrant says to my mother as he carefully deposits me on one of the gurneys. I feel so weak that the artificial white light irritates my eyes.
"No! I want to be present too, she's my little girl!" my mother rushes to my side.
"Rebecca," the doctor calls to my mother, but she ignores. "You'd better wait outside, for your sake. You still can't control your hunger and...your daughter...is bleeding to death."
"I can control myself! I want to be near her!" my mother yells desperately to Genrant.
"Rebecca! Do you think we didn't notice your stare in the car? Your way of holding back your murderous impulse by biting your tongue?" the doctor speaks seriously, his tone I've never heard it like that before. "You know I'll support you in anything, but this time you must understand what's best for you."
"Mom, please..." I can barely speak because of the pain. My mother looks at me with tears running down her cheeks. I don't like to see her like this, but right now I can't do anything.
"When you get better, I promise to be waiting for you with some nice potato soup," my mother, despite her tears, replies with a smile and deposits a kiss on my forehead before leaving the room, closing the door behind her.
The doctor waits a few seconds before he begins to speak, as if waiting for my mom to be far enough away.
"I didn't want to say this in front of her," the doctor begins to say, turning to Genrant, "but her health condition is delicate, Genrant. You're going to have to choose, Livy's life or your baby's." The doctor's tone is somber, and his words fall like a weight on the room.
Genrant grabs the doctor by his shirt collar and stamps him against the nearest wall, his face twitching with fear and despair. "What are you talking about, why would I have to choose?"
"We can't save both of our lives," the doctor insists, struggling to breathe under Genrant's pressure.
"I'm not going to lose her again!" the Genrant's voice cracks with anguish, his gaze searching mine in desperation.
"She's lost too much blood. If you don't choose, you'll both die," the doctor tries to explain urgently, but the desolation in his voice is evident.
Genrant looks at me, and in his eyes I see reflected the deepest fear I have ever witnessed in him. His face pales even more, as if all hope suddenly vanishes.
"Is there no other choice?" Genrant's voice sounds in an almost inaudible whisper, as if he can barely articulate the words.
"We could try a blood transfusion, but it's still risky. Besides, the only compatible blood is her mother's, and since the transfusion with the vampire blood she is no longer compatible. We could also subject her to the same treatment I gave her mother, but..."
"Never! I won't let you put your blood in her!" interrupts Genrant in annoyance, his face contorted with fury and fear.
"Anyway, I can't promise you that I'll save the baby's life with that procedure. It's still too premature, the fetus is not fully formed, and it could cause problems for you. The antibodies in the vampire blood could destroy it," the doctor explains.
"What about my blood?" asks Genrant, with a mixture of despair and determination in his eyes.
"Your blood? Are you aware of the amount of blood we will need? Besides, we don't have time for experiments, we can't risk relying on luck," warns the doctor, his tone of voice serious and concerned.
"If necessary, it doesn't matter how much blood you need from me. Take it all," Genrant replies with determination. "You know my Alpha blood is more regenerative than any other werewolf's."
"We could try, but it will still be a risk. We don't know the results of the procedure, they won't be the same as with Livy's mother," the doctor warns, pointing out the possible dangers.
"It doesn't matter. If I have to choose, I choose her, without hesitation," Genrant states firmly, his gaze fixed on me, but with an expression full of love and concern. Is he willing to sacrifice the baby's life to save me? The thought fills me with anguish.
"No, don't even think about it, Genrant," I exclaim vehemently, shaking my head. "I will not put my life above the baby's," I resolutely reaffirm. I simply can't do it. As unexpected as it is, he's still a part of me, my baby, my puppy.
"Livy, he's not even fully formed," Genrant insists, trying to make me understand the gravity of the situation.
"I don't care! I won't be able to live with the idea that, because of me..." My words are cut short by the pain and anguish I feel.
"Livy!" his call is urgent, but I don't stop.
"No, Genrant," I interrupt him firmly.
"If it's necessary to pick a culprit, you can blame me. I'll take all the blame. Hate me all you want, but please don't leave me," his voice sounds heartbreaking, as if every word is hurting him. "I don't want to lose you."
"You have to make a decision fast!" the doctor insists with an urgent tone, as I feel my mind begin to cloud despite my struggle to maintain consciousness.
I bring my free hand delicately to Genrant's face and tenderly caress him on the cheek. "Genrant, I could never blame you. Not after all we've been through together," I assure with determination, feeling love and gratitude wash over me. "I love you, Genrant."
Genrant's eyes begin to fill with tears that he struggles to hold back. "Do what you have to do," my voice is soft but firm, trying to convey reassurance to him despite the heartbreaking situation.
"I love you too, my bunny," Genrant whispers in a broken voice, and her words feel comforting in the midst of all that is going on.
It's the last thing I hear before I slowly fall into the darkness that surrounds me, like a cold, familiar embrace. I have only one last thought before I disappear completely into the darkness: will I ever wake up again to see those golden eyes, full of love?
