Chapter 51 Warning
Seeing Nami laugh involuntarily captivated George and Ethan. They realized that Nami was incredibly beautiful. Her innocent personality and insane strength often made people overlook her appearance.
Realizing that she was the only one laughing while everyone else was silent made them stop laughing immediately. Furthermore, Ethan's sudden, serious gaze made them realize they were laughing alone.
"S-sorry, I was laughing by myself," she said with an awkward smile.
"Never mind, I'm going!" George said, still embarrassed as he walked away. He tried to hide his blushing face and the embarrassment he was trying to suppress.
While he could hide it from everyone else, he couldn't hide it from Ethan, who could easily read his thoughts.
Realizing that there was nothing more to talk about here, Ethan decided to leave the room as well, remembering that it would soon be lunchtime, and after that they would have to continue their training.
Seeing Ethan leave, Nami considered following him, considering they were in the same class, but Viviene and Dayana still wanted to chat with him a little longer.
"Ethan, wait for me...!" She said, taking a step after him. But Viviene immediately grabbed her hand and stopped her from leaving.
"Nami, wait...! How about we have lunch together?" Viviene asked, and Dayana nodded in agreement. They thought they could quickly bond, considering they were in the same group and were being specially trained to become top Yeagers.
"B-but usually I eat with my friends."
"Who? Ethan?"
"Sydney White and Lea Hamilton."
"Sydney White?"
Hearing Sydney's name, Dayana and Viviene looked at each other as if contemplating the same thing. They had seen Nami with Sydney and Lea before. But neither of them expected Nami to be quite close to Sydney.
"Are you close to Sydney?"
"Yes, I share the same room with them."
"Hmm...is that so? Did you know Ethan and Sydney were half-siblings?"
"Yes, I know. Sydney already told me. Sydney's father married Ethan's mother."
"How much did you know?"
"Just that much, what's wrong?"
"You also knew that Sydney was an esper, right?"
"Yes, I knew that too. Sydney can make her body transparent and invisible."
"I just wanted to tell you that you should be careful with her, she's a dangerous person."
"Dangerous? You mean Sydney?"
"Yes, Sydney White. She's a dangerous person, you should be careful with her!"
"I don't think that's true! Sydney is a good friend, I think you're misunderstanding."
"We've known her since she was five, when espers were gathered at the ERI lab. Every six months we'd meet for three to seven days. So, you could say we've known her for quite some time."
"Do espers definitely know each other?"
"It all depends on which city you live in. ERI has laboratories in every district and every city. They're all used to monitor the condition and movements of espers. We have special privileges, and all our living expenses, healthcare, and education are covered by ERI. Since Dayana, Sydney, and I live in the same city, we go to the same laboratory."
"I-is that so?"
"Whether you believe it or not, we're just asking you to be careful of her. She's not as good as you think!"
Although she didn't want to be influenced, their words made her a little emotional. She was sure Sydney was a good friend, though not everyone might understand her kindness.
"Okay I see, see you later?" She said, walking away.
"Think about what we said! This is for your own good...!" Dayana exclaimed, waving her hand.
Nami walked quickly toward the exit. At the end of the corridor, she saw Ethan standing alone as if waiting for someone.
"What took you so long?"
"Y-you waiting for me?"
"You were the one who asked me to wait?"
"Y-yeah, that's right, but-"
"What did they say?"
"W-who?"
"Those two girls, Viviene and Dayana. What did they say?" Ethan asked coldly. His eyes were sharp, as if he were observing something.
Nami knew it was impossible to lie to someone who could read her mind. But she also couldn't tell Ethan that they had just been talking about Sydney.
"Th-they just wanted to know who I was sharing a room with. I told them I was sharing a room with Lea and Sydney." I stuttered. She wasn't good at hiding things.
Ethan looked at her with increasingly cold eyes. Nami shuddered, feeling as if her mind was being stripped bare.
"It's your choice whether to believe what they said or not. I won't defend Sydney as fanatically as you think. She has her life, and I have mine," he said. Just as expected, Ethan could read her thoughts.
"I-I trust Sydney! I believe she's a good person and a loyal friend, so I'll trust her forever."
Ethan paused for a moment and chose not to respond immediately to Nami's words. He could only sense a hint of worry.
"You get betrayed often, huh?"
"W-what?"
"I understand, okay, let's go!"
"Where are we going?"
"Don't you want lunch? Didn't you notice your stomach growling?"
Hearing Ethan's words made her realize she was so hungry that her stomach was growling. She was impressed that Ethan was so sensitive to her stomach's condition.
"Ahahaha...you're right, I'm really hungry! Let's eat...!"
