Chapter 36 The Mind Reader
Nami began to feel that unpleasant feeling again, the feeling that she wouldn't be accepted anywhere or by anyone after people began to find out who she was.
She always tried to be accepted, but in the end, she would be kicked away and left alone. But Levi was the only person who never left her. Therefore, she wasn't ready to be away from him for too long.
"It seems you've become too emotionally dependent on the Professor, huh?" Ethan could read her thoughts easily. Nami began to feel uneasy around Ethan. They had only just met, but she felt that Ethan understood her more than she had expected.
"Besides being able to read minds, it seems you can read other people's feelings too, huh? A truly remarkable ability. I admire you."
"I just have a high level of sensitivity, feelings and thoughts are naturally indiscernible to each other. But I can hear what even the small animals and plants in this garden are thinking and feeling."
"Really?" Nami immediately glared, as if in disbelief at Ethan's confession. Can you hear the feelings and thoughts of animals and plants? What kind of crazy person from the planet could do that?
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Ethan shot her a sarcastic look, as if annoyed by Nami's overreaction.
"No, I just think it's amazing. I mean your ability. With that ability, I think you could rule the world by giving directions and commands to animals to obey your will."
"I can't communicate with them, I only know what they're thinking and feeling. They can't understand what I say. It's just thought language."
"Is that so? I thought you could talk to animals and plants. That would be really cool if you could—"
"Nami?"
Nami heard Sydney's voice from behind her. She immediately turned and saw Sydney standing a few steps behind her.
"Sydney?" Seeing Sydney, Nami wondered if Sydney had come here on purpose.
Sydney realized that Nami and Ethan were alone in the park, making her feel uneasy. She didn't expect Nami to seem content with Ethan, even though she knew Ethan didn't like to talk to people he wasn't close to.
"I was looking for you," she said. But her eyes were fixed on Ethan, who looked calm and relaxed.
"You were looking for me? What about Lea? Is she still mad at me?"
"Lea was in the bedroom, she asked me to go to sleep, and I had to pretend to be asleep. When she was off guard, I went out to look for you."
"Syd, I'm really sorry for what happened. I should have been able to control myself. Now I really don't know what to do. Lea's mad at me, and it seems like everyone will hate me, so I—"
"Lea's not really mad at you, she's just too scared. Lea's very smart, so she must have understood that you weren't the one who started the fight, but Prince Jacob. You were only trying to defend yourself."
"But I still put you all in danger, so I—"
"You were trying to protect us, I know. Nami, I saw everything. I saw how you tried to block and destroy the flying objects that nearly hit us. You're so strong, thank you, Nami." Sydney smiled sadly. Her smile and her words, so sincere, moved Nami. Her eyes welled with tears. She rarely heard such kind and sincere words from anyone, so she couldn't contain her feelings.
"I have to go!" Ethan said as he left, having not said anything when Sydney arrived.
"Ethan, have you had dinner?" Realizing Ethan was about to leave, Sydney immediately spoke to him. Strangely, Sydney seemed different when talking to Ethan, as if she felt shy and awkward.
"I'll eat later," Ethan replied coldly without even looking up. He immediately left, leaving the two young girls unable to understand his train of thought.
Nami glanced at Sydney, who seemed disappointed by Ethan's cold demeanor. Although she already knew that Sydney liked Ethan, her half-brother, Ethan's cold and indifferent attitude seemed to be causing Sydney trouble.
"Syd, are you okay?"
"Y-yes Nami, I'm fine!" She said with a forced smile.
"You really like him, huh?"
"Is it obvious?"
"A little."
"I always try to act normal and casual with Ethan. But somehow, I always feel nervous. Even though I've gathered the courage to talk to him, the moment he's in front of me, my courage immediately disappears, and in the end, I don't say anything."
"Sydney?"
"We lived in the same house until we graduated from high school. But we rarely talked, so everyone thought we weren't close or that we were indifferent to each other."
"Maybe it's because Ethan can read your mind, that's why he doesn't know what to say."
"Is that so? But maybe it's true. Maybe Ethan doesn't like me because he already knows what I'm thinking. Maybe I'm not a good girl to him, and—"
"I don't think so! Maybe he's nervous too, and just like you, he doesn't know what to say."
