Chapter 781: Something Happened
Chapter 781: Something Happened
Margaret's eyes narrowed. Something must have happened to Kevin.
"He hasn't come to the office these past two days. Have you seen him?" Margaret asked quietly, but Electra just shook her head.
"It's like he vanished into thin air. Nobody's seen him at any of the places he usually eats."
Hearing that, Margaret knew something was seriously wrong.
At least the company hadn't run into any trouble these past few days. Otherwise, she'd have a mountain of problems on her hands.
Margaret opened her chat history with Kevin. The last message was from two days ago — Kevin reporting on work matters.
Margaret frowned. She took Electra with her and headed straight to Kevin's place.
"You don't think something happened to him, do you?" Electra asked on the way. Even she could tell something was off. Margaret didn't know what to say.
"He hadn't been sending me work updates either. I figured he was just busy. I never thought something might actually be wrong."
Margaret gritted her teeth. She just hoped Kevin was okay.
He was the company's director. If something happened to him, the company would take a hit no matter what. And on top of that, Margaret could see that Electra had been slowly starting to forgive him.
Soon, the car pulled up outside Kevin's building. The two of them rushed upstairs, and Margaret knocked hard on his door again and again.
But no matter how long they rang the doorbell, no one came to answer.
Electra's heart started to race. Her eyes went a little red. "What do we do, Margaret? Do you think something really happened to him?"
"It's okay, it's okay." Margaret tried to calm Electra down while feeling around near the door for a spare key.
They found one under the doormat. Margaret quickly unlocked the door.
The moment they stepped inside, a strong smell of alcohol hit them.
They both frowned instinctively. Empty bottles were scattered all over the place. They stepped around them and searched every corner of the apartment, but Kevin was nowhere to be found.
"Looks like he's not here either..." Margaret frowned. They had no way of reaching Kevin anywhere.
With no other options, they headed back to the office.
The moment they arrived, several employees came rushing over.
"What happened?"
Margaret's gut told her something had gone wrong at the company.
"Margaret, something happened to Kevin!"
"Where is he?"
Electra and Margaret asked at almost the same time. The employee paused for a second, then handed Margaret their phone, showing a trending topic on social media.
The headline read: "Starlight Entertainment Director Kevin Suspected of Drug Use."
"That's impossible." Electra muttered through gritted teeth. "We just saw him a few days ago. He was so full of energy. There's no way he's on drugs!"
The other employees all said they didn't believe it either, but Margaret stayed quiet.
"Everyone calm down." She tried to settle the mood. Nobody wanted anything bad to happen to Kevin.
She went back to her office, opened up social media, and started reading through the story carefully.
"Recently, police arrested a group of drug traffickers. Kevin, director of Starlight Entertainment, was found on the client list. Police have launched an investigation."
Margaret's heart gave a jolt.
Electra had seen the news too. With Kevin in trouble, she couldn't focus on work at all. She grabbed her phone and rushed into Margaret's office.
"Margaret, did you see what they're saying online? There's no way Kevin is that kind of person..."
Margaret shook her head. "There's no solid evidence yet. We just saw him the other day looking perfectly fine. He really didn't seem like someone who'd be using drugs."
"Didn't seem like it? He would never do something like that!"
The usually quiet and reserved Electra was suddenly fierce, completely convinced that Kevin had been wrongly accused.
"Try not to get too worked up. Nothing's been confirmed yet."
With that, Margaret picked up her phone and tried calling Kevin several times.
But it was the same result every time. The phone rang and rang, and no one picked up.
Margaret's expression darkened. She shook her head and forced herself to stay calm.
They couldn't reach Kevin right now, and she couldn't afford to fall apart. If she did, the company would be in an even worse position.
"Here's what we'll do. I'll have someone keep watch outside Kevin's place. The moment we hear anything, I'll let you know right away."
Margaret tried to put Electra's mind at ease. Electra nodded. For now, all she could do was go along with Margaret's plan.
"I'll put out an official statement addressing this. The name Starlight Entertainment is right there in the headline. This affects the company's reputation. We can't let ourselves fall apart."
"Got it." Electra nodded, then went back to her desk.
But with everything going on with Kevin, she couldn't focus at all. She spent the whole time worrying about whether he was okay.
She took a deep breath. Then, an even bigger story broke online.
Margaret saw the trending headline: "Kevin's Drug Use Confirmed." Her heart suddenly started pounding.
"What's going on..."
She clicked on it and found that someone had leaked a video of Kevin using drugs.
She pressed play. The surroundings were dark. Then a man came into frame — Kevin.
He was holding a small pipe. He exhaled slowly, and a ring of smoke curled out and drifted through the air.
That kind of smoke didn't come from regular tobacco.
Margaret's hand trembled slightly. She couldn't believe people online had actually dug up a video like this.
She frowned and clicked on the account that posted it.
There weren't many posts, but they gave away a lot about who the person was.
Margaret pulled up one of the photos at random and ran a search online. It didn't take long to find the company where the person worked.
Margaret's eyes narrowed. She immediately arranged a car, brought a few security guards, and drove over to that company.
Fortunately, Margaret knew the owner well enough. She walked in with the account information and asked a few questions. It didn't take long to track down the person who had posted the leak.
It turned out to be a low-level employee — someone who sat at the front desk all day with nothing to do, always the first to jump on any piece of gossip, collecting a base salary every month without contributing much of anything.
"You're the one who posted this?"
Margaret walked up to her with the account information. The employee looked completely caught off guard. She never expected anyone to actually come looking for her.
"You're..."
"I'm Margaret."
Margaret introduced herself. The woman looked at her and instinctively tried to run, but the security guards grabbed her and pulled her back.
"What — what are you doing?!"
