Chapter 13

Aubrey:

After Alexis had left my room this morning, I saw another side of my mother.

"I just think it's a little weird that she spent the night in your bed, with her arms wrapped around you. Is there something you want to share with me Aubrey?" My mother questioned angrily, tilting her head to the side as she folded her arms together. "Of course not, mom. Alexis and I have just become good friends. After all, she's the only female in this city I can relate to. Since you've taken me away from my friends..." I trailed off, getting upset at the thought of having to make new friends.

"Mum. I don't like the thought of you two sleeping in a bed together. Especially with the lifestyle she lives." My mother spat. I shot her a disgusted glare. "The lifestyle she lives? What's that supposed to mean, mother?" I asked, hopping out of bed. "She's a lesbian. I'm sure you know that, since you've grown so close." She chuckled, sarcastically. "Her life choices don't influence mine. And that's a pretty harsh judgment. Alexis is about to become your step daughter. My sister." I threw at her.

"Well, it's a good thing I'm marrying Hank and not her, right?" She stated. I stayed silent. "Since we're having a discussion like this, I don't want you that close to her anymore, Aubrey. You have a license. I'll get you your own car this afternoon and Hank says there's an empty guest room at the end of the hall. It has a private bathroom, I'll get it painted and have your stuff moved this morning. You can sleep in it tonight." My mother told me, before slamming my door closed behind her.

All day, I kept thinking about what my mother had said to me this morning. How could she be so cruel and judgmental? She certainly didn't act like that towards me when we lived in Vermont.

The bell had finally rang, signaling it was time for lunch. Instead of waiting for Alex outside of her fourth period class, I headed straight to the office to find my mother. She was signing me out for the rest of the day.

We spent the next two hours at the nail salon, where she treated me to a mani/pedi and an eyebrow wax. She also picked us up chicken gyros for the drive to the car dealership. My mother and I said nothing to each other as we headed towards the car dealership.

"Do you like this one?" She asked, pointing to a yellow Jeep. Yellow? Ugh. I thought to myself. I shook my head no. I refused to speak a word to this woman until we got back home. "Look, Aubrey. You may be upset with me now, but you'll understand in a few years once you're an adult." She stated, sternly. We found a car dealer and he gave us a tour of the other cars.

My mother left me alone to wait for the finishing touches of my brand new car. It was a white 2016 Lexis IS. My mother must have thought buying me this would suppress my anger towards her but all in all, I knew the truth behind her purchasing this car for me. She was intentionally trying to create a distance between Alexis and I. This wasn't going to work. I texted Alexis and told her to meet me at the mall.

Four hours later, I sat in the parking lot of the mall. It was dark now and surprisingly, the malls parking lot was empty. Alexis had caught a ride with Jay to the mall, so she met me in the lot at my car.

"Wow. This is pretty nice. Your mom get this for you?" Alexis commented in awe, hopping in the front seat. "Yeah," I giggled at her reaction. "I didn't even know you could drive." She joked. I hit her arm playfully. "Oh, hush." I said, turning on the air conditioning and tuning the radio. Since it was late at night, nothing but slow jams came across the speakers.

Alexis and I talked about everything. Life, sex, aliens, religions, the world, and anything else we could possibly think of.

"I want to apologize for acting so distant earlier. My mom sort of bugged out on me after you left my room this morning. She doesn't want me so close to you anymore. She's even putting me in some guest room at the end of the hall." I confessed. Alexis covered her face with her hands. "Damn." Was all she said. "Look, I haven't been sure of a lot of things since moving to California but I'm sure I want to be with you." I told her. Alexis looked over at me and smiled.

We didn't say anything, we let our lips do the rest of the talking. J. Holidays 'Suffocate' played in the background as we passionately made out. Alexis leaned her chair all the way back and helped me onto her lap. I made sure to leave a few passion marks on Alexis's chest and stomach, places only we knew about. She refrained from doing the same to me, due to the fact that my mother was getting curious.

This was so romantic.

It had just hit 11 pm. I knew my mother would be pissed about me coming home so late with Alexis but I didn't care. I was starting to fall in love with this girl. I let Alexis enter the house first and waited ten minutes or so before I came in after her.

As soon as I stepped foot in the house, I was greeted by my very upset mother. "Were you with her?" She questioned me, grabbing me by the arm and practically dragging me to the dining room. "She has a name. And no, I wasn't. I had to wait for my car, remember?" I lied. My mother stared at me for a moment before huffing and letting go of me. "Right. I'm sorry, pumpkin. I have a surprise for you. It's waiting upstairs in your room. Hopefully it's still up." She grinned happily.

I quickly jogged upstairs and unhappily walked slowly to my new room at the end of the hall. I pushed the door open and my jaw dropped.

"I missed you so much, Aubrey."

"Mike?"
