CHAPTER EIGHTY-EIGHT

CHAPTER EIGHTY-EIGHT

Alex POV

I couldn’t stay there.

All of them staring at me like I was the dummy in the room.

I mean I was, wasn’t I?

What kind of man doesn’t know that he has a daughter out there somewhere.

I must be the laughingstock.

I couldn’t believe this.

How could Sarah not tell me that we had a daughter.

Why leave it this long?

Was that what she came back to tell me?

I needed answers and I needed them now.

And there was only one place I was going to get them.

Dennis.

As I got into my car, I only had one objective at this point and that was to find out what the fuck was going on.

And why they kept this secret from me.

I deserved to know I had a daughter.

I deserved to at least try and be a father.

They took that away from me.

And I wanted to know why.

And before I knew it, I was heading to the Hamptons.

Heading to the Masters place to confront Dennis.

But nothing would prepare me for what I was about to face.

And nothing would ever prepare me for what would happen afterwards.

Jericho POV

The news had hit Alex hard.

He was a father.

That news would hit anyone hard.

Especially when you learn that the woman you had loved your whole life had kept it a secret from you for more than 20 odd years.

I felt for Alex.

But I didn’t know what I could do for him right now.

I didn’t think he would want me to either.

This was something he most definitely had to do on his own.

The only problem being….

He’s not thinking straight.

And he’s going to fuck shit up.

There was no choice.

I had to stop him before he did something stupid.

And knowing Alex.

He already had.

“Go after him Jericho?”

I heard Cassandra plead.

“What do you expect Jericho to do Cass?”

Alexis had a point.

But I wouldn’t tell Cassandra that.

“Be his brother Jericho.”

“Please.”

I couldn’t hear her plead in my brother’s defence.

I growled in frustration.

“Alright.”

And I fled after Alex.

Why would she ask this of me.

She knew our situation.

But I also knew that it wasn’t in her to let people suffer.

And right now, Alex was suffering.

I knew exactly where Alex was heading.

Didn’t take a genius to work it out.

Plus, I would do the same thing if I was in his position.

I got into my car and started the engine.

I tried Alex on the way to no avail.

He wasn’t going to answer, and I knew this.

It was fruitless to try.

As I raced to catch up to him before he did something stupid.

I wondered what could have possessed Sarah to keep something so vital from him.

She must have had her reasons, I was sure.

But given the fact that even Dennis kept it a secret.

I could only imagine it was for the greater good.

But even I had my doubts.

There was nothing that they could say to make this any better.

For Alex, even his daughter.

She had a right to know who she was.

Well half of her anyway.

And with everything going on I almost forgot about mum’s family brunch tomorrow.

How were we going to keep this from her.

Not only was she going to meet Cassandra for the first time.

She would find out that she had a granddaughter.

She was going to have a shock.

Maybe we should cancel.

If I’m able to get to Alex in time I’ll propose this to him.

I’m pretty sure that he won’t object to this proposal with everything going on.

I imagine he’d welcome it.

As I pass the entrance to the old family home, I notice that Dennis is there at the gate.

But no sign of Sarah or Alex.

What the hell is going on.

No way Alex had double backed.

More to the point where was Sarah.

If Dennis was working that must mean Alex went straight to Sarah.

Oh, this wasn’t good.

I for sure thought he would have had it out with Dennis first not Sarah.

I guess I was wrong.

He went straight to the source.

I needed help on this one.

I had to ask Dennis where she was.

There was nothing for it time was of the essence.

I drive up to the gate and roll down the window to talk to Dennis.

He was as shocked to see me as I thought he would be.

It indicated that he had no idea what I was doing there which meant that Alex had definitely not made himself known.

“Jericho what are you…”

I had to cut the small talk.

“No time Dennis.”

“Where’s Sarah.”

The shocked look on his face let me know that he had no idea how I knew about Sarah coming back.

“Jericho i…”

“Dennis, we don’t have time for this.”

“We know she’s back and that she has a daughter.”

His face went a ghostly white.

“How did you…”

I couldn’t believe he still wanted to talk about this.

“Dennis please.”

He radioed his partner who was clearly sweeping the grounds.

And hopped into my car.

“She’s at my place.”

I nodded to him.

“We don’t have much time.”

“Hopefully Alex hasn’t made it there yet.”

I said as I turned the car and floored the gas pedal.

“Alex?”

“Jericho what the hell is going on?”

I turned to him.

“Alex knows he has a daughter, and he is not best pleased.”

Dennis started shaking his head.

“But how?”

I turned away from him and concentrated back on the road.

“Does it really matter.”

“How could you keep something like this from him.”

“From us.”

He just hung his head in his hands.

“Sarah begged me Jericho.”

“You don’t understand.”

“After that night.”

“After what those low lives did to my Sarah.”

“She wasn’t the same.”

“You and Alex knew that better than anyone.”

He was right.

She wasn’t.

But who would be.

“I understand Dennis but that didn’t give you the right to take that away from Alex.”

“Or your granddaughter.”

“She deserved to know who her father was.”

He looked saddened by the realisation of his wrongdoing.

“Jericho how did you find out?”

I shook my head.

“Does it matter?”

I replied.

“I guess not.”

He mutters.

As we close in on his house I notice Alex’s car outside.

“Fuck.”

As we pull up, I can hear shouting and screaming coming from inside.

“That’s not good.”

I whisper.

Hoping Dennis never heard anything.

Which I was completely wrong about because even before I stopped the car Dennis had flown out of it and was heading inside.

Double fuck.

I quickly switch off the engine and run inside after well….

Everyone.

I didn’t know what I was going to do.

Or who I was going to help.

But I knew if I didn’t intervene someone was going to do something stupid.

Then nobody would get answers.

God how did we get here.
