CHAPTER EIGHTY-SEVEN
CHAPTER EIGHTY-SEVEN
Cassie POV
As I rush back home to find out what Alexis’s guy has found out.
It never occurred to me to contact Jericho and let him know.
He was probably in meetings anyway.
I didn’t want to bother him.
Then I wandered if I was to call Alex to let him know.
I mean it would be wrong not to right.
I find Alex’s contact info and dial his number.
“Alex?”
The call answered.
“Cassandra.”
“What do I owe the pleasure of this phone call.”
His voice sounded delighted.
“We’ve got a big problem.”
His sudden quietness makes it known that he knows exactly what I’m on about.
“Meet me at my place.”
He starts to chuckle.
“Funny thing.”
He says.
I’m confused.
“And what’s so funny.”
He stops abruptly.
“I’m already here.”
This caught me in my tracks.
“Why are you at my place?”
“Never mind I’ll be there in 10.”
And I hang up my cell.
I should definitely call Jericho.
I don’t think he would appreciate me not letting him know that Alexis found something out.
And that Alex was at my place.
Without him being there.
I find Jericho’s number and ring it.
‘Ring, ring.’
The call just keeps ringing when his voicemail finally kicks in.
That’s just great.
Well, I tried.
He can’t be mad at me.
I tried calling and his voicemail answered so this was his fault.
And I’d be sure to tell him that when I did hear from him.
I arrive outside my place in record time.
I was so anxious to find out about what Alexis had found that I almost forgot to turn my engine off.
When I did finally remember in the split second that I forgot I turned the key in the off position for the engine to cut off and quickly jolted out of the car.
I ran straight to the door and unlocked it with my key.
As I was about to barge through the door I was welcomed by the sight of Alex.
“Oh hey.”
He had a smirk on his face.
“Hello there.”
He said in this sultry voice.
I shook my head and carried on into the lounge.
“Lexi.”
I started calling.
“Alexis.”
“I’m here.”
“What did you find out.”
She comes running into the room I guess from the kitchen.
“Oh my god Cassie you’re not going to believe it.”
I waited for her to elaborate.
“I tried to call Jericho but there was no answer.”
I told her.
“I thought he should be here for this…”
“Alex too.”
She turned towards Alex as he walked into the lounge behind me.
“I wondered why he just showed up at our door unannounced.”
“And as for Jericho…”
A tall silhouette walked into the room from the kitchen.
“Who did you think I called first.”
He was here.
Jericho.
Standing in front of me.
Now we were definitely having a conversation.
Alex whistled a wolf whistle from behind.
I turned to him.
Eyes like daggers.
“Don’t start with that shit.”
He held his hands up in defence.
“Sorry.”
I turned back to my so-called boyfriend.
I guess.
And my best friend.
I knew deep down nothing had happened, but I was always doubting everything.
I couldn’t just be happy.
Alexis sat down on the couch.
Jericho walked towards me and tried to embrace me.
I shrug off his advance and head towards the other couch.
His demeanour changed and I could see on his face he was hurt.
Another thing we were going to touch on later.
“So, what did you find out then Lex?”
I interrupted the silence in the room between everyone.
“Well first things first.”
She looks towards Alex.
“It would appear that you have a child.”
I swear to God.
All of our mouths fell wide open.
Especially Alex’s.
“What?”
He jumps up.
“There is no way I have a child.”
He starts pacing.
Biting his fingernails.
‘Well according to state records, you do.”
“And according to Sarah Willis also known as Sarah Masters she is 22 years old studying at NYU psychology.
“Fred was very thorough.”
Alex was not having any of it.
He just kept on pacing and running his hands through his hair.
“No.”
“Fred has to have made a mistake.”
“Sarah would have told me if she were pregnant.”
“She wouldn’t keep something like that from me.”
“She wasn’t like that.”
He looked directly towards Jericho.
“Tell them Jericho.”
“Tell her Fred made a mistake.”
“That Sarah would never do this to me.”
He looked at his younger brother.
And I think I saw sadness in his eyes whilst watching him.
But just as soon as the moment was there.
It was soon enough gone.
Short lived.
“Alex you need to calm down.”
He said.
“You and I both know that Sarah wasn’t herself when she left.”
“And I mean who could blame her after what happened.”
“It’s not surprising to me at all that she was pregnant and never told you.”
Jericho’s reply had Alex reeling.
“And why is that big brother.”
The enthesis on big brother was intentional.
Alex wasn’t liking what he was hearing.
Things were starting to get tense between them.
“Guys we need to chill here.”
“Throwing accusations around won’t help anybody.”
I said calmly.
“Let’s find out what else Fred discovered then we can decide what to do… together.”
Hearing myself be the voice of reason between two grown men made me feel… needed.
They needed me.
“Fine.”
They both chimed in unison.
Alex finally sat back down.
I nodded to Lex to continue.
“Like I was saying.”
“Alex’s so-called daughter studies at NYU.”
“And it seems dear old Dennis done his best to help his daughter cover up the fact that she has a daughter.”
“What do you mean?”
Jericho pipes in.
“Well, the name change, for one.”
“I mean it’s not anything major, but she still tried to change it regardless.’
“But the thing that bothers me most is that she didn’t go very far.”
“If you’re trying to hide, why go down the road three hours away.”
“Why not further.”
We all looked at one another pondering this.
Lex was right.
She really didn’t go far which means she had the intention to come back all along.
“And also…”
“Fred said that she already made it to the Hamptons early.”
“Went straight to her dad’s.”
“So much for her not arriving until next weekend huh Alex.”
We all turned to him.
He looked like he wasn’t even here.
I felt sorry for him.
It’s a pretty sucky way of finding out that you have a kid.
I hoped he was going to be okay.
And just like that he jumped up out of the chair.
Headed out of the room towards the front door.
“Alex.”
Jericho shouted after him.
“Where are you going?”
He turned to look at Jericho.
“I can’t be here right now.”
“I’m sorry I have to go.”
He opened the door, walked through it and within seconds he was gone.
Both I and Alexis looked at each other.
We knew exactly what he was going to do.
The question was did, we chase after him.
I was about to ask when Jericho shook his head and said…
“No.”
“Just leave him.”
“This is something he needs to do.”
It was like he was reading my mind.
It was crazy.
I just stood there looking at the front door.
At the emptiness that once held his presence.
I hoped he didn’t do anything stupid.
I could see this ending badly.
Really badly.
