Chapter 103 Bodyguards

Chapter 103 Bodyguards
  Daxton
I looked at Kian, clicking my tongue silently against my teeth. The things I could do to him. Oh lord.
If there was one thing I loved about my nephew, it was the fact that he was as stubborn as a heifer. A goal-getter. The type to set his mind on something and not move until he achieves it or it completely ruins him.
That was the type of person Kian was and my pleasure?—breaking stubborn people like him.
“Let me drop this in the kitchen,” Verena’s voice broke the tension between us. How dare he call her his wife? I watched Kian crane his head, eyes following Verena and that glint in his eyes, I hated it.
  Longing.
  Want.
  Need.
They shone perfectly as they blended with the blue of his eyes. On the other hand was Jaden, eyes flicking around the house, his lips moving faintly.
  Counting.
  Cameras.
I heaved an exasperated sigh, leaning against the door frame as I cut in before he could finish. “There’s one camera on each side of the entrance, two by the patio, and another four covering the backyard and garden. That makes eight cameras outside in total.”
His shoulders stiffened, fear flashing through those cold eyes for a second. “What?” he whispered, exchanging fleeting glances with Kian.
“You were counting the security cameras, so I figured I’d lend a hand. Need me to tell you how many are inside too?”
His face flushed as he forced an awkward laugh. “Me? Counting cameras? Why would I do that?”
I didn't have the time for this. I only wanted to return to bed with Verena in my arms. Kian stressed me so badly.
“Look, I don't know what you two are planning or what Kian put you up to but if you break into my house—” I turned my eyes to Kian, giving him a cold stare. “—like the last time you broke into Verena’s apartment or think of harming or abducting her, I will send your bodies back to your parents,”
Darkness crawled into Kian’s eyes, his jaw tightening. “Bodies?”
I nodded. “Your mutilated bodies,” I said casually.
Kian let out a small scoff. “You think so low of me, uncle. Why would I want to harm Verena and what makes you think that I’m still interested in her?”
Dark amusement sparked in my eyes.
“I’m a changed person now and everything that I did back then was in the past. If I had known this was your house, I wouldn't even have come with Jaden in the first place. And when I broke into her house then, I did it because I wanted to see my wife—not because I wanted to hurt her!”
Calling ‘Verena’ his wife again? Nice. I was one second away from cracking my fist on his jaw.
Jaden stepped forward. “I’m sorry if we made you feel uncomfortable but we had no idea that you lived here. We were only trying to meet with the new neighbors,”
  Liar. Both Liars.
Kian didn't know my house? The best joke I had heard in a while.
I could still remember when one of the guards had reported some funny movement outside the house. This was all before Verena and I went to New Orleans and I didn't even need to check the camera footage before knowing it was him.
And when I finally checked it, it turned out to be Kian, and right now, these two were planning something.
Something I hadn't figured out yet.
I looked at Kian again and shook my head. “I think you fantasize about the idea of being tortured by me and that’s why you intentionally keep crossing me. The only sad part is your secretary whom you want to drag into this,”
“I WILL NEVER HARM VERENA!” He growled. “I’m not the bad person you are trying to paint me as. The fuck,”
I smirked. “I will trust your word on that. One hair from her head goes missing and you are done for!”
Kian scoffed again, touching Jaden’s shoulder. “Let’s go!”
Jaden lowered his head. “I promise it is not what you think it is. I hope we can be good neighbors to each other—” he finished quietly. “—and my warm regards to Verena. She doesn’t need to return the plate,”
I responded with a silent nod, eyes following Kian who was whispering curse words under his breath and his secretary until they were out of sight.
What could he be planning? I had never felt the need to hire bodyguards for Verena—now I had to because of Kian who could act out of line soon.
He was literally a ticking time bomb.
This was one of the reasons I didn’t want Verena moving out. And the worst part was I knew that my threats had little to no effect on him, because fear and Kian in the same picture? No.
Verena soon appeared, carrying one of her bunnies that I still hadn’t differentiated. Only God knew how she could tell them apart. They both looked the same. Her eyes widened. “They left already?”
“Yeah, and Jaden said you could keep the plate—”
“That’s very nice of him…ah, you won’t believe what happened,” she snapped her fingers while I stared at her with excitement.
  “What happened?”
“Daisy sneaked in to eat the cake that I had left on the kitchen counter. I mean it was barely one minute that I had left the kitchen,”
That was when Daisy trotted in, crumbs of the cake and the icing on her snout as she wagged her tail lazily. “Is that safe? She might have a stomachache,”
“I hope not. Anyway, I have disposed of the rest,”
Somewhere in the corner of my heart, I was relieved that Verena didn't have to eat the cake because I was so sure that the whole ‘cake’ thing wasn't Jaden’s idea. Hell, I might not know Jaden that much but from the times that I had seen him, he didn't look like someone who cared about meeting neighbors or mingling with them. It was Kian’s idea!
“Yeah, it is bad for you anyway,”
I removed my phone from my pocket and sent Josh a text. “Kian’s secretary, Jaden Smith, moved into my neighborhood. Look into the house documents. I need to know whose name is on the paper—”
I fixed my eyes back to Verena, watching her carefully as Daisy leaped at her. If she knew what my plans for her were, she would freak out.
“—Tell Bruno and Rain that their new job is to protect Verena. But secretly. If she notices them, they’ll be fired with immediate effect.”
