Chapter 87: A Birthday Revelation
Elora felt a wave of confusion wash over her.
“Lac doesn’t celebrate his birthday ?” She inquired.
Nico's expression shifted slightly, an uncertainty flickering in his eyes. “I shouldn’t be telling you, but I guess you must know. He hasn’t celebrated his birthdays since he was little, and trust me, he doesn’t like it when someone reminds him or wishes him.”
“But why?” She pressed, worry knotting in her stomach.
Nico hesitated, his gaze darting away momentarily. “It is a long story…I’ll let you know when I get back.”
“But where are you going now? If you guys can’t wish him, can’t I wish him?” She questioned even though she felt guilty as she recalled the words she said to him.
“Charity and orphanage homes. He visits them on his birthday and makes large donations. We won’t be back until evening.” Nico answered back
Elora stood frozen. She had upset him and she was not even sure she could face him. It was his birthday and she said hurtful words to him. Her mind became flurried with thoughts.
“Are you okay?” Nico asked, his tone laced with concern.
Elora nodded. “Yes..yes, I’m just surprised to hear that today is his birthday.”
“You will get used to it.” He retorted then his phone buzzed. He reached his hand into his pocket and glanced at the screen. “Talk of the Devil..I’ve to leave now. See you later.”
“Take care,” Elora said softly, watching helplessly as he left the room. She stood in the room, quiet and restless. She had insulted Lac out of anger and fear and she pondered what his mood would be like.
It was his birthday and she had ruined it. Elora summoned courage and dashed out of the room, she knew she had to apologize to him. She wanted to confess to him that she’d develop feelings for him and she wanted him.
Her feet moved swiftly as she made her way to the lac room. As she stood at the entrance, she knocked on the room loudly, expecting the quick answer she had heard earlier but no answer came.
She tried the handle but it was locked, her heart sank as she realized he had already left. She stood before the door, and a wave of dissatisfaction and frustration washed over her. She wanted to make things right, to apologize to him but now she would have to wait till evening.
As she turned to leave, she shifted her gaze downstairs and caught a glimpse of Nico and lac walking out of the main entrance.
“Lac!” She called but it was too late, they had already walked out of the house. Determined, she held both sides of her dress and rushed downstairs. The maids in the way quickly moved out of the way as they saw her.
Elora rushed out of the house to the driveway but it was too late, the lines of the cars had driven out of the driveway and this left her devastated. She felt a pang of guilt as she realized she had verb caught up in her feelings.
As she walked back to her room, she couldn’t help but feel a sense of admiration towards him. Maybe she had been seeing him wrongly? Despite his tough exterior, he had a soft spot for children and those in need. She was beginning to see the real him despite her initial reservations.
She wondered if she would be able to face and apologize to him when he arrived. Her thoughts were interrupted as she almost bumped into Lyra.
“Ma’am…are you okay?” Lyra questioned curiously.
“Do you think Lac would like to receive it as a gift?” Elora inquired ignoring Lyra’s question.
Lyra furrowed her brows. “Are you aware that today is his birthday?”
“Yeah, Nico informed me.”
“Oh.” She let out then added, “Well, about that ma’am. I would not advise you to do that, I learned my lesson the hard way the first and last time I prepared a surprise.”
“I see,” Elora said, her tone laced with disappointment. “I guess I’ll just think about something different…probably a gift?”
Lyra stared at her thoughtfully. “I don’t..
“Come!” Elora cut in as she pulled Lyra into her room. She closed the door immediately, her eyes gleaming with anticipation. “I have an idea.”
“What idea ma’am?”
“Let’s search online…I’ve seen videos and reels about gifts that a man likes. Let’s see if we can find anything.” Elora retorted calmly.
“That’s a good idea,” Lyra answered back and they settled on the bed. Elora scrolled through her phone while Lyra waited patiently, soon they scrolled to a video and both of them looked at each other.
“Perfect!” They said in unison.
•••••••
Lac rested his head on the edge of the car seat. His mind was occupied with the conversation he and Elora had earlier and his vulnerability had been bothering him.
As the scenery sped by, Lac kept calm, trying to settle his mind.
“You seem lost in thought…is everything okay?” Nico asked curiously, throwing a casual glance at him.
Lac raised his head. “I’m fine…just thinking.” He replied dryly.
“Did something happen between you and Elora? She also seemed lost in thought when I went to check on her this morning.” Nico stated.
“Did she tell you anything happened to her?” Lac questioned, turning his gaze to the window.
“No. I did not ask her anything but she seemed moody.” Nico responded, sensing something was wrong. He knew something had changed between them but he did not know what it was. “Lac?”
“I am a lil fucked up.” Lac let out, still staring at the window.
“Something is bothering you and you know you can talk to me. It is better to let it out. Is it about your birthday?” Nico retorted, his tone firm and gentle.
Lac shot him a sideways glance. “You know not to bring that up.”
Nico nodded while Lac furrowed his brows as he thought about what to say.
“Estoy enamorado.”
Nico widened his eyes, his expression mixed with concern and surprise. “With?”
“Who else? Elora.”
