Chapter 168 A FAIRYTALE REDONE
Chapter 168 A FAIRYTALE REDONE
NIRELLE
"We are going to be late."
"Just a moment," I shout back to Zane, who was waiting for me while I ran around in the room trying to make myself look good. Lucien had told me that we had another event to attend; apparently, it was a charity ball where we had to buy expensive things to give to charity. I liked the idea of it, but I was not really up to wanting to go out. He asked Zane to bring me along, and he was going to meet us there.
I pop my head through the closet door already fully dressed, just trying to match the perfect shoes to the dress that did intend to kill my legs. "It is not like we are the ones to open the event," I chime in before my body disappears once again from view.
"We aren't opening the event, but I think it would be weird for us to walk in when everyone is already seated."
"If you had told me about the event a little earlier, then I would have been ready when you needed me to be," I add. Lucien had already told me about it this morning, and no matter the excuse I gave, he was not willing to let me wiggle my way out of it. I lay in bed until possibly the last minute.
"You knew about it earlier; you are just trying to find an excuse not to go."
"I hate how easily you can read me now," I murmur from inside. It was not a hate situation; it just made me feel too undone in front of them all. "I wish I could read you as much as you can."
"Are you ready?"
"Done." I stand right in front of him, and with a smile on my face, I twirl so he can check the dress out. He had disapproved of everything I had worn earlier.
"The dress code is white, so I think that this should be okay," he said, looking up from his phone. He stood up and slipped the phone into his breast pocket. "Shall we?"
I roll my eyes; he did not even bother to compliment me, and I missed Lucien. He had a way of making me feel special in whatever it was that I wore. "Is Theo coming along with us?"
"He had something urgent to attend to and would be meeting us there," he said as he pulled the door open and stepped out. I fished my bag from the bed, checking and rechecking to be sure that I had everything I needed in it. As we pass the kitchen, I yawn, realising I was a bit hungry, so I stop and take a bag of chips with me.
"I do not think you are allowed to eat that," Zane said when he saw the bag in my hands.
"Says who?" I ask with my nose turned up. "The doctor or Lucien?"
"Well, Lucien," he said as if his words were supposed to be the law. "Or was it the doctor?" he stuttered out when he saw the expression on my face. "I thought the doctor said you could not eat any processed foods."
"Lucien came up with that law because he is fussing over nothing," I say under my breath. To say that he was fussing was literally an understatement. Lucien had banned almost everything, saying what I could not eat. Everything seemed unhealthy, but he always gave in at last, giving me what I wanted.
"Are you going to tell him, though?" He gulped and shook his head at me.
"I am not ready to get into whatever it is that is between you two." He stopped as if he was thinking about what he was supposed to say. "That is plainly between you two, and I am not getting involved, no matter what it is."
The ride to the event was quiet and had me munching on the chips while watching the now very familiar scenery. I could not believe that there was such a time when I was not allowed to see what was going on outside, and now it felt like the entire world was at my fingertips, and all I had to do to get it was snap my fingers.
The hall was smaller than the one that the Wolfe had used for their event, and it threw me off again. Did someone rich just try to use common sense? The doors to the hall open when we stand in front, and by the time I look around, Zane is no longer beside me, and I am standing alone. The aisle to the front is filled with petals.
Lucien was standing at the edge of the aisle with a glowy sign behind him, written in the most beautiful cursive I had ever seen. 'WILL YOU MARRY ME?'
I gasped, confused about what this was supposed to be; my heart jumped in my chest with excitement and fear. Lucien was asking her to marry him when we were already married? Someone took the bag from my hand, and it was replaced with a bouquet. I stared at the beauty in front of me; it was a variety of flowers, and it made me gasp. The woman nudged me towards him, and I felt my legs, which felt stuck to the ground, lift effortlessly, but with each lift, my heart pounded in my chest.
I had never thought about this again; every little girl had a time in their life when they would have dreamed about a fairytale like this, but after all I had gone through, I never thought this would happen to me. That I was going to live out my princess lifestyle. When I stop in front of Lucien, he takes out the flowers from my hand, and his warm hands in mine replace them. He pulled a nervous smile, and I drew a deep breath.
His knee connected with the ground, and the entire room erupted in joy. The kind that made you want to cheer along with them. "Nirelle," he began, and my breath caught once again in my chest.
"When I asked you to marry me, I could not do this for you, even though I really did want to. I was torn between revenge and loving someone, but you came into my world and made me see that it was not a choice, and I could have both. I could not do it right the first time, so I want to do it right this time." He stopped, and I watched the movement in his neck as he swallowed violently.
"You have, in such a short time, taught me how to love and live in the moment. Even when you were badly hurt, all you ever cared about was me, and that is the reason why I have to make it right. I want to ask you now to make me the luckiest man in the world to love you every day, to care for you and our children," he said, and I saw his eyes flicker from my face to my stomach briefly. "So that you are continually a part of my world and everything about it. I can never live without you anymore."
The room erupted again with joy all around. I found it hard to keep a straight face as he spoke because my cheeks were now deep red with joy.
"Would you marry me again? "This time for real and forever?"
I allowed the silence that followed his statement to linger in the room as I built suspense. I nod, and then the words escape my lips. "Yes," I murmured.
"Yes?" he asked, and I wondered if he had thought for a minute that I was ever going to say no.
I bent so I was at his level, and he pulled me back up almost immediately. "Yes," I add as we are both standing eye to eye. "I want to be with you forever," I add with a smile.
He takes out the shiny diamond ring from the box and slips off the old ring from my finger. He pushed the new ring that fit perfectly onto my finger and then pulled me, planting a kiss on my lips.
"I can't wait for you to be Ms Verlice."
"What?" Mrs Verlice? Had he formally changed his name? Was he no longer Vexley but now Verlice?
"Yes," he nods as if he were reading my mind. "I changed it already, and I want..."
"I want to be Mrs Verlice more than you think." I smack my lips against his and then pull away. "I love you."
