Chapter 160 THE BEGGAR’S TRUTH

Chapter 160 THE BEGGAR’S TRUTH

AUTHOR'S POV

"You are just a leech, and I told Father to let you go," Cory screamed at Yvette while she drank silently from the soup bowl in front of her. It was not the first time Cory was lashing out at Yvette, but it was the first time it was going too far.

"I am speaking, and you just sit here sipping on soup? After ruining my family with your devious plans?" He screamed again. Yvette stayed still. Shr ewally did want to react to him, but she knew it was going to be difficult for her to do so without hurting in more ways than she planned.

"My father was doing so well before he met you, and then everything seemed to be going downhill. That is why they say you should never take a beggar off the street. Leave them on the street to rot away and give them as little as you can."

"Cory," Yvette's voice was soft and silent.

"What is it? Do you want to prove to me that you aren't a beggar?" He asked with mocking laughter. "It doesn't matter what you say; everyone knows you are just a poor beggar who got to live a big life and now thinks she is a hotshot."

"Cory!" This time, Yvette was clutching the napkin by her side as her eyes tightened in anger. "Be careful what you say."

"Are you saying I am lying? Your daughter is the major reason we are in this mess." He slammed the table, and Yvette, who was not expecting it, jumped up in fear and looked at him with fearful eyes.

"Exactly. That is how you should look at me. After all, I would be taking over this and would take you off the family. I will make sure you go back to where you came from."

"Okay, good." Yvette threw her spoon into the bowl, making a clanking sound as it dropped. "Good, I will agree with you that I am a poor, lowly beggar. I won't argue with you on that, but one thing..."

"What the hell can it be?"

"Nirelle caused this?" He scoffed and got up. She walked to him, and he backed up. She rolled her eyes at how timid he was being. She thought he wanted a confrontation, and now, all of a sudden, he was backing up as she approached.

"My daughter caused this? You dare to blame her after all you put her through?" Cory was no longer speaking about how close Yvette had gotten. He knew how angry she could get because he had seen her get so angry with everyone before.

"I treated my daughter like a stranger for you and your father, yet for this, you both can't take responsibility?" she asked.

"We didn't ask you to treat her that way." Cory, who had been screaming, was suddenly quiet and timid with his eyes on the floor.

"Would you have allowed her to live here if I did not do it?" She poked his chest. "Would you? I was not the one who kidnapped her, was I? You and your father did that, and I can assure you that as soon as Nirelle speaks, you will join your father behind bars."

"Oh, so this was your plot?" Cory said suddenly. His eyes flashed as if he had made a discovery. "You and your daughter planned this so you could take the company and name right under me and my father."

"If you do not open your eyes to reality now, I will slap you across the face." Yvette was angry at his accusation. "How dare you!"

"What are you going to do?" He raised his chest in her face, and she poked it once again. "How dare..." His words were cut short with a slap resounding over his face, his ear ringing almost immediately. Cory held his face, and with a pained expression, he eyed her up and down.

"The company you keep going on and on about is no longer a company; everyone has pulled out, and it is hell. You can have it because it really has no value for me. Instead of me standing here and being accused of going after something that is falling, I would rather go after another wealthy man."

Yvette's confession made Cory's hand drop from his face. "I knew it," he declared.

"I never told you once that I was interested in your father. I came here because of the money," she declared. This was not how Cory had envisioned this going when he came to confront her. He was supposed to win, but even though no one was winning, it felt like he lost even worse than everyone else.

"I only married him because of the money, not love, not responsibility..." She paused and breathed as heavily as she could. "Heck, I did not even go after him because I wanted a better future for my children. He showed me a life I could have, and I wanted it, so I accepted."

"So you see, you can't try to shame me about something like that." She tilted her head, and his eyes darted, trying to avoid her gaze. "Do you understand that?" He nodded and was ready to escape the room.

"Why don't you go turn yourself in to the police?" He stopped mid-track and turned to her slowly. She shrugged and pointed to the door. "It would save you a lot."

"Turn myself in? You must be crazy." He stepped out for a moment and reappeared with a small suitcase.

"Where are you off to?"

"Dad said I should flee the country so I am safe because..."

"Of course, you'd never think of something like this on your own ever."

Cory was about to say something when a staff member entered the room with two policemen behind him and another one who seemed to be a detective.

"Hello, Mrs and Mr Thamore, we are here to search the house," the detective said. His smile was too weird, as if he was enjoying this, and that made Cory angry.

"Are you having fun?"

"You are really slow, and maybe it is a good thing that you did not get to be the next leader of the family and wealth because you would have run it down," she said, and anger flashed across his face.

"Just doing my job," the detective replied. "Before that, here is a warrant for the arrest of Cory Thamore."

"What?" Cory was ready to bolt, but he knew he was not going to escape so easily with the men who looked twice his size.

"Yes, for aiding the kidnapping of Nirelle Vexley, embezzlement of company funds..." He trailed off as if he was done, and then his eyes met with Cory. "And for rape"

"Rape!? I did not rape anyone."

"Then to prove that, why don't you come with us to the station?"

Cory turned to Yvette and put a finger in her face. "Aren't you going to arrest her?"

"We do not have any evidence to arrest her."

"And you expect me to believe that you did not plot this?" Cory asked as they put the cuffs on him. "You did this, and you'd also end up in jail."

"You wicked and heartless woman," Cory screamed as he was led away.
