Chapter 63 Ultimatum

Chapter 63 Ultimatum
"The Architect." Eva's voice was hollow and distant. "She came to our wedding. Walked right past all your security, all your cameras, all your guards. She stood on our terrace and told me I have one week to decide whether to serve her or watch my family be destroyed."
The color drained from Adrian's face.
"That's impossible. My team swept the entire property. There's no way this could have happened."
"She did it anyway." Eva finally looked at him, her eyes red-rimmed but dry. "She's been watching us, Adrian. All this time, we thought we were being careful, being smart. She walked into our home like it was nothing."
Adrian's expression hardened into something cold and dangerous. "What exactly did she say?"
Eva told him everything the Architect had said, her voice trembling as she recalled the memory.
"She stood there and said, 'You have one week, Eva. Refuse me, and your family's legacy turns to ash. Your children might suffer the consequences. Don't think about running away. Don't think about going to the police or trying to fight me.'" The words lingered in the room like poison.
As she spoke, Adrian's face shifted from shock to anger, then to a cold, thoughtful look that was even scarier than his anger.
When she finished, neither of them spoke.
"She wants us to work for her," Adrian said finally. "Use our resources, our connections. For what purpose?"
"She didn't give many details. She only said the Consortium has 'plans' that could change who holds power." Eva laughed bitterly, not believing it. "No one really knows what that means."
"It means she is planning something major. Something that needs the power our families hold." Adrian started pacing. "The Fransis fortune. The Cavanaugh empire. Together, we control businesses, governments, and financial systems worldwide. In the wrong hands, that power could be very dangerous."
"Could do immense damage." Eva finished. "I know."
"We can't cooperate with her."
"I know that too."
"But we also can't fight her directly. Not yet. Not without knowing what we're dealing with."
Eva stood up, her legs stiff from sitting too long. As she moved, her wedding dress rustled, the fine lace and silk feeling sharp against her skin.
Wearing the wedding dress now felt almost wrong; its lace pressed sharply against her skin, and the smell of roses and champagne reminded her cruelly of the happiness she had felt just hours before.
Grief settled over her, but unexpectedly, anger stirred beneath the surface.
She tried to cling to the numbness, afraid that if she allowed herself to feel everything at once, the pain would knock her down.
A beautiful reminder of the happiness they had just lost, the dress now felt like a ghost clinging to her, its weight a constant reminder of how quickly everything could be taken away.
"So what do we do?"
Adrian stopped pacing and turned to face her. His eyes were full of determination.
"We stick to what we know, Eva. First, we gather intelligence, build new alliances, and identify her vulnerabilities." His jaw tightened, his voice low and resolute. "This time, she will learn exactly what it costs to threaten our family."
"In one week?"
"We start in one week. The fight might last much longer." He walked over and took her hands. "Eva, I won't pretend otherwise—this is terrifying. The Architect slipped right past all our security on our wedding night. Clearly, she's capable of things we never thought possible."
"But?"
"But we've faced impossible challenges before. We have survived Helena, outplaying Reena, and exposing the Consortium nearly cost us everything, yet we made it through." He squeezed her hands, his voice carrying the weight of all they had endured. "We'll get through this, too. Our lives and our family's future depend on it."
Eva wished she could believe him. She wanted to feel as sure as he did.
But she had seen the Architect's eyes and had felt the absolute certainty radiating from her like cold from ice.
This enemy had a level of skill and threat unlike any they had faced before, challenging what they thought they knew about weakness and control in new ways.
Eva wasn't sure anything they'd faced before could really prepare them for what was ahead.

By noon, the estate's atmosphere had undergone a stark transformation; the lingering scent of flowers mingled uneasily with the tense silence.
The remnants of the wedding celebration stood in sharp contrast to the charged anticipation that now filled each hallway, marking the shift from a wedding venue to a war room.
The family gathered quickly after Adrian contacted them.
Daniel was the first to arrive, appearing within an hour, his demeanor grave and focused.
Soon after, Richard descended from his room, looking older but with renewed determination.
Leonard Gu demonstrated the urgency of the situation by canceling all his meetings to join them.
Finally, Eleanor Cavanaugh, Adrian's resolute grandmother, made the trip from the Cavanaugh estate to be with the group.
They met in the study. Outside the windows, leftover wedding decorations reminded them how quickly their happiness had ended.
"Tell us everything," Eleanor ordered. She was a small woman with steel-gray hair and eyes that had seen decades of business fights. Nothing about her seemed soft. "Leave nothing out."
Eva recounted the Architect's visit, her words echoing softly against the study's paneled walls as sunlight filtered through the drawn curtains, casting slanted patterns across the heavy carpet.
She carefully watched the group's different reactions: Daniel sat stiffly in his chair, his knuckles turning white as he clenched his fists, held back in frustration.
Richard's face turned pale, and a slight tremor ran through his shoulders as he stared at the floor in shock, the lingering floral scent from the wedding mixing oddly with the stale air.
Leonard stayed calm but focused; the soft scratch of his pen as he quickly wrote detailed notes sounded unusually loud in the tense room.
In contrast, Eleanor regarded Eva with an unwavering expression, her sharp eyes betraying nothing, her figure framed sharply by the muted light at the window.
When Eva finished, the room was silent.
"So," Eleanor said finally, "we're facing someone who can get past Adrian's security, who controls one of the most powerful secret groups in the world, and who has given us seven days to give in or be destroyed."
"That's the situation, yes."
"Interesting." Eleanor's tone suggested she found it anything but. "And what do you propose to do about it?"
"We fight," Eva said immediately.
"With what? Against whom?" Eleanor's gaze was sharp. "You don't even know this woman's real name. You don't know where she works from, who her friends are, or what resources she has. You're suggesting going to war against a ghost."
"Then we make her real." Eva's voice hardened. "We find out who she is, where she came from, what she wants. Everyone has a past. Everyone has weaknesses. We find hers."
She looked around the room, meeting each pair of eyes. "Adrian, start by checking where she might have gotten in. Review the security videos again and look for anything we missed."
