Chapter 62 Architect

Chapter 62 Architect
Eva's heart pounded in her chest.
"You, you are the Architect."
"It's such a dramatic name, isn't it? But it works." The Architect stepped closer, moving with calm, practiced ease. "I've been watching you, Eva. For a long time. You've proven to be very resilient."
"What do you want?"
"I see. You get straight to the point. I like that." The Architect studied Eva with pale eyes. "What I want is simple. I want you to know your place. Victor Chen may have made promises, but he's no longer in charge."
"I took control of the Consortium after showing the council his weaknesses. He lost their trust, and I stepped in when they needed someone who would act without hesitation. Now the decisions and the consequences are mine to decide."
She let the words sink in, then said, "From now on, when the Consortium calls, you will respond. I expect your loyalty and obedience, Eva. Don't try my patience."
Eva felt off balance. "So you've taken over the Consortium."
"I'm just doing what I have to for the group. I've brought it back to its real purpose. Victor has grown weak with age, making deals and giving in to threats from the people we hunt."
"He's forgotten that power is meant to be used, not just held." The Architect's voice grew harder. "I'm not like him. I don't make deals, Mrs. Cavanaugh. I give orders. And I expect them to be followed."
"And if they're not?"
"Then they will face the consequences." The Architect looked toward the house. "Danger can come quickly to those you love, Eva. Remember that."
Eva clenched her fists, her breath quickening as anger surged through her, setting her nerves on edge.
Underneath her anger, fear, and helplessness crept in. She fought against the worry that she couldn't protect the people she loved.
The Architect had gotten past all the security systems, entering Eva's home without triggering any alarms. No motion sensor blinked, no warning light turned on.
The faint smell of rain mingled with the cold metal scent of the untouched security panel, revealing how quietly she moved through the shadows.
The eerie silence of the entryway showed just how smart and dangerous she was.
"If you touch my children—"
"Don't worry. I'm not going to hurt your children. Not yet." The Architect raised her hand. "I'm here to give you a choice. Work with me. Use your family's resources, your connections, and your influence the way I say, and your family stays safe."
Eva just glared at her. "I'm not powerful enough to be of your use."
The Architect ignored Eva's glare and kept talking. "Don't try to fool me, Eva. I know exactly who you can reach. With your Fransic and Cavanaugh family resources, you have access to technology and information most people could never get."
Eva couldn't deny that, so she stayed silent.
"One phone call from you can change a board decision or open doors where others can't even get in. That's why you're valuable." The Architect shrugged. "You're a smart woman. You know what that means."
"You want us to work for you."
The Architect nodded. "I want you to serve a bigger goal. The Consortium has plans, Mrs. Cavanaugh. Plans that could change the balance of power in ways you can't imagine. You can be part of that future, or you can be left behind."
Eva stared at the woman who seemed to have stepped out of her nightmares.
This was the enemy she had felt hiding in the shadows.
Months ago, a series of grainy photographs arrived in unmarked envelopes—her children walking to school, Adrian meeting with a colleague in the city, her own face caught in a window after midnight.
Each image was accompanied by a slip of paper with a time and date, but no message.
Eva had shredded them and locked the fear away, refusing to let Adrian see.
Victor had warned her, his voice shaking for the first time in all the years she'd known him.
He was afraid, though he tried to hide it, telling her to be extra careful, double the security, and avoid her usual routines. The Architect had made even Victor Chen scared.
And she had even shown up at Eva's wedding without an invitation.
Into her home.
"I need time to think," Eva said, keeping her voice steady by sheer will.
"Of course. I'm not unreasonable." The Architect gave her a cold smile. "I'll give you time. You have one week. After that, I'll expect your answer."
She turned to leave but paused.
"Oh, and Eva? Here's some advice: don't think about running away. Don't think about going to the police or trying to fight me." Her pale eyes glittered in the moonlight.
"I've been doing this longer than you've been alive. I've destroyed people much more powerful than you. If you become my enemy, I won't just kill you. I'll destroy everything you love, bit by bit, while you watch."
With that, she slipped into the shadows as quietly as she had arrived.
Eva stood frozen on the terrace, the cold night air sinking deep into her bones. Her wedding dress, which had held happiness just moments before, now pressed against her like a heavy weight crushing any hope or comfort.
She felt her heart pounding in her chest, her hands sweaty, and her fists still clenched, unable to let go of her fear.
The world seemed to spin beneath her feet, and her breath came in short, uneven gasps as fear pressed down on her shoulders, keeping her frozen in place.
For a moment, Eva forgot how to move. All she could do was stand in the moonlight, trapped by fear and the heavy weight of choices she still had to make.
One week.
She had one week to find a way out of this. To keep her family safe, she needs to make a decision.
One week to protect her family from the monster she couldn't defeat.
The threat she had tried to ignore was finally real.
And it was demanding an answer.
As the night deepened, the house settled into silence once more.

Eva didn't sleep that entire night.
She didn't even remember how she got to the library.
She sat in the library until dawn, her wedding dress pooling around her on the cold leather armchair, the stiff lace digging into her skin.
Eva's body was stiff, arms wrapped tightly around herself, as if to hold her thoughts inside.
Her eyes, wide and unfocused, remained fixed on the dust motes drifting through shafts of early light while her mind raced through impossible choices.
The Architect's words echoed in her mind, a warning she couldn't shake.
One week.
Cooperate or lose everything.
When morning light came through the windows, Adrian found her there. He had been searching for hours, and his face shifted from confusion to alarm, then to something more serious when he saw her expression.
"Eva." He crossed the room in quick strides, kneeling before her chair. "What happened? The security team said you were on the terrace, and then you vanished. I've been—"
"She was here."
Adrian froze. "Who?"
