Chapter 152: Dangerous Games

The clicking of computer keys echoed through Veronica's dimly lit home office as three figures huddled around multiple screens. Veronica's fingers flew across the keyboard while Isabella and Alexander stood behind her, watching lines of code and financial records flash by.

"There," Veronica said, pointing to a string of transactions. "I found what Marcus tried to hide. He created a complex web of shell companies, but there's always a trail if you dig deep enough."

Isabella leaned closer. "These dates... they match perfectly with when our fathers started making those strange investment decisions."

"But look at this," Alexander interrupted, tapping the screen. "The money didn't just disappear into those failing companies. It was redirected through at least a dozen offshore accounts before ending up here." He traced the flow of funds to a final destination.

Veronica let out a low whistle. "A private account in the Cayman Islands. And guess who has signing authority?"

"Marcus Lee," Isabella and Alexander said in unison.

"That's not all," Veronica continued, pulling up another window. "I found something else while digging through old security footage from Romano Industries." She played a video showing Charles Romano in what appeared to be a heated argument with Marcus in his office, dated just two days before his death.

Alexander's hands gripped the back of Veronica's chair. "Can you enhance the audio?"

After some technical adjustments, fragments of the conversation became clearer:

"You can't prove anything," Marcus's voice crackled through the speakers.

"I have enough evidence to destroy you," Charles responded. "Jonathan and I both do."

"Then perhaps you should be more careful about where you drive at night, old friend."

Isabella's hand found Alexander's arm. "The car accident... it wasn't an accident at all."

"No," Alexander's voice was tight with rage. "It was murder. Both our fathers were murdered because they discovered what Marcus was doing."

Veronica switched to another screen. "The upcoming charity gala might be our only chance to access Marcus's private files. His main office will be empty while he plays host."

"It's too dangerous," Alexander protested, turning to Isabella. "If Marcus catches on-"

"I'll do it," Isabella interrupted. "I can get into his office during the gala. The security will be focused on the main event."

"Not alone," Alexander said firmly. "We do this together."

Veronica cleared her throat. "Actually, I have a plan. But you're not going to like it, big brother."

Over the next hour, they refined their strategy. Isabella would keep Marcus occupied at the gala while Alexander accessed his office. Veronica would handle the security systems remotely.

"There's something else you should know," Veronica said hesitantly, pulling up one final document. "I found this in Dad's personal email archive. It's a letter he wrote to you, Alexander, the day before he died. He never sent it."

Alexander read the letter aloud, his voice growing hoarse:

"Son,

If you're reading this, something has happened to me. The merger with Beckett Holdings isn't what you think. Isabella isn't just a business arrangement – she's your protection. Together, you and Jonathan's daughter might be the only ones who can expose the truth. Trust her, Alexander. Like I should have trusted others.

Dad"

Silence fell over the room. Isabella watched as Alexander struggled to maintain his composure.

"We have three days until the gala," she said softly. "We need to be ready."

The next days passed in a blur of preparation. Isabella spent hours practicing her role, memorizing the layout of Marcus's building, while Alexander worked with Veronica on bypassing security systems.

The night before the gala, Isabella found Alexander on the penthouse balcony, staring out at the city lights.

"Having second thoughts?" she asked, joining him at the railing.

"About taking down Marcus? No." He turned to face her. "About putting you in danger? Yes."

"Alexander-"

"I lost my father," he cut in, his voice rough with emotion. "I can't lose you too."

The words hung between them, heavy with meaning neither was ready to fully acknowledge.

Isabella stepped closer, resting her hand over his on the railing. "You won't lose me. But we have to do this. For our fathers. For justice."

He intertwined their fingers, pulling her closer. "When did this become real?" he murmured. "This thing between us?"

"I think it always was," she whispered. "We just couldn't see it through all the anger and suspicion."

Alexander's free hand cupped her cheek, his thumb tracing her jawline. "Isabella, if something goes wrong tomorrow-"

She pressed her fingers to his lips. "Nothing will go wrong. We'll finish this together."

Their faces drew closer, the moment electric with possibility. Then Alexander's phone buzzed – a message from Marcus about final gala arrangements.

Reality crashed back. They had a mission to complete, a murderer to expose, and no room for distractions, no matter how tempting.

"We should get some rest," Isabella said, stepping back. "Tomorrow will change everything."

As they headed inside, neither saw the drone hovering quietly in the distance, its camera capturing their every move. In his office, Marcus Lee watched the feed with growing anger.

"Such a shame," he muttered, reaching for his phone. "They actually fell in love. That wasn't part of the plan at all." He dialed quickly. "Change of plans for tomorrow. The happy couple needs to have an... accident. After all, history does tend to repeat itself."

The pieces were set. The gala would indeed change everything – but perhaps not in the way anyone expected.
