Chapter 151: Unraveling Truths
The late evening sun cast long shadows across Alexander's penthouse office as Isabella stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, her fingers absently tracing patterns on the cool glass. Behind her, she could hear Alexander's frustrated sigh as he pored over another stack of financial documents.
"These transactions make no sense," Alexander muttered, running a hand through his disheveled dark hair. "Every major decision my father made in the last three months before his death... it's like he was deliberately weakening the company's position."
Isabella turned away from the window, studying her husband's tense profile. Over the past weeks, their initial coldness had gradually given way to something else – not quite warmth, but a shared purpose that made their arranged marriage more bearable.
"Show me," she said, moving to stand behind his chair. The proximity made her pulse quicken, but she focused on the documents before them. "What exactly looks wrong?"
Alexander leaned back, his shoulder brushing against her arm. "Look at these investments. My father pulled out of three major profitable ventures, then immediately invested in smaller companies that were clearly struggling. It's not like him. Charles Romano never made decisions based on sentiment."
"My father did something similar," Isabella said slowly, reaching for her laptop. "I noticed it when I was reviewing the Beckett Holdings' records yesterday." She pulled up the files, setting her laptop beside Alexander's documents. "Here – see the pattern?"
Alexander's eyes narrowed as he compared the records. "They both started making these unusual moves around the same time. This can't be coincidence."
"But why?" Isabella settled into the chair next to him, their shoulders touching as they hunched over the documents. "What could have forced both our fathers to act against their better judgment?"
"Blackmail?" Alexander suggested, his voice hard. "Or maybe-"
A sharp knock interrupted them. Marcus Lee stood in the doorway, his trademark smile in place. "Working late, I see? The newly-weds should be enjoying their honeymoon phase, not buried in paperwork."
Isabella felt Alexander tense beside her. His hand found hers under the desk, squeezing it in warning.
"Marcus," Alexander's tone was carefully neutral. "What brings you here at this hour?"
Marcus strolled in uninvited, his expensive shoes clicking against the hardwood floor. "Can't I check on my favorite power couple? Besides, I wanted to discuss that joint venture we talked about last week."
Isabella watched Marcus carefully, noting how his eyes darted to the documents on the desk before focusing back on Alexander. There was something predatory in his gaze that made her skin crawl.
"Actually," Isabella spoke up, surprising both men, "we were just heading out to dinner." She began gathering the documents, making sure to mix them with other random papers before sliding them into a folder.
Marcus's smile didn't waver, but something flickered in his eyes. "Another time then. Though I must say, Alexander, your wife seems quite involved in company matters. Jonathan would be proud to see his daughter taking such an... active interest in business."
The mention of her father made Isabella's throat tight. Alexander's hand found the small of her back, a gesture that felt surprisingly protective.
"Isabella is a Romano now," Alexander said smoothly. "Her involvement in the company is exactly where it should be."
After Marcus finally left, they waited several minutes in tense silence. Alexander moved to the bar, pouring two glasses of whiskey. He handed one to Isabella, their fingers brushing.
"He knows something," Isabella said quietly, taking a sip. The liquid burned her throat.
Alexander nodded, his jaw tight. "The question is how much. Those companies our fathers invested in – I need to look into their ownership structure. Want to bet we'll find Marcus's fingerprints all over them?"
Isabella set down her glass. "I can help. I know people who can dig deeper without raising alarms."
Alexander studied her for a long moment, his expression softening. "You're nothing like I expected, you know that?"
"Is that a good thing?" she asked, trying to keep her tone light despite the warmth spreading through her chest.
He stepped closer, reaching out to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. The gesture was so unexpected that Isabella forgot to breathe.
"I'm starting to think it might be the best thing that's happened to me in a long time," he murmured.
The moment stretched between them, charged with unspoken possibilities. Then Alexander's phone buzzed, breaking the spell. It was a message from Veronica.
"My sister found something," he said, scanning the text. "We should head to her place now."
Isabella nodded, already gathering her things. As they headed to the elevator, she felt Alexander's hand on the small of her back again. This time, instead of feeling like part of their carefully maintained pretense, the touch felt real – and that was more terrifying than any business conspiracy they were uncovering.
In the elevator, Alexander turned to her. "Whatever we find out tonight... I want you to know I trust you, Isabella. I didn't think I would, but I do."
"I have faith in you as well," she responded gently. "And we will discover what occurred to our fathers." Together.
The elevator doors slid open to reveal the parking garage, and they exited into the shadows, both aware that this night could alter everything. Neither observed the tiny red light of a concealed camera monitoring their actions, nor the silhouette observing them through various screens in a remote office, fingers interlaced in thought.
Marcus Lee grinned while observing the couple depart. "Oh, Charles," he said quietly to himself, "you ought to have shown your son that trust can swiftly lead to losing it all." He grabbed his phone, entering a known number. "It's time to progress to the next stage." "They're approaching too near."
