Chapter 139: Bullseye
Near the Bar
As the evening progressed, the guests continued to mingle. Alexander and Lucas found themselves near the bar, engaged in a quiet conversation.
"I can't believe we have to play nice with these people," Alexander muttered, his eyes scanning the room.
Lucas sighed. "I know, but we have to think about the bigger picture. Securing father's legacy is more important than personal grudges."
Before Alexander could respond, James Bennett approached, a smug smile on his face.
"Well, well, if it isn't the Romano brothers," James sneered. "Enjoying the party?"
Alexander's jaw tightened. "Yes, thank you."
James chuckled. "I'm surprised you showed up. Figured you'd be too busy mourning."
Alexander's eyes flashed with anger. "Watch your mouth, Bennett."
James raised an eyebrow. "Or what?"
Lucas stepped between them. "Alright, that's enough. We're here to celebrate."
Johnathan, noticing the tension, intervened. "Gentlemen, let's not spoil the evening. Isabella is about to cut her cake."
At the center of the Ballroom
Johnathan clinked his glass, drawing everyone's attention. "Ladies and gentlemen, if I could have your attention, please."
The room quieted, and all eyes turned to Johnathan. He smiled warmly. "Tonight, we celebrate my daughter Isabella's 21st birthday. Isabella, please come to the center."
Jennifer stepped forward, trying to keep her nerves in check. Johnathan handed her a knife.
"Make a wish, my dear," he said softly.
Jennifer nodded, closing her eyes briefly before cutting into the cake. The room erupted in applause.
As the applause died down, a sudden gunshot rang through the room. The festive atmosphere shattered in an instant. Johnathan clutched his chest, his glass of champagne falling from his hand. Blood spread rapidly across his suit.
"Dad!" James shouted, rushing to his father's side. "Someone call the paramedics!"
The room descended into chaos. Guests screamed and ducked for cover. Jennifer stood frozen, her mind reeling.
"What the hell," she whispered, unable to process what had just happened.
The gunshot echoed through the ballroom, freezing everyone in place. Alexander and Lucas Romano stood near the bar, their drinks forgotten.
Alexander's eyes locked on Johnathan Bennett as he crumpled to the floor, blood spreading across his suit. His mind raced, a mix of shock and anger bubbling up.
"Lucas, did you see that?" Alexander's voice was low, almost a growl.
Lucas nodded, his face pale. "Yeah, I saw it. This is bad, Alex. Really bad."
Alexander's jaw tightened. "We need to stay calm. Figure out what's going on."
Lucas grabbed Alexander's arm, pulling him back slightly. "We need to get out of here before things get worse."
Alexander shook his head, his eyes still fixed on the chaos. "No, we need to understand what's happening. This could be related to us, to Father's death."
Lucas looked around, trying to gauge the situation. "You think someone's targeting us?"
"It's possible. The Bennetts have a lot of enemies, and so do we." Alexander's voice was tense, his mind already working through the possibilities.
Lucas pulled Alexander towards a more secluded corner of the room, away from the panicking guests. "If this is about our families, we need to be strategic. We can't afford to act recklessly."
Alexander nodded, running a hand through his hair. "Agreed. But we need information. We need to know who's behind this."
Lucas glanced around, his expression serious. "We should split up. I'll try to gather information from the guests, and see if anyone sees anything suspicious. You check on Bennett. See if he knows anything."
Alexander's eyes narrowed. "Fine. But be careful, Lucas. We can't trust anyone right now."
Lucas nodded. "You too, Alex. Don't do anything stupid."
Lucas moved through the crowd, listening to snippets of conversations, looking for any signs of useful information.
"Did you see where the shot came from?"
"No idea. It was so sudden."
Lucas approached a group of guests who seemed particularly shaken. "Excuse me, did any of you see what happened?"
One of the women nodded, her voice trembling. "I think it came from that balcony over there. But I'm not sure."
Lucas followed her gaze to the balcony, noting its strategic position. "Thank you. That's very helpful."
Alexander knelt beside Johnathan, who was being attended to by paramedics. He glanced at James, who was hovering nearby, his face a mask of fury and fear.
"James, do you have any idea who might have done this?" Alexander asked, keeping his voice low.
James looked up, his eyes blazing. "No, but I swear I'll find out. And when I do, they'll pay."
Alexander nodded, his expression grim. "We need to work together on this. Our families have a lot of enemies. We can't afford to be divided."
James's eyes narrowed. "Why should I trust you?"
"Because our families' futures are intertwined now, whether we like it or not. And because I want to find out who killed my father just as much as you want to find out who shot yours."
James hesitated, then nodded. "Alright. But no tricks, Romano. I'm watching you."
Lucas returned to the corner where he had left Alexander. "I think the shot came from the balcony. It's a good vantage point."
Alexander nodded. "James doesn't know who did it, but he's determined to find out. We need to keep an eye on him, make sure he doesn't go off the rails."
Lucas sighed. "This is a mess. But we need to stay focused. If this is part of a larger plan, we need to be ready."
Alexander's eyes hardened. "We'll find out who's behind this. And when we do, we'll make them pay."
Lucas placed a hand on his brother's shoulder. "One step at a time, Alex. Let's start by securing the area and gathering more information. We need to be smart about this."
Alexander nodded, his mind already turning over strategies and plans. "You're right. Let's get to work."
Lucas grabbed Alexander's arm. "We need to get out of here. Now."
Alexander's eyes were fixed on Johnathan's fallen form. "This isn't over," he said through gritted teeth.
