Chapter 138: The Birthday Bash

In Isabella's Bedroom

Jennifer was adjusting the delicate straps of her dark blue dress when the door creaked open. A maid stepped in, her eyes lighting up at the sight of her.

"Miss Isabella, the party has started. Your father is waiting for you downstairs."

Jennifer's heart raced. "Thank you. I'll be down in a moment."

The maid nodded and left, closing the door softly behind her. Jennifer turned to the mirror, trying to steady her breathing.

"Okay, you've got this," she whispered to herself. "Just act like Isabella. How hard can that be?" She asked herself sarcastically.

Just as she took a deep breath, there was a knock on the door. Jennifer tensed.

"Come in," she called, hoping her voice didn't betray her nerves.

Johnathan Bennett, Isabella's father, entered. His face lit up with a warm smile.

Johnathan had two children: James, his first son, whom he had with his ex-wife Bianca Brammer, and his daughter, Isabella, with whom he had his runaway wife, Faith.

"There's my birthday girl! Hug your dear father. You look beautiful, darling."

Jennifer forced a smile. "Thanks, Dad."

Johnathan approached, his expression shifting to one of concern. "You've been acting a bit strange lately. Is everything alright? Hope you aren't coming down with a bad cold?"

Jennifer's mind raced. "Oh, you know how it is. Just... a lot on my mind."

Johnathan chuckled. "Young people and their worries. I suppose it's about the proposal?"

Jennifer's stomach dropped. "Proposal?"

Johnathan looked perplexed. "The marriage proposal to the Romano family. We discussed this months ago. Isabella, are you alright?"

Jennifer quickly nodded, trying to mask her shock. "Yes, of course. I just... forgot. There's been so much happening."

Johnathan's face softened. "I understand. But you must make this marriage work, for the sake of both our families."

Jennifer swallowed hard, nodding. "I'll do my best, Dad."

Johnathan hugged her. "That's my girl. Now, hurry down. Everyone's waiting to celebrate with you."

As he left, Jennifer took a deep breath, trying to collect herself. "Marriage to the Romano family? What the heck have I gotten myself into?"

The Ball Room

Jennifer made her way through the grand hallways, almost losing her way in the sprawling mansion. Finally, she reached the ballroom. The room was dazzling, filled with glittering lights and elegantly dressed guests. A live band played soft music, setting a festive mood.

"Alright, Jennifer, you've got this," she whispered again, smoothing her dress one last time.

She stepped into the room, her entrance drawing the attention of the guests. Murmurs of admiration and birthday wishes floated through the air.

"Isabella! Over here!" a voice called.

Jennifer turned to see a group of young women waving at her. She recognized them from faint memories of Isabella's friends.

"Hey, girls," Jennifer greeted, hoping her voice sounded natural.

"You look stunning!" one of them exclaimed.

"Thanks. You all look great too," Jennifer replied, trying to blend in.

Jennifer's eyes scanned the room, looking for her father. She spotted him talking to a tall, distinguished man who carried an air of authority. Jonathan Bennett noticed her and waved her over.

"Isabella, come meet Mr. Alejandro," he called.

Jennifer's heart skipped a beat. This must be the man she was supposedly engaged to.

"Mr. Romano, this is my daughter, Isabella," Johnathan introduced proudly.

Mr. Romano smiled warmly. "Happy birthday, Isabella."

"Thank you, Mr. Romano," Jennifer replied, trying to keep her voice steady.

Jonathan placed a hand on her shoulder. "Mr. Romano and I were just discussing the upcoming engagement. I'm sure you're excited."

Jennifer forced a smile. "Yes, very excited."

Mr. Romano nodded approvingly. "Your father speaks highly of you. I'm sure this union will be beneficial for both our families."

Jennifer nodded, her mind racing. "I hope so."

Ballroom Floor

As the evening progressed, Jennifer found herself surrounded by well-wishers and friends. She tried to stay composed, drawing on the faint memories she had of Isabella's life. But the constant fear of being discovered gnawed at her.

"Isabella, would you care to dance?" a young man asked, extending his hand.

Jennifer hesitated, then smiled. "Of course."

They moved to the dance floor, joining the other couples. As they danced, Jennifer tried to relax. The music was soothing, and for a moment, she almost felt like she belonged.

"You seem different tonight," her dance partner remarked.

Jennifer's heart skipped a beat. "Different? How so?"

"I don't know. More... thoughtful, I guess. It's nice."

Jennifer smiled, relieved. "Thank you. I suppose birthdays make you feel different." She stopped dancing to get a drink, "excuse me."

Johnathan stood at the grand entrance, greeting each guest with a firm handshake and a warm smile. The room buzzed with chatter and laughter as elegantly dressed men and women mingled.

"Welcome, Mr. and Mrs. Thompson. Enjoy the evening," Johnathan said, shaking hands with a distinguished couple.

He turned as the doors opened again. Alexander Romano and his younger brother Lucas stepped into the room, their presence commanding attention.

"Alexander, Lucas, welcome," Johnathan greeted, extending his hand.

Alexander accepted the handshake with a tight smile. "Thank you for having us."

Lucas nodded a more genuine smile on his face. "It's a pleasure to be here."

Johnathan guided the Romano brothers through the crowd. "Come, let me introduce you to my daughter, Isabella."

Jennifer, still adjusting to the role of Isabella, stood near the center of the room, a glass of champagne in her hand. She turned as they approached.

"Isabella, this is Alexander and Lucas Romano," Johnathan said proudly.

Jennifer's eyes widened slightly as she took in Alexander's striking features. "It's a pleasure to meet you both."

Alexander's expression remained cool. "Likewise."

Lucas offered a warm smile. "Happy birthday, Isabella."

"Thank you," Jennifer replied, her voice steady despite the fluttering in her chest.

Alexander took a long look at her, this was the woman he was to marry. She was about 5, 9 feet tall. She had a nice hip shape which attracted Alexander and she had a round-shaped face with cute cat eyes. A malicious plan brews in Alexander's mind.
