Chapter 66 Happy Birthday, Wifey
Evelyn's POV.
He was ordering me around when the suggestion was mine. But that had always been Adrian Kane, the man with the control.
The next day came by in a blur. The whole internet buzzed with the news of the birthday party early in the morning.
“New update; Wife of Adrian Kane throws a birthday party this Saturday. Adrian Kane launching a new team for his company.”
The news was huge and like I had expected, everyone talked about it.
Father called that morning, his call being the call that made me sit up on the bed after being awake for an hour, only going through my phone.
“You are throwing a birthday party?” He asked.
Yes, that was the obvious. But I didn't respond that way.
“Yes, Dad. Everyone is invited,” I said. “We will send invitations out soon.”
Eva's loud voice came from the other end of the phone, sounding cheerful. “What's gotten into you?”
“The last time I asked, you said you won't be celebrating this year's birthday,” Eva laughed.
I replied with a laugh. “I know right, things happen.”
We talked for a while, Mom also chirping into the conversation.
After the call ended, a knock came on my door. It was Mira.
She bowed slightly when she walked in. My eyes were fixed on her, waiting for what she had to say.
“Mr. Kane instructed me to start getting you ready for the party,” she said. “We have a lot to do, so we start now.”
It felt like it was more than just a birthday party.
Invitations were sent out but anyone was still allowed to come to the party. Dresses were picked out and every other thing done by Mira and I.
Three days went by in a blur, making me realize the days are short and the nights are even shorter.
It was the D-Day of my birthday party. All morning was spent with Eva in Adrian's home, chatting and playing games because she wanted to make my day.
By evening, around 6pm, Mira knocked on my room door, walking in after permitted.
“It's time to get ready, ma'am,” She said, keeping her face slightly bowed.
That moment, Eva leaned in closer to me. “This housekeeper of yours is scary. Her presence usually makes me shiver.”
We both laughed at her words while Mira stared at us blankly.
Like Mira wanted, I got dressed for the party, staring at my reflection in the mirror and taking a deep breath.
“The dress looks so great on you, Evelyn!” Eva cooed.
Another chapter of my life was starting. Like always, it started with wishes from my parents and Eva, including Mira. But not from Adrian Kane who I hadn't set my eyes on for once today.
By 7, I was done preparing for the party. That was when Adrian's call came in.
I stared at my phone, not understanding why I didn't want to pick but one thing was certain, I had anger boiling inside of me.
These days, I must have been expecting a lot from Adrian Kane. There's no love, yet I have expectations, a tiny bit of hope that this could start working as a real marriage.
I must have been delusional for too long.
I picked the call, Adrian's voice rising calmly.
“It's time. Get to the party by 8, don't be late,” he said. “I'll be there waiting for you.”
Eva got dressed too and when she was done, we walked downstairs. I faced Mira as we attempted to walk out.
“You should come too. Have some fun once in a while,” I said.
“My job is to take care of the house, you have fun ma'am,” Mira smiled. “Happy birthday once again.”
I stared, knowing there was no way to persuade her. She'll only stay home like she had just said.
“Let's go,” I muttered to Eva. We both walked out of the house, meeting with David who stood in front of the main entrance, his head bowed slightly.
“Happy birthday ma'am,” he said. “This way to the car.”
He led us to where the car was and I was surprised to see a decorated black sleek car parked separately in the parking lot.
It was the first time I was seeing the car in Adrian's mansion. The car looked new, sparkling clean and it made my lips part.
“This car arrived today from the states, ma'am.” David's voice made me get over my shock. “To celebrate your night party, boss wants me to drive you in this new car to the venue.”
Eva walked around the car, examining it with her lips parted wide.
“Goddamn! This is a fucking new Lamborghini!” She snapped her face back to David. “Does that mean the car is hers?”
With a smile on David's face, he responded. “That's correct.”
I was shocked to the bone marrow. I didn't expect this from Adrian. I never even thought about getting a gift from him but he gave me a car.
“Let's go. We don't want to be late,” he opened the car door, Eva sliding in before I did the same.
The car seat looked so nice, black seats mixed with red, shining greatly. The interior of the car looked so goddamn expensive and I couldn't stop admiring it for a second.
“Wow,” Eva kept muttering. “This is huge.”
The drive to the hotel where the party was taking place was smooth and fast. Cars were lined up in the parking lot, mine the most luxurious among them all.
Eva and I walked alongside each other, stepping into the grand lobby of the hotel.
“This way, ma'am,” An attendant directed. “The party is happening at the back patio of the hotel.”
Soft music filled the air and I walked elegantly behind the attendant. Soon, we were at the back patio he talked about.
And this place was so goddamn big, a swimming pool at the centre of the settings.
I sighted Adrian and before I could take a step, he walked towards me.
My breath hitched. He stopped in front of me and held my hands.
“Happy birthday, wifey,” he said. “Sorry it's coming late.”
I stared blankly at him. A lot was going through my head but among all the thoughts, one stood out.
The fact that I sincerely find Adrian Kane extremely handsome today of all days.
