Chapter 57 Locked Up
Evelyn's POV.
The way we stood so close made my heart race. For the first time since I had been living with Adrian Kane, I felt something I had never felt before.
The way he pulled me closer felt different. Everything about it felt different and I couldn't even bring myself to explain even if I wanted to.
“You care more about your reputation than my safety,” I said, eyes glaring at him. I couldn't tell if it was hatred or something else but I glared.
“They are already behind bars for trying to kill you,” he said. “Guess who it is?”
I blinked. He already took care of them?
From what he has just said, I could tell it wasn't Cassandra. She isn't behind bars yet.
“Dera?” I asked.
“Cecelia,” he said. “She had one of the waitress do it.”
I blinked and staggered away from Adrian's embrace.
There was only one Cecelia I knew and it was sure he was talking about that one.
My shocked face got replaced with a scoff in an instant. The lady was a snake under the green grass.
She made me believe she was a good person who was on my side while making it look like Cassandra was the only bad person.
“Can I visit her?” I asked.
“Why would you?” Adrian frowned his face.
“I need to know why she tried to kill me,” I said. My face was fixed on Adrian as I spoke and he also stared back at me.
For a moment, we both stayed silent and only held each other's eyes.
I broke eye contact first, uncomfortable under his pinned gaze.
“Can I?” I asked.
“David will drive you,” he said. That was a yes.
He was going to walk up the stairs when a call disrupted his walk, making him halt.
The ringing sound of the phone was the only sound that broke through the silence.
Adrian picked it up and unusually, the phone was loud enough for me to hear the voice which came from the other end and also the replies Adrian gave.
A masculine voice rose first, the voice concluded by me to be that of a middle aged man.
“I'm glad you ended up addressing the scandal, Mr. Kane,” the man said. “All the board members waited so hard for you to do that.”
“I did now,” Adrian replied, his voice the same cold and unshaken one. “Everything will be fine now and the stock will rise again.”
“We know,” the man cut him off. “But….. for the public to be clear on whether you love your wife or not, I think you should make a public appearance.”
“There is a concert lunch at MBKs studio tomorrow, I bought you tickets already,” the man said.
“There's no need for that,” Adrian replied sharply. “Get rid of the tickets, I don't want that.”
He ended the call before the man could reply and I couldn't help but wonder at how rude he was. But apart from that, there was another thing which bothered me.
He didn't want to appear publicly and that made me scoff. That had been the only thing they had made me do ever since I came into this home. There was no way he would have gotten tired of it.
He tried to walk up the stairs again but my voice stopped him.
“Why won't you be appearing at the concert the board member talked about?” I asked, standing so tall, shoulders high, confidence overflowing.
He stopped and turned. “Are you questioning me?” His face was creased.
“I can't?” I replied with a question, not feeling bad about it.
His jaws clenched and he said nothing but I wasn't ready to let this go.
“You don't want to do that thing because of me,” I scoffed again. “It's because you don't want to be seen beside me.”
Adrian closed his eyes and sighed. He opened them and stared into my eyes while I stared back into his, his face calm while mine looked into his with anger and hatred.
“Is that what you think?” He asked and I was starting to feel weird and uncomfortable at how totally calm and cool he had been sounding.
“Yes,” I replied sharply. “You are tired of using me as your public appearance figure already?”
Was I feeling bad about that? I honestly couldn't tell.
Was I complaining because I wanted to spend time out with him? I didn't know.
“We'll attend the concert,” he said. “Tomorrow.”
I wasn't surprised he agreed. “Of course, we should. That's all I'm meant to do here after all.”
“What will I be attending as?” I rolled my eyes. “As decoration.”
“As my wife,” Adrian gritted, his words sounding like a correction given in a stern voice.
He walked up the stairs and I only stared at his back until he fully exited.
The rest of the day went by in a blur and the next day, around 11am, I moved out to see Cecelia.
I sat down, waiting for her to be brought out to see me and a few minutes later, she arrived.
She was truly locked up like Adrian had said and the rich wife of an elite member of the business world was wearing a cloth belonging to inmates.
She was in cuffs, made to sit down in the chair in front of me while a glass barrier divided us.
“Look who we have here,” she smiled. “It's Mrs. Evelyn Kane.”
I couldn't return the smile because it was the fakest smile I've ever seen recently.
I wasn't here to play games with her and not to chitchat like we are friends, we never were.
I moved straight to the reason why I had come to see her.
“Why did you do it?” I asked. She turned her face like she didn't understand.
I repeated the question even though I knew she understood what I was saying. “Why did you try to kill me at that masked party of yours?”
