Chapter 50 Finding the Culprit

Chapter 50 Finding the Culprit

Adrian's POV.

At the moment, I couldn't explain the sudden anger that surged through me.

I didn't know if I was angry at myself for not being the one to bring Evelyn here, or if I was angry at Nathaniel for being the one who found her when she collapsed.

I didn't know if the anger was at Evelyn herself for collapsing or if I was angry at Cassandra for drugging me.

That bitch had spiked my drink. I didn't know how she pulled that off but she found me among the numerous masked people and approached me.

The bitch is cunning, I should have expected her to have an ulterior motive when she stayed by my side but I didn't think about that.

She kissed me. I knew Evelyn saw us but at that moment, I couldn't think straight. My eyes were blurred and I could only watch my wife collapse while my ex made sure she wasn't letting go of me.

Evelyn was revived by the female doctor who had a frown on her face.

“She was poisoned,” the doctor turned to face us, her face dark and unforgiving but I didn't care about the look on her face.

She should go to hell if she's getting furious for having to come check up on her again.

“I told him she needs to rest,” she pointed at Nathaniel. “Why then did you have to cause her stress?”

“I would advise you both leave until her health is more stable if you both can't keep quiet,” she said, bowed slightly and then walked out of the room.

The moment she walked out, my mind traced back to the words the doctor had said.

“Poisoned?” I creased my brows. “What does she mean?”

“She ate poisoned bread. A waiter handed it to her at the party,” Nathaniel said.

Evelyn was awake on the bed but she was looking away from me, her head turned to the other side as she stayed silent.

My jaws clenched. Cassandra caused this. If she didn't drug me, then I might have been able to prevent this from happening.

“Leave,” I turned to Nathaniel. “You've done enough here, it's time to leave me alone with my wife.”

My face was darkened and I looked at him, waiting for him to get lost.

He took a deep breath, looked at Evelyn who didn't bother to look his way one more time then walked out of the room.

When he was gone, I faced Evelyn. “I'll be leaving. I have things to take care of.”

She snapped her face to me, swift and dangerous.

“Why then did you ask him to leave if you weren't going to stay?” She stared at me, her face filled with venom.

“You heard the doctor,” My voice grew darker. “She wants you to rest.”

“As if he cares,” she muttered loud enough to hear, then scoffed.

“Where were you all through the night?” She asked calmly.

I didn't give a reply immediately but stared at her for minutes without saying anything.

It wasn't like she cared about what I did. Even if being with Cassandra was real, she doesn't look like she would give a damn fuck about it.

“I was with Cassandra,” I told her. “We spent the night on the second floor of the event venue.”

Cassandra had dragged me up there under the influence of the drugs she had used on me.

I didn't know if I died and resurrected or only just slept for a long while, I woke up this morning to see her gone and that's when it all came back to me that I had watched Evelyn collapse.

Evelyn laughed. “I see.”

I didn't say a word to her and only walked out of the room, heading out of the hospital.

“To the masked party event venue,” I said to David, sliding into the car immediately.

I put a call across to Cecelia, the main host of the masked party.

“Hi, Mr. Adrian,” she said, sounding elated.

She was the one I was made to partner with yesterday. Without being told, I knew having me take the same mask as hers was not a coincidence, it was planned.

She wanted to talk to me but I didn't give her the attention she sought.

“l’ll cut to the chase,” I said. “I'll need to look at the CCTV cameras footage from last night's event. Someone harmed my wife and I need to find out who it is.”

“What?” She sounded shocked. “How's Mrs. Kane? Is she alright?”

I closed my eyes, trying to calm myself down from the frustration that coursed through my veins at the moment.

“Focus!” I snapped.

“There were no security cameras installed at the venue, sir,” she said, her voice suddenly changing nervously. “We wanted to make the party private and comfortable for everyone so we made sure nothing was filmed.”

“Let's meet,” I said, voice sharp and tone cold. “Summon all the waiters at the party too.”

“I'll be at the Denklings show,” I continued. “Let's meet there in less than thirty minutes.”

I didn't wait for her to give a response before I ended the call.

I got to the Denklings show before any of them. I waited in the room where the elite women usually have their gatherings, my fingers tapping on the table as I awaited their arrival.

Soon, Cecelia arrived with the waiters who served the previous night.

I had no time to waste with them and only went straight to the point.

I stood up, hands tucked in my pocket. I looked at all of them, trying to read their faces.

Most of them were nervous, their eyes blinked and their faces were not able to hold mine.

I didn't need to be told, I was so damn sure that among the girls standing, one of them handed a poisoned bread to Evelyn.

“Who poisoned my wife?” I asked, face calm and darkened. “I don't have all day, so speak now.”
