Chapter 22 Lunch for the CEO
Evelyn’s POV.
I stared at the message Cassandra had sent me but I still couldn't bring myself to reply.
It had been two hours since I'd returned to the house after the meeting with the Elite Women, like they called themselves.
I was added to their platform like Cecelia had promised.
For two hours, I stayed on my bed thinking about everything.
My family crisis was messing with my head, and the fact that I tried my best to avoid Adrian throughout the day was also messing me up badly.
I can't possibly avoid him forever when we are staying in the same house.
My jaws clenched as I thought about what Dad did again.
His only hope was Adrian's secrets but that had only gotten us into more trouble.
As I sat on the bed thinking about it, an idea suddenly popped up in my head.
I got out of bed quickly, walking downstairs in a hurry with my phone in my hands.
Mira was just leaving the kitchen. She saw me and looked at me with surprise.
“Is anything the problem, ma'am?” She asked.
I flashed her a smile. “Maybe there’s a little bit of a problem,” I said and she squinted her eyes, curious.
“What does Adrian mostly have for lunch?” I asked.
“Cheese with fried nuts and sometimes he takes chicken,” she replied hesitantly.
My smile grew even wider. “Please make everything quickly and pack it in a lunch pack.”
She stared for a while like she wanted to ask questions but she didn't. She only bowed her head before walking back into the kitchen.
Patiently or rather impatiently, I waited in the sitting room. I sat on the sofa, tapping my feet against the ground and checking the time.
3pm.
I didn't know when he usually gets off work but I hoped he'd still be there.
It didn't take Mira thirty minutes to pack the lunch and when I got it, I moved towards the door.
“What are you going to do ma’am?” she asked, looking confused.
I replied. “As you can see, I'm taking lunch to my husband.”
Outside, I searched everywhere with my eyes for David but was surprised to see that he was nowhere in sight.
“Heading somewhere ma’am?” Someone asked and I glanced back at him.
He was also one of the guards but I didn't recognize him as I could barely recognize everyone.
“What is your name?” I asked. “And where’s David?”
“Edwards,” he replied politely. “David stepped out briefly on the boss’s order. I can take care of your needs while he's away.”
I nodded my head. “Drive me to Adrian's company, I need to deliver his lunch before it's too late”
“I didn't get that order from the boss to bring you to the company,” he argued.
Goddamn! I hated this.
I sucked in a deep breath and faced him again but with no smile on my face.
“Then will you take responsibility if the meal he so badly wants gets cold?” I asked, my face getting dark.
He got lost in his thoughts for a while before he looked at me again. “I’ll get the car ma'am.”
He moved over to where a black BMW was parked and opened the car door for me while I slid in without effort.
The drive to Adrian's office was short but filled with scenery as I looked everywhere outside the window while the car moved.
Soon, the car stopped in front of a tall building which towered over the rest of the buildings beside it.
“What floor?” I picked the lunchpack up and asked Edwards.
“The top floor, ma'am,” he answered. “I'll be waiting here in the car.”
I hummed a response and got out of the car, walking elegantly into the lobby of the company.
I walked over to the checkpoint but was stopped by one of the security guards.
“Your company card?” He asked.
“I don't have one. I don't work here, but I'm here to see Adrian Kane."
“Do you have an appointment?” He asked.
“I don't but I’m….” He didn't let me finish when he spoke.
“Then see the receptionist. You need to get approval before you can walk through here.”
Too much hassle!
Directly ahead sat a long, curved reception desk made of glass and polished wood, positioned beneath a tall wall bearing the company’s name in silver letters.
Behind the desk sat a find young lady in a black blazer, her chair tucked neatly in, a computer screen glowing in front of her.
“Hi,” I greeted, making her look at me.
The receptionists I have always seen in companies usually has a smile on their faces but this lady didn't.
“Hello. What can I do for you?” She asked before returning her gaze back to her desk.
“I'm here to see Adrian,” I said.
She glanced at me, her eyes lingering on me for a while before she spoke.
“Adrian?” She twitched her face.
“Yes. The CEO,” I replied.
She smirked too loudly. “You've got some nerves. Who are you?”
I thought everyone was a fan of his? I thought everyone should recognize me because of the banquet camera paparazzi and the interview we had together?
“His wife,” I replied simply.
She looked at me like I was crazy. Then I turned my gaze to look at myself.
I was wearing an old fashioned crop dress I had bought as thrift with my friends back in college and a pair of baggy pants which also looked pretty old.
Right. Adrian Kane was a filthy rich man and his wife shouldn't be going around in these.
“You should leave. Come back when you have an appointment,” she said.
I sighed annoyingly. “Call him, tell him Evelyn is here.”
She did as I said and phoned Adrian's office.
When he picked up, she said, “There's a woman looking for you here, boss.”
“She's calling herself your wife and I think she's crazy, should I have the security throw her out?”
My lips parted in disbelief as I watched her.
Her next words.
“Evelyn.”
The call went dead.
The receptionist didn’t say a word. She only placed the phone back on the desk and looked at me like I was already dismissed.
Then I heard footsteps behind me.
I froze when I saw them approaching.
Men in Black.
