Chapter 19 Married to an Asshole
Evelyn's POV.
Who was it? What message were they trying to pass to me?
I didn't know what to make of the message but I couldn't bring myself to reply.
Thinking about Adrian Kane and the necklace made my headache, thinking about the situation of my family made my heart ache.
Everything felt heavy, I couldn’t hold back anymore. Tears rolled down my cheeks.
I buried my face into my pillow. How did it all go south?
Should I blame my Dad, or myself? Everything started when I talked back at Adrian Kane in the mall.
I drifted to sleep with my eyes still buried in my pillow.
The next morning, a knock on the door jolted me awake. I draggede myselff out of bed and opened the doors with heavy eyes.
It was Mira. She was surprised to see me still in the dress from the dinner.
I walked back into the room, and sat back on my bed.
“What's the problem this early in the morning?” I asked.
“It's not early, ma'am,” she responded. “It's almost 11am.”
My eyes widened. I grabbed my phone from the nightstand to confirm.
“Shit! The interview!” I exclaimed.
I was supposed to have an interview with the Elite Women Community today.
“Yes, I'm glad you remember,” she said. “I'm here to help you prepare,”
“It starts by 12, we still have time,” she added.
I jumped out of bed. “Pick me a dress, I'll go take my bath.”
I had a quick bath and returned almost immediately. Got dressed and stood in front of the mirror.
Mira picked a green silk gown and a black Hermes bag with a black heel.
I checked myself out and when my eyes got to my neck, I was forced to remember that darn necklace.
I moved over to my accessories box and picked one of the golden necklaces I had gotten from the boutique and placed it on my neck.
“I look good,” I muttered to myself, I added the final touch to my makeup and headed outside.
Mira followed outside the house and when we got to the parking lot, David was already waiting.
He bowed respectfully. “I would be taking you to the venue of your interview ma’am,”
I nodded and got into the car.
David drove out of the mansion into the main road, heading to the venue of the interview.
I was on my phone the entire drive to the venue, until David called my attention. “We are here, ma'am,” David said.
I looked up and saw that we were already in front of a big building that looked like an organization.
“I'll take you inside,” he said. “This way”
He led the way into the organization, into the elevator and to the third floor of the building.
“We are here, ma'am,” he said.
I smiled at him. “Thank you”
“I'll wait here,” he said. “Just in case you need me.”
I nodded and pushed the door open, walking inside.
Women were seated around a long table, their laughter light and practiced. Most of them looked older than me, composed, confident, the kind of women who knew exactly where they belonged.
Their laughter slowly vanished when they looked at me and the room suddenly became silent.
Turns out, I was sixteen minutes late and every chair had already been filled up except mine.
My eyes scanned the room, until they landed on the one person I least expected to be here.
Cassandra.
Adrian's ex.
She looked at me with her head slightly tilted to the side, a sly smirk on her face as she wiggled her fingers. She sat like she owned the place.
A woman who was sitting at the head of the table stood up and moved over to me with a smile.
“Welcome, Mrs. Kane.” She greeted. “I almost thought you won't be joining us today.”
She let her hand rest on my lower back and guided me to the only available seat in the room, which was right beside Cassandra.
I couldn't help but think they did that intentionally because they want drama between the ex and the wife. These cliche moves were very common in movies and books. But I won’t be giving them what they want. Not today.
“Hello everyone,” I greeted before I took my seat. “I'm Evelyn Kane.”
Right. I married an asshole and took on his last name.
Cassandra chuckled at the words. “Kane sounds great on you.” The others laughed.
That possibly sounded like a compliment to them but I was clearly being mocked.
“We actually organized this meeting because of you,” she said.
So it wasn’t an interview, but a meeting, there were no cameras around.
“I'm honoured,” I forced a smile.
They introduced themselves one after the other and I kept smiling as a response.
“I'm Cassandra Vale,” Cassandra who sat beside me was the last to do the introduction, everyone applauded.
“The one he dumped for you,” she leaned in closer and whispered that.
Cecelia, the woman who looked like the leader, spoke again.
“Actually… ’’ she started. “We invited you here because we are curious about your relationship with the handsome Mr. Kane.”
“I hope you won't mind us asking you some questions?” She added.
I tried as best as I could not to feel irritated at the mention of Adrian and forced a smile to my lips. “Of course.”
They giggled and talked among themselves while Cassandra looked like the only one who was composed among them.
“Let’s start from the beginning. How did you two meet?” A lady asked. “Everyone really wants to know why he left Cassandra just to be with you!”
I rolled my eyes quickly in a second and was glad they barely noticed. I turned to Cassandra who also glanced at me in return. She awaited a response while tapping her fingers on the table.
“Yes, how did you guys meet?” Another person asked.
And that was the problem.
I don't have the answer.
