Chapter 18 018
Evelyn's POV.
I couldn't take my eyes off the mirror. I pushed Adrian off me with every ounce of strength I had.
I took quick steps towards the mirror before he could make sense of what was going on. When I stood in front of the mirror, my suspicions were confirmed.
There was a red light blinking from inside the necklace. I was being recorded. There was no other logical explanation.
I yanked the necklace off my neck and smashed it to the floor.
The sound of shattering glass echoed, and the diamond broke into pieces. A tiny device hidden inside came into sight.
My stomach dropped.
I turned to Adrian and scoffed. Adrian stood beside me, his hands in his pocket, and his face unreadable, like nothing had gone wrong.
He looked into my eyes with no remorse.
It all made sense. The sudden call at the mall, just when I intended to drain his credit card. His initial plain reaction at the interview, and his sudden entrance just now.
He listened to every discussion I had through this damn device in the necklace he gifted me.
“You want to explain this?” I broke the silence that stretched between us.
He removed one hand from his pocket, and closed the remaining distance between us. My body heated up but I hated his entire demeanor right now.
“You want to explain the reason why you are in my room first?” he reiterated.
I scoffed. “You probably know that already since you've been listening to all my conversations so far.”
He smirked. “So… what secrets were you hoping you'd find?”
He knew it all.
Damn! I never questioned his instruction to not take it off. That was the worst part.
“Are you even human?” I asked, my face still twisted. “You really added a recorder in a necklace and gave it to me?”
“I did,” he said. “You were spying on me. My instincts were not wrong.”
His gaze darkened. “You were hoping you'd find dirt on me?”
“You never will,” he smirked. “And even if you do, you'll go down before you are able to bring me down with it.”
I folded my fists, grabbing a handful of my clothes as my jaws clenched.
“You’re a bastard!” I spat.
He held both of my shoulders firmly, and before I could process it, my body was slammed into the wall, and I let out a loud gasp.
“You have been digging into me with your father,” he spat the words with so much venom.
I held his gaze, gritting my teeth. “Because we are trying to survive!”
There was no use denying it.
His lips twitched into a smirk again. “You and your father, can stop now,” His voice was calm but the darkness in his tone didn't go unnoticed.
“You'll only get yourselves into bigger trouble if you don't,” he said.
I held his gaze. “What will happen if we don't?” Maybe I was trying to dare him or just wanted to know, I couldn't say.
“You want to see me fall,” he paused. “But before I do, I'll make sure your entire family falls and see to it that your generations will never get to rise again.”
The way he said the words so calmly and comfortably made shivers run through my spine.
I swallowed hard but I couldn't bring myself to say anything.
“I'll pretend nothing happened. But the next time it happens again, your entire family will have to beg for death but death would be very far. There’s no easy way out.”
He walked out of the room while I arched into the wall trying to get over my shock.
My eyes were fixed on the broken necklace on the floor and I couldn't help but breath as fast as the red device blinking on the ground.
I had gotten myself into something I wouldn't be able to handle and at the moment, I was sure this marriage with Adrian Kane was going to be the end of me.
I let out a heavy sigh and returned to the dinner where Adrian was already seated, continuing his meal.
Before I took my seat, my eyes met with Dad. With his hands, he gestured to find out if i had gotten anything.
I shook my head sideways and pressed my lips into a thin line before I settled down on the chair.
Adrian lifted his gaze and I could see with the corner of my eyes that he was looking at me.
“You took eternity in the restroom, babe,” he said and I forced myself to chuckle.
“I know, right? Bad tummy upset.”
The dinner ended with Dad and Adrian talking but Dad kept laughing to his jokes alone.
At the moment, all I could think about was how pathetic we looked.
Our entire family having dinner with such a powerful man should be an honour but I couldn't get it out of my head that we were just being pathetic.
The maids cleared the table. For a while, we only took sips of the red wine before deciding to call it a night.
“We'll leave now,” Dad announced. “We don't need to check her room. She’s doing really well. We don’t expect less from a man of honour.”Dad chuckled.
Adrian didn't try to stop them, he only nodded.
“I’ll try to drop by often,” Eva said with a small smile, hugging me.
I didn't say a word and only patted her back, and watched them leave.
When they were fully out of sight, I turned back to Adrian.
He was also staring back at me. “I hate how your neck is bare,” he said.
“Fuck you!” I spat back at him and left the patio immediately.
While I walked, I heard my phone beep. A message from an unknown number popped up on my screen, and I clicked without hesitation.
“You don't know Adrian Kane! He is not who you think he is! I'm sure you'd like to know more.” The message read.
