Chapter 2 The gilded cage
The morning of the interview felt like a fever dream. I spent an hour in front of our small, warped bathroom mirror, trying to tame my hair into something that screamed "professional" rather than "bakery girl." My stomach was a knot of cold lead. Every time I looked at my hands, I saw the ghost of flour under my fingernails, a reminder of the world I was leaving behind—a world that was safe, small, and simple.
"You look beautiful, Elena," Maya whispered, leaning against the doorframe. She handed me a cup of tea, her eyes soft. "Just breathe. You’ve got the 'Elena Charm.' No one can say no to that."
"Mrs. Blackwood might," I muttered, taking a shaky sip.
The bus ride to the "Hill," as everyone called the wealthy district, felt like crossing a border into a different country. The houses grew larger, the lawns greener, and the air seemed to grow still and heavy with the scent of mown grass and old money. When the driver called out my stop, I felt like a soldier being dropped behind enemy lines.
I stood before the Blackwood estate, and my breath hitched. I hadn't expected a house; I had expected a fortress. The walls were made of dark, imposing stone, rising ten feet high and topped with wrought-iron spikes that looked like teeth. I couldn't see a single blade of grass on the other side.
I reached for the intercom, my finger hovering over the button. You’re doing this for Leo. You’re doing this for Dad. I pressed it.
The chime echoed through the quiet street, and within seconds, the massive iron gates groaned open. A man in a crisp black suit, looking more like a statue than a human, stood there. He didn’t smile. He didn’t greet me. He simply gestured for me to follow.
As we walked up the long, winding driveway, the mansion revealed itself. It was a gothic masterpiece of gray stone and towering windows that looked like unblinking eyes. The architecture was sharp and cold, a stark contrast to the cozy, mismatched furniture of my home. Inside, the foyer was a cavern of white marble and echoing silence. The air didn't smell like vanilla here; it smelled of lemon polish and something expensive—like a museum where you weren't allowed to touch anything.
I was barely inside for a minute before a woman appeared. Mrs. Blackwood. She was impeccably dressed in a cream-colored silk suit, her hair pulled back so tightly I wondered if it hurt. She didn't look at me so much as she looked through me.
"Elena, I presume?" she said, her voice like a cold snap of wind. "Follow me. I don't like to waste time."
She led me into a mahogany-paneled office that felt like it was designed to make people feel small. She sat behind a desk the size of a small car and gestured for me to sit.
"So," she began, leaning back and crossing her legs. Her expression was entirely nonchalant, as if my presence was a minor chore on her to-do list. "Tell me why I should hire you. What makes you different from the dozens of candidates with actual medical backgrounds I’ve interviewed this week?"
My throat went bone-dry. My heart began a frantic rhythm against my ribs. "Well... I... I'm very good at timing," I blurted out.
Mrs. Blackwood’s eyebrow arched. "Timing?"
"Yes! Like... with bread. You see, at the bakery, if the sourdough sits too long, it sours, but if you pull it too early, the crust is soft. I have a very keen sense of when something—or someone—needs a bit more heat or a bit more space. I... I'm also very used to early mornings! I can bake a mean cinnamon roll if Mr. Victor gets hungry at 4:00 AM. And I’m very patient with the kneading process. Sometimes things just need to be worked through until they’re pliable, you know?"
I stopped, my face turning a shade of red that surely matched the mahogany walls. Kneading? Sourdough?
I looked down at my lap, prepared for her to call security. But silence stretched between us. When I looked up, Mrs. Blackwood wasn't laughing. She was studying me with a strange, calculating intensity.
"Patience," she whispered, more to herself than to me. "Most of the nurses tried to 'fix' him with clinical efficiency. They treated him like a broken machine. You... you speak about things like they have a soul. Victor is a dark, sour dough right now, Elena. He’s bitter. He’s angry. And he has driven away every professional I’ve hired."
She stood up suddenly. "Come. Let's see if your 'bubbly' nature can survive my son."
We descended into the lower level of the house. It wasn't a "basement" in the way our basement was—a dark place for spiders and old boxes. This was a glass-walled sanctuary that opened out onto a private courtyard. It was modern, sleek, and felt like a high-end cage.
In the center of the room, a man was struggling between two parallel bars. A physical therapist stood nearby, but my eyes were locked on the man in the center.
Victor Blackwood was, quite simply, the most handsome and tragic thing I had ever seen. Even with the sweat drenching his shirt and the grimace of pure agony on his face, he was breathtaking. He had hair the color of midnight and a jawline that could have been carved from the stone of the house itself. But his eyes—even from a distance—were twin pools of liquid shadow.
"Victor" Mrs. Blackwood called out.
The movement stopped. Victor slumped slightly, his knuckles white as he gripped the bars. He slowly turned his head. The look he gave us wasn't one of greeting; it was one of pure, unadulterated venom.
"Another one, Mother?" his voice was a low, dangerous growl. "What is this one? A specialist in 'hope'? A cheerleader in a cardigan?"
"This is Elena," his mother said, ignoring his tone. "She’ll be your primary assistant starting Monday."
Victor's gaze swung to me. For a second, the air left my lungs. It was like being stared at by a wounded predator. He looked me up and down, his lip curling in a sneer.
"She looks like she belongs in a field of daisies, not in this tomb," Victor snapped. He looked at his legs—strong, muscular legs that simply wouldn't do what he told them to—and the frustration in him was so thick it felt like heat. "I don't need a babysitter to watch me fail. Get her out of here."
I wanted to say something bubbly. I wanted to tell him that I wasn't afraid of a little hard work or a bad mood. But the words died in my throat. This wasn't a customer complaining about a burnt muffin. This was a man who had been the "Golden Boy" of the city—the athlete, the heir, the heartthrob—and now he felt like a ghost haunting his own body.
He hated the way I looked at him. He hated that I was standing while he was leaning. He hated that his mother kept bringing people in to witness his weakness.
"Monday, 8:00 AM, Elena," Mrs. Blackwood said, turning on her heel and leading me back toward the stairs.
I looked back one last time. Victor had turned away, his head bowed, his shoulders shaking with the effort of just standing still. He was a man who hated life because life had betrayed him.
I walked out of that mansion and back to the bus stop, my hands still shaking. I was supposed to be his light, but as I looked back at the high stone walls, I realized I was just another person who was going to watch him drown in the dark. I didn't know then that the "fire" I felt when our eyes met wasn't just fear. It was the beginning of a connection that would burn everything we knew to the ground.
