Chapter 1 The cracks on the glass
The smell of vanilla and toasted yeast has always been my version of a lullaby. For two years, it was the scent that clung to my hair, settled into the fibers of my clothes, and defined the boundaries of my world. I loved it. I loved the way the morning light hit the flour-dusted counters of The Golden Crust, and I loved the way the bell above the door chimed, announcing another neighbor seeking a warm loaf and a smile.
"Morning, Elena!" Mrs. Gable chirped, her floral shawl trailing behind her.
"Morning, Mrs. Gable! Extra glaze on the cinnamon roll today?" I replied, already reaching for the tongs. I was bubbly by nature—some called it naive, but I called it gratitude. I had a roof over my head, a family that loved me, and a nephew, Leo, who thought I was the strongest person in the world because I could carry him on my shoulders.
But that morning, the air in the back office felt different. It was heavy, devoid of the usual sweetness. My boss, Mr. Henderson, looked like he hadn't slept in a week.
"Elena," he said, his voice a low gravel. "I’m sure you’re wondering why I called you in."
"A promotion?" I joked, though my stomach did a nervous flip.
He didn't laugh. He handed me a brown envelope, the edges slightly frayed. "I’m closing the shop by Monday. The debts... they’ve finally caught up. You’ve been the heart of this place, Elena. I truly hope you find something better than this old flour bin."
The "thank you" I whispered felt hollow. I walked home through the familiar streets, the envelope tucked under my arm like a lead weight. My family wasn't rich. We lived in a house where the floorboards groaned in protest and the heater gave up every other winter, but we were happy. My father, his hands once calloused from years of labor, now sat at the table with a newspaper, his eyes tired but kind. My sister, Maya, worked herself to the bone for "peanuts," and yet she always found a way to buy Leo a new toy once a month.
When I broke the news, the room went quiet, save for the sound of Leo’s toy truck zooming across the linoleum.
"I lost the job," I said, my voice cracking. "The shop is closing."
My mother paused, a wooden spoon mid-air, dripping tomato sauce onto the stove. She wiped her hands on her apron and came over, her touch warm against my shoulder. "Oh, sweetheart, don't be hard on yourself. You’ll get something."
"But the rent, Mom. And Dad’s medicine," I argued.
My father looked up from his paper, his voice steady. "Even if that is the case, Elena, something will come up. A door closes, a window opens. Don’t let the light go out of your eyes over a bakery."
That night, lying in bed, the silence of the house felt suffocating. I pulled out my phone, the screen illuminating the dark room, and messaged Liam.
Elena: The bakery is gone. Henderson is closing the doors on Monday. I’m terrified, Liam. What if I can’t find anything else?
His reply came almost instantly.
Liam: Hey, beautiful. Breathe. You are the hardest worker I know. You aren't going to stay unemployed for long.
Elena: Easy for you to say. Everywhere is hiring 'experienced' people, and all I know is sourdough and croissants.
Liam: Listen to me. Tomorrow morning, go straight to the Job Centre. Don’t wait. Check the open vacancies. There’s a world outside of that kitchen, Elena. Maybe it’s time you saw it.
Elena: I hope you’re right.
Liam: I’m always right. Now get some sleep. You have a big day tomorrow.
The Job Centre was a gray, sterile building that smelled of old paper and desperation. I sat across from a woman named Martha who scrolled through a list of openings with a clinical boredom.
"Nothing in food service," she muttered. "Retail is full. We have a warehouse position—"
"I’m not sure I’m built for lifting crates," I said, looking at my flour-softened hands.
"Wait," Martha paused, her glasses sliding down her nose. "Here’s one. Private residence. It’s a caretaking role. Not medical, more... physical assistance and companionship. The pay is... well, it’s triple what you made at the bakery."
"Triple?" I leaned in.
"The family is the Blackwoods. Very wealthy. Very private. The son, Victor, was in a catastrophic car accident a few months ago. He’s struggling with mobility. He needs someone to help him navigate the house, assist with basic needs, and basically keep him from falling into a dark hole."
My heart hammered. The Blackwoods were royalty in this city. I’d seen their name on museum wings and hospital gala invites.
"I've never done caretaking," I whispered.
"They aren't looking for a nurse; they have those. They want someone 'personable and patient.' That sounds like your bakery reviews, doesn't it?"
I signed the paper before I could talk myself out of it.
When I got home, the house was a whirlwind. My mother and Maya acted like I was preparing for a royal ball rather than a job interview.
"Use the blue blouse, Elena," Maya said, tossing a pile of clothes onto my bed. "It makes you look professional but approachable."
"I don't even know if I can do this, Maya," I said, my heart racing. "A wealthy estate? A man who can't walk? What if I say the wrong thing?"
My mother walked in, holding a pair of polished shoes. "You won't. You’ll be yourself. You’ve spent two years making people feel better with a cupcake; now you’ll do it with your kindness. This Victor... he’s just a person, Elena. A person who is hurting."
"He’s a Blackwood, Mom," I reminded her. "They live in a fortress on the hill."
"And even in a fortress, people get lonely," she replied softly. "Just remember why you're doing this. For Leo, for us. But mostly, for your own future."
Maya hugged me from behind, her chin resting on my shoulder. "Think of it this way—if he’s a jerk, at least the house is pretty. And if he’s nice... well, maybe this is the 'something else' Dad was talking about."
I looked at my reflection in the cracked mirror. I didn't see the bakery girl anymore. I saw someone standing on the edge of a cliff, about to jump into a life I couldn't even imagine. I didn't know then that the man waiting for me in that mansion was more than a job. He was the piece of me I never knew was missing—and the one truth that would eventually tear my world apart.
"Okay," I whispered to my reflection. "Let's go meet Victor Blackwood."
