Chapter 35 Thirty-Five

Chapter 35 Thirty-Five

Kimberly

The call was counting but he wasn’t saying anything

“Are you there?” I asked.

Why wasn’t he saying anything?

“Uh… yeah, yeah,” he finally said.

“What do you want?” I asked my tone  a bit sharp.

“I’m just calling to check up on you?”

Check up on me? Since when did he start doing that?

My forehead wrinkled and I brought the phone down, squinting and looking inward at it.

I took it back to my ear.setting my legs apart with a raised chin.

“What do you want?”

“Are you home?”

“Yes and?”My eyes narrowed and my tone was uncertain.

Why is he asking?

“Are you free to come downstairs?”he asked, his voice softer than usual.

“Uh… You have a girlfriend,” I blurted out.

I sighed, I shouldn’t have said it out like that, what if he needed me for another thing and I was just overthinking it.

“I know, but can I just see you for a moment,” he said simply.

“ You know, you shouldn’t be close to me right now, your girlfriend wouldn’t want girls around you.”

“But she isn’t here Kimberly.”

“Who knows, she might just show up and when she sees us close she will probably overthink it and that will cause trouble for me,” I shrugged.

“Nahh… that’s not possible, it can’t happen,” he said simply.

Then there goes a silence from his end.

“Hello,” I said, more like confirming if he was still there.

He cleared his throat “Uhm… Can we meet in the house… like I mean at the library downstairs.”

I pursed my lips in thought, my face tightened . What does he even want to talk about that seems so important.

Going there means too much closeness between us. Was it really a good idea?

“Okay,” I find myself saying.

Then I ended the call. Dropping the phone face down on my bed.

My hand flew to my chest and exhaled deeply, I didn’t know I was holding that breath.

I sat down on my bed. I glanced at my closet. I should be dressing up to go meet him.

I looked down on myself, my eyes sweeping over my body. The clothes I was wearing were really not that bad. I have worn it several times in this house and Xavier must have probably seen it on me.

But right now I feel overly conscious of what to wear. I stood up and walked closer to my closet. I took out a pile of clothes from inside, my eyes narrowing looking for what to wear.

My shoulders slumped.

“I need to get new clothes,” I muttered to myself.

I finally settled for a short wine skirt and a cream colored top.

I look at myself in the mirror.

“This skirt feels too short, Kimberly what’s your mission?” I questioned myself.

“You’re just going there to see him and talk and not something else,” I said to myself and then I took the skirt off and settled for a Grey jogger.

As I walked downstairs, I kept wondering what he wanted to talk about. Is he going to apologise for embarrassing me or was he angry?

“It better be that he wants to apologize,” I murmured.

I stopped right on my track.

My mind spiraled back. I looked at my hand, that spot where he had grabbed, heat flushed through my cheeks.

“Kimberly, he has a girlfriend!” I said to myself, trying to keep my expression as straight as possible.

My phone buzzed, I raised it up to look at the screen. It was him again.

“Can’t he just wait for a few minutes, it hasn’t been long when he even asked me to come,” I sneered.

My mind reminded me, Kimberly, you used over thirty minutes to get ready.

I twisted my lips, scratching my head.

A notification popped on my screen, it was a text from him.

Xavier: I’m there already.

I sneered,“Then wait.”

I continued walking downstairs, still staring at some messages on my phone.

I stopped right on the last stair and I looked up slowly away from my phone and my eyes met who I wasn’t even expecting to be in the house today.

Mrs Grey. She was supposed to be in a meeting.

My heart raced. I greeted, bowing my head.

She didn’t reply, her gaze was hard.

She  gestured with her fingers for me to leave the way.

I quickly shifted away from there, pressing my body on the rail.

Dead end

At least she has saved me from meeting Xavier, calming down my anxiety a bit.

I arrived at school, trying to walk away quickly from the hallway. Since no one has noticed me yet. They were deeply engrossed on God knows what on their phones.

I haven’t even taken ten steps when fingers started pointing towards me.

I sighed. What was I even expecting? I knew the drama yesterday was going to cause a lot.

I walked past a group of girls

“This scholarship girl has been doing the most lately,” someone said.

“Really? What did she do?” Another girl asked

“Oh Shannel, you missed a lot yesterday, she caused a fight between Xavier and Andre.”

The other girl gasped. “The rivals.”

“Oh yeah.”

“She just came back from a suspension right? I guess she wants to be notice so bad.”

I hastened my footsteps and used my hands to cover my ears. I didn’t want to hear anymore of that. I just hope it hasn’t gotten to their blog yet.

I hadn't finished walking the hallway , when Andre appeared and took my hand in his, holding it gently .

“You good?,” he asked, looking down at my face.

“Yeah.”

“Are you okay now, hope that pig-head didn’t bother you?”

“Andre…” I called softly.

“What?” He looked down at me, acting a bit surprised like he didn’t know what he just did

“You shouldn’t talk to him like that.”

“He deserves it,” he said and I didn’t bother to protest so as not to prolong the issue.

Out of nowhere, Xavier walked towards us.

“Oh, not again,” I whispered to myself. I hope they don’t cause more trouble today.

Andre’s posture stiffened, “Are you going to cause another fight today?”

Xavier looked away, he didn’t say anything.

“Since you have been on suspension on the Championship trial it seems you’ve  got more time on your hands.”

Xavier brows furrowed,he tightened his fist by his side. It seemed he was trying to ignore Andre as best as he could.

His gaze shifted to me.

“Kimberly, Can I talk to you for a moment?”

I looked at Andre.

“Can you please excuse us?”

I didn’t wait for his approval before I walked away.

I stopped and then turned to face Xavier.

“Can we please walk apart?, like give a distance,” I said politely

We  got to a corner  away from Andre. The air felt tense, we were both silent for a while.

“What do you want to talk about?” I asked, finally breaking the silence.

He blinked rapidly, refusing to look at  me in the eyes.

“I think I need to stop pretending,” he said quietly. Then he stopped.

I leaned forward, folding my arms across my chest.

“Pretending about what?”
