Chapter 734: Voluntary Donation
Neither of them had figured out how to start the conversation when the doors of the operating room swung open.
Rosalind was the first to leap to her feet and rush forward.
"Benjamin!"
She cried out his name, her voice sharp and mournful.
It was clear that she still trusted her instincts, convinced that Benjamin was inside.
Andrew frowned and followed, grabbing Rosalind's arm to steady her.
The doors opened wide as a doctor and nurses stepped aside, making way for a patient being wheeled out.
The gathered crowd surged forward, surrounding the gurney in a chaotic cluster.
Andrew caught a glance at the patient's face and immediately felt relief wash over him.
"Mom, it's not Benjamin," he said, holding Rosalind's arm tightly to steady her, though he was also comforting himself.
The patient on the gurney was still under anesthesia, but it was clear it wasn't Benjamin.
The concerned expressions on the faces of the accompanying family members made it obvious that this was their loved one.
Rosalind let out a shaky breath as her body slumped against Andrew.
"Not Benjamin… not Benjamin," she murmured, her voice trembling.
Her fear had nearly consumed her.
Andrew helped her to the side, guiding her to lean against the wall. He watched as the group of family members trailed after the gurney, disappearing down the hallway.
"Mom, take a moment to calm down. Let's wait for news from Alex," Andrew said, his voice filled with worry as he observed Rosalind's fragile state.
Though they were relieved that Benjamin wasn't inside, the fact remained-they still hadn't found him.
Rosalind nodded weakly. "Alright."
Perhaps she truly intended to steady herself, to regain her composure. She lowered her head and leaned against the wall, focusing on her breathing.
She knew she couldn't afford to collapse before finding Benjamin.
Andrew felt slightly reassured seeing her listen to his advice. He leaned against the wall beside her, allowing his own tense nerves to relax for a moment.
But just as they began to unwind, another gurney was pushed out of the operating room.
This time, it was different. There were no doctors accompanying it, and only a single nurse was pushing the cart. The scene felt strangely desolate.
Andrew's gaze swept over it casually-until his eyes landed on the patient. His pupils constricted sharply.
"Ben... Benjamin!"
Hearing his exclamation, Rosalind's body stiffened. She raised her head and followed Andrew's gaze.
The moment she saw clearly, she dashed forward with a burst of energy.
"Benjamin!!"
She flung herself toward the gurney, her bloodshot eyes fixated on the figure lying atop it.
The pale, unconscious face of the patient was unmistakable-it was Benjamin.
Like the patient before him, Benjamin was still asleep, unresponsive under the effects of anesthesia.
But his ashen complexion made him look even more lifeless.
"Benjamin! Benjamin?!"
Rosalind called his name repeatedly, her voice shaking, but there was no response.
She turned her attention to the nurse pushing the gurney, grabbing her by the arm in desperation.
"What did you do to my Benjamin?! What happened to him?!"
The nurse, unprepared for such an outburst, was visibly frightened. She let go of the gurney entirely.
"Are you the donor's family? He's a voluntary donor," the nurse stammered, trying to dodge Rosalind's grip.
She didn't know much about the situation but tried to explain the essentials.
Unintentionally, her words only provoked Rosalind further.
"Impossible! Benjamin is not in good health-how could he willingly donate anything?!"
Rosalind was like a lioness whose cub had been threatened. Her anger was uncontrollable.
Andrew, on the other hand, was focused on checking Benjamin's condition. When he saw how fragile Benjamin seemed, his heart sank.
"Mom, calm down. Let's get Benjamin out of here first," Andrew urged.
Hearing that Benjamin wasn't in good shape, Rosalind's panic intensified.
Letting go of the nurse, she returned to Benjamin's side, her hands trembling as she touched his face, her heart aching at the sight of his frailty.
Taking advantage of the distraction, the nurse quickly slipped away.
Andrew noticed but didn't stop her-there were more pressing matters at hand.
Now that they had found Benjamin, they needed to notify Alex immediately.
Pulling out his phone, Andrew glanced at Rosalind, who was anxiously fussing over Benjamin, and felt his nerves tighten again.
"Mom, don't touch him too much; be careful," he warned as he dialed Alex's number.
The call connected quickly, and Andrew got straight to the point, telling Alex to come over.
Within minutes, Alex arrived, breathless and sweating.
"Is Benjamin really here?"
He barely finished his sentence before his eyes landed on Benjamin lying on the gurney.
Benjamin's face was as white as a sheet, lifeless like a corpse.
Alex's chest tightened painfully.
He hadn't expected Rosalind's instincts to be correct.
Benjamin had indeed been in that operating room.
If… if they hadn't stopped Rosalind earlier…
Alex wasn't alone in that thought. Andrew was grappling with it as well.
But no one felt it more acutely than Rosalind.
"This is all your fault! If you hadn't stopped me, Benjamin wouldn't have ended up like this!"
The thought that they had waited outside foolishly, effectively allowing Benjamin to be taken and harmed, filled her with overwhelming guilt and rage.
If anything happened to Benjamin, she would never forgive them.
Alex's expression darkened at her words, guilt weighing heavily on him.
Andrew tried to reason with her. "Mom, even if Alex and I hadn't stopped you, those people wouldn't have let you in."
He admitted their mistake, but there was no guarantee that barging in would have prevented the surgery.
It could have made things worse, jeopardizing Benjamin's life further.
At least now, Benjamin was still alive, albeit weak.
But Rosalind refused to listen, her anger undiminished.
For now, though, her priority was Benjamin. "Let's focus on getting Benjamin to wake up. We'll deal with those people later."
The three of them turned their full attention to Benjamin.
"I'll call for an ambulance and get Benjamin transferred immediately," Andrew decided.
There was no way they could leave Benjamin in this private clinic.
Alex and Rosalind nodded in agreement.
Once the emergency call was placed, Andrew glanced at Benjamin and said, "Alex, we need to call the police."
From what the nurse and the other family members had said, it was clear that Benjamin had been coerced into "voluntarily" donating.
Even if their prior suspicions about Thea weren't entirely accurate, Benjamin was still a victim.
Thea, the mastermind, was still out there.
But the other family members involved in this were within reach.
If the police got involved, they could seek justice for Benjamin and ensure those responsible faced consequences.
Alex's expression hardened. "I'll call them right now."
